I would agree with most of the people who have commented on this video: - Very concise and to the point commentary - Easy to Understand instructions - At each step you allow the listener to absorb the previously conveyed information before moving on to the next step - Pace is very important, and you have nailed it If I were your adviser, I would suggest you publish a detailed QGIS Course at websites like Linkedin Learning If you have more tutorials planned for Spatial Analysis in QGIS, I would be the first oje to be notified. I have already subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to more such kinda tutorials. Keep up the good work lady!
When I heard your voice in this video, I instantly told myself: "that's her, my favorite QGIS tutor online!" I first viewed your video on how to make proportional symbol maps a couple of years ago and really liked it, because it was easy to follow, elegantly presented and immensely helpful. Now I need to do field calculations and found this video by Samara. I couldn't be more grateful. Thank you! Subscribed!
@Samara, I have a question. Suppose I merged person-level income data into your municipality layer (e.g. 5k people in the City of X). Now, I want to calculate the average personal income in each municipality. I am not sure yet how that can be done because for each 'field' (i.e. municipality), I have thousands of observations. Any advice?
I'd look at the Basic Statistics for Fields option under Vector/Analysis Tools from the QGIS main menu. I think that might give you what you're looking for. Otherwise, it might be worth considering making the calculation outside of GIS and then joining the results your GIS dataset of municipalities afterwards.
Thanks for the work. I appreciate your style. It is very informative and has an organic flow in thought process. I have watched a number of qgis videos, and I must say your style is one of the most effective I have seen. Thanks again :^)
Awesome, thank you! Solved my problem of how to use a new field to combine numerical data from another field with a new text string. Clear language and good pace going over details.
This is really a great video. Clear and easy to understand. Congratulations. My only recommendation would be to rerecord with creaky voice set to off. I found the vocal fry distracting.
Hi Olivia - to calculate the sum of a column, go to the main QGIS interface (not the field calculator), click on the Calculate Statistics button (the Sigma symbol which looks like a sideways 'M') and then select your dataset and field you want to sum the values of). It will show you the sum, count, average and other statistics.
Thank you very much for this tutorial, and it's clear and well-explained. May I ask if it is possible to further provide insights about the "Function Editor" in the Field Calculator? That will be also much appreciated. Best.
Hi, glad you found it useful. For the Function Editor, do you have experience with Python already? Or are you new to Python? I honestly haven't used the Function Editor before but will look into possibly doing a tutorial in the future.
@@smebinger me too. I'm interested to learn. I have a basic python background but not often used. I want go in-depth tutorial. Can you make another? Thank you.
@@jonah7732 Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep this in mind for a future tutorial. I have some Python experience but not much specifically in QGIS but it's definitely something I myself want to learn! I did come across this tutorial a few days ago that you might want to check out: th-cam.com/video/5kqkxm0qfT4/w-d-xo.html

hi samara i hope your doing good i wanna tell you that your videos is very helpful thank you so much
Thank you very much. you solved my problem
You are very easy to understand, and make learning qgis easy. Will you be able to do a tutorial on qgis toolbars?
Any particular toolbars you’d like covered?
Nice explanation
