early 2000's, i ripped this audio and made part of the chorus my internal voicemail greeting at work. Nobody there understood that you could have separate internal vs external vmail greetings, I nearly got fired. Worth it.
Lol I saw Dana do this on a comedy show when I was a kid. My mother ate a lot of broccoli and I would always sing this song to her. First time I did she looked at me and said "I'm not chopping broccoli, I'm heating it up, its frozen!" So literal ma!
I remember seeing him do this in one of his live stand up sets before the SNL audition. Longer, much more outrageous. He totally freaked out on that lyric toward the end. It was like a full body dry heave set to music and it was awesome.
I saw Dana Carrey perform in houston, at the (now gone) Music Hall. He performed this song, as a part of the act. I laughed so hard, all throughout the show…I cried and laughed, and cried some more, because my facial muscles were cramping from the laughter. This man is a genius.💋
I remember the skit this became as a kid, my friends and I nerded out in 6th grade over SNL back then, we would quote stuff all the time. Cool to see it was from Dana's audition tape.
I live in NorCal and worked for a woman who had a catering company. Dana and his wife Paula lived in the East Bay and were one of her regular clients. Just nice, nice people. She even hired his brother, Mark, to work a holiday party with us in SF one Christmas. Mark is who he based Garth on. Shy and quiet, but talented. Mark is an accomplished painter. Sounds exactly like his brother when he talks. I gave him a ride home that night, and he barely spoke five words to me, lol
this the first thing i saw Carvey doing, back in the mid 80s. was on Nickelodeon i think, and it was like a variety show, or an awards show, something like that. i thought at the time, that's different, guy's got a great personality, funny. i was like, we're probably going to be seeing more of this guy, and we did!
1:31 “wOh yea’ “ 😂😂😂😂😂😂 literally the same as he later performed in a live skit on the show. Somehow this one is even funnier!!!!! Dude is hilarious!!!!😂😂😂
And he became Presidents Bush, Clinton, Biden, a million impressions of others and Church Lady. He's had some challenges in life so it's great to see Dana back on SNL where he is loved.
This ended up becoming the first skit I ever saw of Dana Carvey on SNL. I remember thinking it was super awkward and that this new kid probably wasn't going to make it. Thankfully, I was not the head of casting for SNL.
I still randomly sing Chopin’ Broccoli. My kids have been tortured with it their whole lives.
😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍
It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it 😅
My kids and yours have something in common.
Your favorite Mortal Kombat character is obviously Raiden.
Haha. Me too 😂
Dana... one of the best that's ever been on SNL!
Anyone noticed how incredibly relaxed he was in this audition? The facial expressions tell you everything you need to know. He had absolutely no fear!
It's a skit not an audition
@@crosseyedcricket2394 I was just going by the title of the video where it says "Audition".
I think it was an actual audition… you can tell at the end
There’s a guy who knows you need him more than he needs you.
@@crosseyedcricket2394a skit with no laughter? Where he stands up at the end and says “thank you very much?”
The Choppin Broccoli bit is still damn funny after all these years
Thank you algorithm for bringing me this laugh today.
The look of satisfaction as he came up with the next line was perfect. Little did SNL know they were sitting on a goldmine.
Oh I think they knew.
Have you seen his standup where he does this joke to perfection?
@@hipponotic4823 I search it!
About 35 years old, and still about the funniest things I've ever seen. Saw it when it 1st aired.
And for 30 some-odd years this song is still in my head whenever I find myself....choppin broccoli.
Dana Carvey was 31 to be exact
lol. I love it.
Phil Hartman and Sigourney Weaver brought the skit to new heights playing record execs with their look of ecstasy hearing the song.
Well....if my neighbors didn't know I was crazy, they know now because howling laughing and singing this. It's almost midnight. 🤣🤣
The comedic talent in this young man is simply amazing.
It’s crazy though. He’s 69 yo now.
You are easily amazed.
I saw him do this very skit at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach in 1987 - we were all crying with laughter!! 😂
Damn! F*ck! I COULD have seen that. Thanks for putrefying my soul. 🤦🏻♀
I still have the SNL bit recorded on vhs from back in the day. Watching Phil Hartman in that gig is still hilariously funny!
RiP Phil .
I love that an audition bit became a staple comedic moment 😅
What a little heart throb he was!
early 2000's, i ripped this audio and made part of the chorus my internal voicemail greeting at work. Nobody there understood that you could have separate internal vs external vmail greetings, I nearly got fired. Worth it.
Respect.
To this day I cannot be around a bag of chopped broccoli without this song starting to play in my head.
That "chopping broccoli ouh"...gets me every time.
Such a slick, charming perfect delivery! And so handsome.
Definitely the best if not one of the best that SNL ever had
Got that one backwards
Definitely dyslexic, if not just an accidental reversal of thoughts.
The little twitches in his face is what does it along with his ability to bring emotion to bear.
Yes. The nose flares
2:08 his eyebrow
he actually did this on one of the SNL shows, he's so awesome!
He’s done this bit many times over the years. He even brought it back a few years ago for SNL’s 40th anniversary.
Omg! He’s so freaking cute and the facial expressions.. always a winner!
incredible talent. Never any doubt of his comedic genius.
Carvey is beyond brilliant!
World Class Act. Love chopping broccoli, soooo much talent. My favorite guy on SNL.
I watched this episode when he did it on Saturday night Live and my husband and I for so many years after that, it was chopping broccolay!
Guy’s naturally funny, thanks for making me laugh ❤
No wonder he got the job! I still love him.
So professional! Great presence!
I did NOT KNOW he could 1. Play the piano or 2. Sing like this!
You ever watch him him play drums? Hes a gifted dude, no doubt.
Lol I saw Dana do this on a comedy show when I was a kid. My mother ate a lot of broccoli and I would always sing this song to her. First time I did she looked at me and said "I'm not chopping broccoli, I'm heating it up, its frozen!" So literal ma!
That was from Turkey TV on Nickelodeon. They used to play parts of Dana's stand-up act.
Little did he know at the time that “Choppin’ Broccoli” would go platinum and be covered by dozens of the greatest rock legends.
2:17, right as it fades out... there's Garth's smile. A vision of the future.
Party on!!!!
I saw it too! 😂
I like to play.
I remember seeing him do this in one of his live stand up sets before the SNL audition. Longer, much more outrageous. He totally freaked out on that lyric toward the end. It was like a full body dry heave set to music and it was awesome.
This old nugget still pops in to my head from time to time. 🎶

"Houston Music Hall was a 2,200-seat music venue located in Houston, Texas. The Music Hall opened in November 1937... [and was] demolished in 1998."
I still sing this to this day. Lol
Saw Dana perform this at my Spring Fever weekend at Albright College (late 80's,early 90's) in our community center. Always a great memory.
One of the very best on SNL.
Hes just so adorable...then and now💛✨💛
Hahaha!! That is amazing. He is a legend.
To this day, I can't chop broccoli without thinking of his song. 😂
I remember the skit this became as a kid, my friends and I nerded out in 6th grade over SNL back then, we would quote stuff all the time.
Cool to see it was from Dana's audition tape.
Well isn't that special?
Omgosh i love choppin Broccoli..he freakin awsome
What a talent....oh so cute💖
I am laughing out loud! This reminds me of my three grandsons when they get together. They are so stinking funny… making no sense at all. Love this.!
"A long time ago there were lots of people."
I live in NorCal and worked for a woman who had a catering company. Dana and his wife Paula lived in the East Bay and were one of her regular clients. Just nice, nice people. She even hired his brother, Mark, to work a holiday party with us in SF one Christmas.

This always reminded me of Dennis DeYoung and Styx.
It was a mashup of Foreigner and Styx 😁
When I saw it the first time I thought of Billy Joel
Me too! Suite Madam Blue
OMG, I forgot that the broccoli-song existed! 😂 My sisters and I used to torture our parents with this song

Dana's vocals omg 😂🥰🔪🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦
When I seen his comedy show back in 1997 I laughed so hard I about passed out.
Cracks me up every time!
I needed this today.
Slam dunk audition, I wonder how long they took to call him back?
Probably didn't let him leave before they hired him.
CLASSIC 🎉❤
I see this has been returned by the algorithm!
Just discovered this today - going to quote this a lot
Anybody who saw him Spinal Tap knew he was destined for greatness.
My kid is so savage! At 7, today, this 29th of November 2024, just said, "I like the part when he didn't say anything!" Savage!!
Wow sounds great 🤩🤩
I saw him do that skit in a comedy club in Walnut Creek in the early 80’s .Fubars, I think, funny as hell.
1:31 “wOh yea’ “ 😂😂😂😂😂😂 literally the same as he later performed in a live skit on the show. Somehow this one is even funnier!!!!! Dude is hilarious!!!!😂😂😂
Hilarious. He is sooo hilarious. He does the be Joe Biden impressions too. Awesome. Thank you Dana. I will laugh every time I see broccoli😂
One of the best SNL comedians EVER.
Absolutely hilarious! I had never seen this until today. Funnier than most of the skits you see on SNL nowadays.
He and Mike Myers doing Wayne's World was some gold plated stuff.
Best Billy Joel impersonation I have ever seen.
that was ridiculously brilliant
When he said “she’s choppin broccoli”
... I felt that
This guy is so talented and always funny to watch
Dana's talent pool is so wide it's incredible.
I know! (He can even chop brocco-lay… hey…!)
Now all we need is Phil Hartman doing his best American Psycho impersonation in the background. 😅
And he became Presidents Bush, Clinton, Biden, a million impressions of others and Church Lady. He's had some challenges in life so it's great to see Dana back on SNL where he is loved.
I still can't chop broccoli without singing this song.
OMG. I cant take it!!!?!😸
I hope everyone noticed he was actually playing the piano and singing. He has a good voice
nailed it!
this is as good as it gets
This ended up becoming the first skit I ever saw of Dana Carvey on SNL. I remember thinking it was super awkward and that this new kid probably wasn't going to make it. Thankfully, I was not the head of casting for SNL.
This was a big hit but his follow up song, Mincing Onions, blew up...
His expressions are hilarious!
"iffAYE DIDDUNNOHUHH.........sheedbethe _laaaatey................ayediddunnoh.........couldas ayce......wouyeh....."_
"she Chop- *_æugh"_*
Saw this in his stand up as a kid, still funny.
Choppin Broccoli was his audition? Wow man lol I didnt know!
He did this on Jimmy Fallon's show with orchestral strings!
Get's me through making dinner ;-)))
This is actually a clip from a stand up show he did a while back, I have the DVD on my shelf.
2:03 Goosebumps. I kid you not.
exactly
I got it at the "she's cold as ice" part. He actually sounds like a really good singer there.
That's a poignant song for sure 😂
Nailed it !
Got my theme song now when my chef fiance is doing any kind of prep but especially when I see the brocallay-eh come out!
I feel like Tim Robbins based his Bull Durham character, Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh (aka "Meat"), off of this Dana Carvey audition.
Ummmm...you're hired.
I never will forget that stand up he did
My husband and I will sing this off and on…lol
Channeling Paul Williams
Wo-ya
Oh ye
😂 Aw he’s so young here. Talented guy. Still. 🎤
I learned how to chop broccoli by watching this.
Actually better than many songs.
