In today's video we do the ultimate smackdown, Spring gun V PCP. We pit the Air Arms HFT 500 against my TX200HC at 30 yards, 45 yards and 55 yards and then we see what the difference is when we take a supported standing shot.
Gary is running this airgunning vlog - At the Range with Gary Chillingworth - every other week on Shooting & Country TV, so make sure to subscribe to the channel and keep and eye out for his videos if you love air rifle shooting. It will be a mixture of air rifle reviews, air rifle shooting technique advice, and tips for Gary's specialist subject - HFT. Excellent vid , very informative and imo the correct conclusion, I still prefer a springer though 😊

Thanks for another great video Gary, and a clear conclusion. Spring gun is the clear winner, because they are very accurate and much more fun to shoot.

I love my PCP and Springers, PCP easier to get accuracy for sure and Springers require more thought and are more sensitive to hold etc but perhaps more satisfying when you get it right. Thanks for sharing.

The wind has been a nightmare on the course I shoot at. Amazing, it can take 10 points off your average score. I definitely need to practice more in Windy conditions. I thought you did brilliantly Gary at 54 yards, that was some epic shooting in that breeze. 👍

With regards videoing the targets the best way (IMHO) is a camera and an optical zoom

Hi Gary, interesting video. I wish my aa510 would shoot as well at 50 yards as my 30 year old HW77. I've found over the years that pcp's are a lot easier to shoot but I can't say more accurate. It all depends on the rifles and the shooter I suppose🤔😀

I do not shoot hft but enjoy both springers and PCP , maybe protect the camera with a piece of clean plexiglass ? Oh and your dog is gorgeous 😀

For the target shots you could get a cheapish secondhand bridge camera capable of 1080p. They tend to have a good optical zoom so you can record from a safe distance .

I think that the spring rifle won 🏆 at 55 yards.

I use polystyrene to zero/pellet test. A small dot with a marker pen and away you go. I’m not sure how well it will come out on camera but there’s one way to know. We have things delivered in polystyrene boxes so I have plenty to use up. Don’t put your backstop too close as you can get splashback

Gary, Great video by the way. Videoing can be tricky if you are not used to filming in high quality.
I do not know what phone you are using or any video recorder but I can give you some tips.
Phone: Make sure you have set your resolution to UHD or HD, This should help with pixelation ( coloured squares that create the image ).
Cropping in whilst recording then cropping in afterwards will deteriorate the image, remember that PHONE cameras only use digital zoom.
There are two ways around this if your phone is old like me!
1 Get an up to date phone with 4K resolution for videos
2 Get a small camera with a manual zoom function
Good lighting helps a lot as well, poor dim wet days effect the image a lot, they become image noisy (like lots of specs on the video) and out of focus.
They say.... ( I will hold judgment on this so please take this as a pinch of salt ) you can purchase zoom lenses and adapters for phones and it will help out heeps!? I hold judgement as I am a videographer and photographer and my opinion will be bias.
    Hope this helps.

Someone brought some left over roofing tiles to our club, the modern “slate” version not proper slate and the pellets left fantastic holes in them akin to flat heads on card. If you can get hold of a tile or two give it a try

    Great video, Gary. 👍
As far as camera work goes, you may just not achieve it with your particular phone.
The best way to achieve clarity is with optical zoom.
A reasonable bridge camera or even a compact should do it but only using the optical zoom.
The reason being that as soon as you zoom digitally, either on the camera whilst filming, or in post edit, you’ll lose clarity.
    Good luck 👍

can you make a video on how to shoot with a springer for 3 position competition, because I haven't found the right technique so the results are not good, but if it is shot on the table the results are very good

Great video, you could place your targets on a thermal type building block as the pellet is captured within it and ricochet onto your camera would be unlikely.

Hi Gary, I really enjoyed the video but was expecting the PCP to come out on top. With regards to your question on the target, I also have a TH-cam channel and I generally film using 2 phones. On the target phone I use an app called PhoneSkope as you can adjust the focus to different ranges. I also tend to use a white background with an orange sticker or black permanent marker to aim at. Perhaps this helps you. You won't know unless you try I guess

Great video and agree with you, but your TX is your competition gun if you done the same test with a PCP and a springer out of the box and I think the PCP would win by a bigger margin as they are more consistent before any mods are done to the springer?

He did say at the beginning of the video that a well sorted springer can be as accurate as a PCP.

Could you use a peace of clear perspex in front of your camera and get it closer 🤔

I would be more worried about your health mate. Start looking after your self. All this shooting stuff is important but not that important 👍🏻
