    Another good one Kevin! Thank you for sharing! Don’t be afraid to get into the gruesome detail on these. We’re out here eating this up! Sk in the UK.

      Hi Stephan. I always feel bad since our vids are rarely a decent "how to". It's more like what we're dealing with day-to-day. But I'll try for a better work product in the future. Thanks so much for watching.

    Great video again Kevin.
    However butyl tape (same as raydon barrier tape) we used on our waterproof enclosures for our wireless network at work on top of mountains etc. It’s waterproof and seals....but you will never open it again!!
    You mentioned not using silicone as you wanted access.....silicone will open easy does not stick well at all (unlike Sikoflex). However butyl tape sticks like glue. The boxes we sealed with butyl tape we actually broke the plastic trying to force the door open with a screwdriver after using butyl tape to seal them. Great stuff for boat windows......bun you will never get them out again!

      Hi Jay. I've had excellent luck with butyl tape. People have told me though that there are differences in quality and to make sure about who you're buying from. Based on that advice we purchased our large roll many years ago from Sailrite, and of course paid a bit more than what it would have cost from the Chinese vendors on eBay. I think I'd hesitate to use silicone for the application here as it rarely survives long in a marine environment. And Sikaflex is just too good at the job, as you note. I'm confident that if I have to remove the console, which I will come spring as the companionway hatch needs new tracks and plastic runners, I'll just cut the butyl with a razor blade, leaving the two sides in place. Then when I reinstall I'll either simply reattach or clean and reapply. If I have problems I'll be sure to update the site accordingly so that you'll know.

      @@SailingTalisman Great, let me know how it goes if you open up the panel again. Just like I mentioned we used good quality builders type and after around 6 months went to open a box to upgrade a router and could not get the do or off at all.
      We could not get a blade in as a lip around the door. Great stuff for sealing but in past usages it stuck fast, far firmer than Sikoflex even. Be interesting to see your results.
      Happy sailing. 😃

    Good installation Kevin, and you know your system if you need to work on it. I really enjoy your DYI videos but a Hi from Wendy would have been nice addition.

      Thanks so much Orville. We get a lot of requests for Wendy and I'm working at getting her to be less shy about the camera.

    Good job and well explained. I bet you inner OCD was chomping to go for new lexan panel and to rip out every last vestige of old wiring in the boat.😂

      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you saw the amount of wiring in this boat, you'd be amazed. I hear people talking about "rewiring" a boat for 220 vs 110 and I just laugh. You'd literally have to strip it all down to the hull and start from scratch, which would be a monumental task. Anyway, we fix and improve what we can, but Oyster did a very nice job to start.

    Very clean install! Why did you go with Raymarine instead of B&G Triton 2 displays with sailing specific software?

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Morgan. The boat had Raymarine instruments when we bought her, so I wanted the system to integrate with the older instruments, and although NMEA 2000 networks can theoretically allow use of varying brands, in practice this leads to a greater likelihood of buggy interfaces. Also, B&G has gained a regrettable reputation for "phasing out" relatively new systems, leaving owners with no way to upgrade their systems, even after 4-5 years. Anyway, they're good products and I like what I've seen on other boats. Raymarine is pretty committed to having all the bells and whistles that you see in competing brands and I'd buy their products again if I had to. The place where things look most interesting is with 3rd party apps. The Raymarine Lighthouse III operating system is an Android product, and as such 3rd party developers can build their own apps and either sell or offer them as freeware for the Ray product lines. This allows enterprising developers to literally build the features that Raymarine hasn't gotten around to providing. With time, I think you see some pretty cool stuff being offered.

    The tape should have been above the holes and circled around the holes also. Nice install though.

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dale. I'd agree except that the big holes were already there. Mostly, the new Raymarine products are interchangeable with the old, except for the four small mounting holes. This allows the instruments to be secured from the front instead of needing access from behind like the old version. Part of the challenge was that the large holes were not centered on the panel. I did a little extra grinding with the Dremmel to improve the pattern, but could only go so far without the big holes starting to peek around the edges of the instruments. Thanks for watching as always.

    Hi Kevin, great advice as always, i wish i had your engineering background. One question those speakers you Put on the strip with your new instruments, who makes them? Ive been trying to find speakers the size of Raymarine instruments for a while now. I took four old ST 50s off my panel and replaces with i70 and p70.

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith. Those are Simrad speakers from some previous install. They don't work (might work?), but I suspect they were there to supply sound from a VHF radio. So many changes to the electronics over the years. I love the i70 and p70s that we have, and in fact used two more i70s at the nav station since they offer such a range of data. I think I'm finally there with getting the electronics up to modern standards.

    Hi Kevin, love the OCD qualities.
    With going to the i50 and i60 are there certain new features you are hoping to use? Just wondering how much of the upgrade was driven by a need for a missing piece of functionality vs. replacing old, non-working electronics. Thanks as always for a quality vid.

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi SB. Good questions. What you surmise is correct. As I went to move the functioning (but separate) ST60 and ST60+ components onto the new backbone, I was getting either no data or corrupted data. Raymarine sells the yellow backbone bridge to bring these ST1 components over, but they no longer offer firmware revisions and so there can be issues. I also found that the temp sensor portion of the speed transducer often fails, as mine did, and it will prevent the network from seeing speed if this is so. You can add a 100ma resistor over the white and brown posts of the ITC-5 to trick it into seeing 70 degree water temp, and therefore getting your speed back, but I just gave up and bought a new speed transducer. Obviously, none of this is shown on the video, but all is well now. i50 and i60 instruments are great for what I used them for here, but i70 is the way to go elsewhere as they are so much more versatile. I already had one on my Navpod at the binnacle, but added two more at the nav station, and these are great to have. You can even make you own custom pages, which I did to see SOG, Boat Speed, DTW, and ETA, all on the same page. i50 and i60 are specific to what they report (wind/wind angle, depth, speed, or tridata. Pretty limited.

    Hi Kevin, do know that you should be flushing down your Exterior Teak with salt water? This kills the algae that comes down with rain. I ask this as I see a green tinge on you cockpit seats.

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William. Indeed. That's how we got things cleaned up in Troon, Scotland where the algae was thick after years on the hard. I think what you're seeing is a trick of the light or the camera. The teak has actually become quite bleached in the strong Greek sunlight. Thanks for watching.

    I concur with the Orville’s comment, why are you spending time and money on gadgets you don’t need, when you could have been taking the lovely Wendy to dinner for the next couple of years?

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anthony. I agree in theory, except that the autopilot actually needs wind and speed data in order to work to the best of its abilities. As it was, with wind and speed on the "old" network and the autopilot and control head on the "new", it had no way to calculate vectors on the chartplotter and probably no ability to compensate for drift (leeway). It made up for this with GPS fixes, but still hobbled I'd say. A whole bunch of new features began to show up after the install, but these could also have been improvements to the Lighthouse III OS. As for the dinners, I'd rather give up on cruising if meant I couldn't do dinners out with Wendy. She's the best company and most beautiful girl no matter where we go.
