I loved Woody Guthrie since I was a small child but Andy Irvine is my true love. Missed a chance to see him in Toronto in the '70s and in my 60's have seen him live in Ontario, Newfoundland and Cork City, Ireland. I have posted on youtube a little recording I made in Ottawa 2019 . Why didn't I go see him in Toronto all those years ago? At the time I knew I loved Sweeney's Men but I did not know Andy Irvine was a Sweeney's man
What a journey Andy's has been, and mine is listening to him. I discovered Andy a few years ago when I heard Arthur McBride which led me to the Andy Irvine/Paul Brady album which led me to Rainy Sundays...Windy Dreams which led me to Planxty and more. Though I know he idolized Woody Guthrie and plays harmonica upside down a la Woody I never heard him do one of Woody's songs til now. Sometimes too much talent can be boring. Not Andy. There seems to be nothing he can't do with an acoustic stringed instrument while singing and playing harmonica too, but it's always with a joyful bounce. Also, there is a vulnerability to Andy's singing that makes it easy to love. Andy Irvine/Paul Brady changed my life and this brilliant recording is more delicious fruit from that tree. Thank you for posting from Philadelphia.
