  • A playthrough of Interplay's 1995 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure.
    For as long as I've been old enough to tell a coherent joke, I've had an inexplicable fascination with the ones that largely exist to offend people's sensibilities. I guess every boy of a certain age probably goes through that, but I can still quite well appreciate fart jokes, women jokes, religious jokes, Goatse - I can laugh forever at any and all of them. The lower brow they are, the funnier I usually find them.
    As a kid, I loved all of those things in my video games. For whatever reason, though, Boogerman never appealed to a tween me when it first came out. I didn't play it until several years after the SNES had officially been killed and buried, but everytime I've played it as an adult, I always think of how a younger me would've gone crazy for it.
    The game is a standard, fairly linear platformer like countless others in the 90s. You run around, collect stuff, kill enemies, and run to the exit. Nothing special there, but it does play well. The controls are a bit loose but they're reliable and simple, and the game poses a challenge without being too hard.
    But really, the game is more a vehicle for whatever nasty imagery the good folks at Interplay could pack into it. Jumping on boils growing out of the floor nets you bonus points (with an exceptionally moist sound, no less!), getting sucked up into a giant nostril teleports you across a level, and snot covers nearly every surface in view.
    Your weapons are the truly classy bits though - you can flick bogeys at the enemies, or you can wipe them out by launching burp and fart attacks. Not only do you have a short and long range version of the gas attacks, but you can also upgrade them with items. Are your boogers just not doing enough damage? Drink some milk, thicken that phlegm, and hock a heavy wet glob of lung butter at them instead. Not enough methane in your growling bowels? Eat some chili peppers and watch Vesuvius erupt! Obviously, this is a game with real sense of propriety.
    The nicely animated graphics, catchy music, and clear speech and sound effects should be mentioned, too. They sell the grossness well.
    The humor certainly gives Boogerman its personality, and while the gameplay never quite set the gold standard, it's well above average for a SNES platformer. Even if you stripped it of its theme, it would still be a thoroughly playable, well-produced game.
    But still, what fun would that be when the game invests so heavily in being objectionable? If ever you had wanted a game that would've drawn looks of disgust from your mom, this would've been a top pick.

    I remember playing this with my dad. It was really cool because my dad grew up playing it and then he handed it down to me. Such a great game and it reminds me so much of the good times with my dad. I miss him dearly.

      @Aevilbeast ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@TStewartfan09 Umm..It was released on both the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo (The SNES version actually had better animations, sound and slightly improved controls, and was generally considered the better version all-around), and it was developed by Interplay. So you're completely wrong on every level.
      Ya know, you really should make sure you actually know what you're talking about before you try and correct someone otherwise you end up looking pretty silly.

    Boogerman is just as much of a class act as the title would imply. If you like gross out humor, this game does it like nothing else from the 16-bit era. It's actually a pretty good game, too.

      @@Dorian_Scott It is the exact same damned game, how is it better? If you say music, then you are way off, the music heard here fits the theme of the game far better than the Genesis version. The game is whimsical, the music is whimsical, and the SNES version nails it perfectly. This isn't some serious dark game with dark music, it's a damned comedy game about burps, farts, boogers, and snot. This game isn't even close to the better platformers on the SNES or Genesis, not even another game put out by Interplay (with Shiny), the Earthworm Jim games.

    • @Dorian_Scott
      @Dorian_Scott 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Bloodreign1 The Genesis OST just sounds more clear and has better use of instrumentation than the SNES OST. I *_DO_* think the latter is fine, too. But, this is another case of the SNES music being in the background rather than being prominent, like the Sega version.
      Out of all your responses to my comments, the OST from *_"Boogerman"_* of all things? (🤨????)

      Agreed. Look at 1:08:32
      BMan: Catches the villain in his secret lair by besting all his servants in mortal combat
      "Ah hah!"
      BMeister: "Well well, if it isn't Boogerboy himself!
      "I'll finish you off, then *your world will be MINE-!"*
      BMan: Unintimidated by this hulking, eight-foot tall abomination of a man possessed by some horrible pink creature inside him. Defiant and sure in his righteousness to the point where he doesn't even acknowledge any of the context of the threat. Even though this thing just told him he was literally about to murder Boogerman and then conquer his world through ungodly gross sickness and plagues
      *"Not if I stop you first!"*
      Boogerman is such a chad. He's just some smelly dorky janitor weirdo who saw that the machine which would save the world was in danger and quickly puts together a silly outfit. And goes to become a fucking super hero using his congestion and bodily issues TO FIGHT MONSTROUS ALIEN CREATURES FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION ON THEIR HOMEWORLD
      For the greater good. Not for glory. Not for gain. No one even knew he was doing this, he was alone in the lab that night, and I'm sure the time dilation between dimensions made it so he was only gone for like half an hour, but for him? It was hours and hours and hours of battle he willingly sloughed through to save his people.

    "The SNES version is a solid improvement over the Genesis game that it was ported from"
    Does that include the cropped screen resolution?

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It never bothered me too much, but in all honesty, that's probably because I played the SNES version first. You can't miss what you don't know, right?
      But it wouldn't have been a simple case pulling the camera farther out. The sprites (and usually the backgrounds) in these old 2D games all used raster graphics drawn directly on-screen from the game's memory, so to resize them, every bit of art in the game would've had to be redone for a new resolution by hand. At this resolution, merely scaling them down would turn them into a pixelated mess.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah my bad, I just realized I kinda half responded to both of you guys in the same message. You made a good point, I thought. I never noticed that before you said it tbh, but you're totally right. That is a good compromise that some games did make. I actually went and loaded up Lion King on my SNES and then loaded up the old PC version (basically SNES colors at Genesis resolution), and the screen is cropped but it does nicely avoid that problem of not being able to see far enough ahead.
      Yeah, I remember being so annoyed so many times at Sonic. Doing super well, moving super fast, oops.... no more rings.
      I didn't know about EJ2 either, that's another one I've only ever really played on PC. I'll have to check it out.

      @Joshua Farrelly "SNES side-view games that scroll with your character positioned farther back than the center of the screen. Some games would adjust the position of your character as you reach full speed, like Donkey Kong Country"
      Even that gets annoying, because of the way the camera jars back and forth every time you change direction. What a mess. Genesis does.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Resolution doesn't change how a game play though, if you master one version, you can master the other just as easily. At this point it's no longer sound or graphics that Genesis fanboys try to come at the SNES fans with (and look foolish doing so as graphics tended not to be too different between the 16 bit consoles, sound on the other hand, different can of worms), but about screen res. I swear I have seen a ton of posts from Genesis fans using that as a weapon against SNES fans, sounds like last resort to me.
      As for me, I collect games for both consoles, so I don't give a damn about resolution, or none of the other fluff. If the console had games I like, I buy said game if it isn't too expensive, SNES or Genesis, or SFC or Mega Drive.

      I'd love to kill the princess by farting her to death. How about just giving Boogerman's moves to Wario? :) He's off-putting enough to make those moves appropriate. I think you're right though. Nintendo wouldn't go for it.

    For all the shit Kickstarters that actually get funded its a shame that this 90's classic's sequel didn't get funded. Butt hey if the Bubsy revival taught us anything it's that any 90's franchise can be brought back. "Weather it was needed to or not." Here's looking at you yah nose goblin.

    Yes it’s gross humor but you know, there’s always someone who goes farther. See South Park...
    PS : this is not the grossest thing i saw. In my playlist of rarities and oddities, i have this th-cam.com/video/6RXH8JEP4DI/w-d-xo.html
    While checking suggestions when i watched Thunder in Paradise, i came upon a game called Fox Hunt. I lack of words to describe this, but i can say that i had a good time.

      They almost are always triggered. They claim everything is better for their console, when that wasn't always the case. I guess it's what you grew up on I suppose, and no one I knew other than 2 relatives had an SMS, and a few friends had Genesis consoles. Those friends would eventually dump their Genesis for either an NES, or an SNES.
