Feel your pain fella. Been involved in many fire incidents in my 68 years. The danger is real, many people I know seem to think it is a glamorous undertaking when in fact it is one of the most dangerous tasks anyone can do. I lost a close friend and fellow firefighter during one particular incident many years ago. Gone, never forgotten.
Jack, that is some set up. I would always put the grass silage in the mixer wagon first then any grains. I found it mixes better. But each to their own. I am slightly OCD about the silage face so not having a shear grab would drive me mad. Mixing feed for cattle seemly doesn't change around the world, from minus 40 in Utah to plus 40 in WA. Really enjoying learning about your challenges. Thank you.
@buildmotosykletist1987 as you say, it is machine dependant, and a bit trial and error to see what works best for your ratio. I have always had vertical tub mixers, straw in, to chop first then grass, then any cake or blend. I guess I am doing via density, lightest first....therefore not dissimilar to you.
Star link is just awesome in the out back. Prayers are with your friends family. in country Aus we all deal with bush fires. Fingers crossed no big ones yet in Victoria. Stay safe.👍🇦🇺🙏
If they don't get on top of the burning off, we'll be in real strife in VIC in the next few years. They seem to be storing up all the growth creating a bomb. Where we are in gippy, we've had a few accidental burn-offs and a couple of mystery ones. That's becoming essential as they increase the "watch and don't ever act" attitude.
Here in the Pacific Northwest of the United States as well as the Midwest, we use Corn Silage. Ground up corn stalks covered with black material and allowed to bake ( ferment) to feed the cattle
Hi Jack, just curious, managed to find Esperance town on the south coast ,could you please give a list of the township you go through to get back to you station. We here in NZ cannot envisage the huge distances you travel nor the lenght and width of the station of one million acres. Thanks we all can enjoy a bit of your enlightenment. Cheers, Johnu
Cheers Jack, that was good. I didn't know silage was done like that, but I'm no farmer. So what?!! Camels are down near Esperance! Just googled it and sure enough. I thought you must've been up north or way out. Oh well, keep pinging them off and get back to normal. And not good about the fires claiming someone
The station, where I am is in the centre of WA, the farm where George and Tom are is near Esperance 😄 there's 1000km between us. They only have the pet camel there.
Sorry to hear ab the loss of a friend ,jack your videos are great a lot of varied content , i live innthe uk , but lived in wa 74-75 77-78, esperance i have been to, waiting for some night hunting, do you have much trouble with dogs? Best wishes steve uk
There's a few bloody big ones here in Oz too. In the last few years, grass fed has become a trend so we stopped finishing our Wagyu on grain now. Funny how trends change but our profits are better without the feedlot.
Hi from the UK Jack, love your videos, cant believe the amount of camels there are in Australia, been down under 6 times and just love the place and its wildlife. Last trip has to have been the best, we spent a few days at Jericho in Queensland. I stayed with a family on the edge of town, Shane was a roo shooter, he had just change from suppling the roos for animal questions Keep up the work and videos.
Good vid mate, be great to see more of the cattle down there wand what you do with them. I hope you got a shear grab in the future planning for the feedlot. Save a lot of time and a lot of feed waste. Have you guys run the numbers on the feed waste? Does the silage heat up much the way your having to fork it now? Fluffing it all up letting air in?
Jack, a Yankee here. So, of course I'm interested in your choice of caliber for your camel culls. Things move too fast in your videos to read ammo information off your cartridge boxes. What are you using, sir?
Pump action, wood stock bolt action and straight pull rifles are 308 Win. Believe he has a 223 and 300 wing mag around but not sure I've seen them yet on the channel as still catching up on the back catalogue.
Was listening to Elon Musk at his share holder meeting. The new version 2 satellites , you will eventually be able to text only from your mobile using the satellites . At speeds of 2 milliseconds each way , great for emergency communications.
A shear grab would so much more efficient, you can see the muck fork just dropping expensive silage all across the silage clamp floor and never reaching the cows...
What breed of cattle do you run there. Here in the state of Nebraska, USA it tends to be black Angus breeds. Black face is preferred over any white face. White face cattle are making a comeback some what now but 10 years ago you couldn’t find a white face cow in feed lots. It was that way for several decades.

Sorry about that

We usually add the driest first and wettest last as it mixes much better. [ You maybe use a different type of mixer? That seemed to mix OK. ]

Good one jack to see that part of the operation
Thanks for interesting insight into farm life! 🙃
That’s so sad at anytime but Christmas very sad 😢
Yes have ordered, school of the air great organisation.
I live in Colorado USA, We understand the fire issues.

Sorry about your mate..as you said a bad start to the year...It will pick up ..
Stickers in the post glad to support. Keep up the good work
Awesome! Thank you!

What an ingenius way to store your silage.
That's how it's been done in Oz since I was a nipper 7 decades ago. How do you do it ? tia.
bought your stickers young fella great show keep up the good work
Legend!
how can i get your station stubbers coolers mate
@@jack_out_the_back

Camels have been seen in the Esperance shire at times. More so in the north east.

Hey Jack, fires are heavy work well done for what you did on that day cheers
Very similar to how it'd done in feed lots in Nebraska, USA. They are on a huge scale here, 1 square mile of fat cattle on feed is common.
There's a few bloody big ones here in Oz too. In the last few years, grass fed has become a trend so we stopped finishing our Wagyu on grain now. Funny how trends change but our profits are better without the feedlot.
Hi Jack How many Acre,s Down at Neds Corner Farm

The silage gets boiling hot, too hot for my hands.
Hey Jack - how many total head of cattle do you all run?
Just copped the sticker pack
Just wondering, why is mixer parked that far away??? And why didnt fork tractor go for big loads instead of half loads???😵💫🍺🍺👍
A Shear grab would increase your efficiency
I enjoyed the explanation about the silage process.
what is the reason you use a fork and not a scoop to get the silage in the mixer?
Sorry man that hurts

Also likes to use a smaller caliber for clean up work after camels are down, a lot cheaper.

I'm still waiting with my ticket to Mars on the Hyperloop. He promised it will be any day now.
CANADIAN beef farmer here . what is your ratio grain to silage .Prince Edward island ,about 90 10 silge to grain .
10-15% grain/ bean mix. Depending on how the cattle have adjusted to the feed ration after being in the desert.
Where’s Ant at Jack ??? I miss watching him
When you do your shirts any change of 4xl big man shirt ? Or what’s the largest your getting I prefer to big than too small.
We went for black shirts as there are more size options. So we should be able to do 4xl

Ubi stuff is great .... apart from them wanting you to buy there dongle (my fam run a ISP in Gero )
How far away is the barley grown?
On the same block, so it was actually the paddock the pit is in.
@@jack_out_the_back: How's the barley going ? We've had great yields and prices have been really good with the exchange working our way.
Wouldn't it be more economical to use a bucket on the tractor for the silage. We use a bucket for the loose silage there isn't so much wastage :-)
Yeah it would be. Especially if it had a grapple.
You can get specific designed silage grabs.
Jack, where’s Ant ,we miss his droll humour
Great video againJack, do you not have shear grabs in Australia? They keep the face a lot cleaner and keeps the air out and stops a lot of waste. 👍
Have you thort of getting a shear grab for the sillage it keeps the front solid so reduces spoiladge of it
Cant understand why you dont use a front end loader instead of tines. I
A fire fighting Dozer could have helped
Do we know they did not have one. Minor footage from fire fronts.
They would have used a few mate.
