- Highlights from replacing my well water tank with a WaterWorker HT-32B pressurized water tank after the well pump start short cycling. As an average homeowner, I offer this video as reference only...I'm not a plumber. If you attempt this work yourself please make sure you know what you are doing or hire a professional if you don't. Thanks for the video, you stepped through everything very well. The water will drain out of everything much easier when you vent the system to let air in, keep the valve open by the filter and open a faucet upstairs. It's the finger over end of straw concept.

Thanks for making this video. It's exactly what I needed to see. I replaced my bad pressure switch a couple weeks ago and recently noticed the 'short-cycling'. Hopefully when I get home this evening I will only need to add air. But, if not, it's good to see another DIY'er showing how he did it.

Tip: Using a heat gun on the poly would have made it easier to remove it from the insert fitting .
I Changed my well tank out Saturday 4-15-23 and used the heat gun trick to remove the black plastic pipe from the nipple elbow.
I reused the same elbow (after thoroughly cleaning) and used the heat gun trick to get Nipple back onto the pipe.
It worked like a charm and made things super easy so thank you again!!!!!!

I just did mine today, for the 2nd time in 20 years. Great video for the do it yourself homeowner. FYI, most plumbers usually use Teflon tape, AND pipe dope.
I just put a new system in today fir my mother in law. I have zero experience on well wayer systems. So i basically did everything you did. All worked well except for a couple leaks. I didn't tighten the fittings enough due to thinking they would crack. Well lesson learned......iver tighten is better. I have to take it all apart tomorrow......good video brother

Thank you for your 'life saving' advice. Thanks to this, we were able to fix a problem we have had just before Xmas. We had a pressure tank with which the pump was kicking in every second or so and the water in the house came in pulses. With mixer taps the hot water and cold water would not mix and so in the shower or bath we were alternately scalded and frozen! It happened of course on Xmas Eve when we needed the supply to be reliable, and on Xmas morning with no more than your video I went out to our outbuilding and set to work to try to do something.
I managed to switch off the pressure tank and close the valve from the well, switched the pump off and then drained the tank completely. When no water came out I connected a standard tyre inflation machine to the valve on the tank and this expelled quite a few gallons more water making me think the pressure tank WAS water locked. Once all the water was out I closed the valves and repressurised the almost empty tank.
Finally when I opened all the valves to the well and so on, and switched on the pump, it worked better than it has for six months with seemingly normal function. So Xmas Day could happen with no huge inconveniences.
Our pressure tank is 21 years old and only 60 litres, so I am considering buying a new 120 litre vertical one. Would this be the best idea? Am I right in assuming that the larger pressure tank will deliver more water without the pump continuously cutting in, especially when we are pumping water up to the garden and greenhouses for irrigation?

Thanks for the great Video. Everybody is a critic but in my lifetime of plumbing, use Pipe Dope AND Teflon tape to sensitive areas like that. And after pulling Well pumps several times (no not the half-assed rigid) if you heat up the black pipe with a Propane Torch, it should come right off without cutting the black Pipe. Soldering Copper with good Flux and Good Solder works great if the surfaces are sanded or brushed inside and out. I will subscribe to your Videos!
When soldering heat the items being connected not the solder. When they get hot they will melt the solder. Use lots of flux when soldering as it pulls in the solder as it boils off and then feed in a lot of solder.

I am going to have to replace mine as well. Great video. Well done. But I have a few thoughts. First, I believe that you get better quality plumbing supplies from a plumbing store. Second, from my experience, its a good idea to use tape and pipe dope. The tape should be the Blue Monster tape. The white tape is junk. Needs to be thick tape. The pipe dope is extra protection against leaks. Every once in a while tape alone will leak. Its a pain to redo it just for that reason. If sch40 is involved, I use rain or shine glue. And always wait 15-20 minutes before turning the water on. Just to make sure glue is adequately bonded. Great job.
Was very helpful, I am going to be upgrading my well soon, I can't afford to pay a plumber so, I am going to educate myself and when I am ready, Take care of my house repairs. I already replaced my Hot water tank, Added shut off valves on all my lines, replaced many old pipes that were bad, Now, it's time to upgrade my well soon. I have a sediment filter on my black pvc line so hopefully I don't have any issues, I Have a Well X Trol Tank now and it has good ratings, I don't know how old it is since it was in the house when I bought it, it's at least 10 years old or more, My jet pump is a gould 1 1/2 hp. Not easy to find a new one but going try to keep everything the same, It was a great system, lasted very long so, no reason to trust anything else if I can get the same or close. I have had no water issues since I have been here and the casing was serviced a few years ago, hopefully I will just have to do all the internals, I will add a shut off valve on the casing lines just in case I have to replace anything outside. I love off grid living style and it has it's good points, But it does have a few bad ones, Takes a long time to go anywhere, being in the country means your not close to anything and nothing is close to you either. I have learned so much about Life itself and how to depend on myself for everything. I am glad we have Good People to learn from and It makes life so much better when you learn to keep Faith in God, You learn values in the words "God Created" Which is clearly seen in the things around us, You Learn the fake World Lies to the People of Earth, Science Lies about the Truth of Life itself, The Fake World is deception and brainwashing. not based on Truth, A matter of Facts and What Life really is. It took me a long time to overcome the Lies of this World, Good people of Earth, Turn off your TV, Understand what you see around you, Use your Logic to see the Truth and Trust no one or nothing you can't prove is True. Good video explaining the workings of a well pressure tank. Sounds like I hear a ham repeater ID'ing a few times in the background. I am a ham so I knew instantly what I was hearing. Also, funny to see how the cat is interested in the work. ;-)

very Helpful. I liked when you showed the pressure gauge at the beginning rising and falling rapidly. I would have liked to see the gauge in action after the new tank was installed and working. This would be a great comparison to see properly operation and problematic operation.

For that feed pipe at 8:08, you could have taken a heat gun or even a hair dryer to it for a short while and it would have soften it's grip on the copper pipe it's mated to. It would likely twist and slide off by hand after.
I understand your concern with liability and your disclaimer and IDK laws of posting such "instructional/how I did it" videos, but your steps were simple, to the point, and exhibited good decisions to replace old parts. Definitely add a filter between the pump and the tank. I wish you would have shown the pressure gauge after you completed the change out, to show the cut in/out as you did upon the start of the video, to truly show the difference it made afterward. Your video has nice details and btw, mistakes aren't limited to homeowners. Sometimes judgments (like needed pipe lengths) are off a bit. I am a pro and I know, lol. Really good job overall.

Everything looks good! A larger tank, 85 gallon, would increase your drawdown gallons, and pump would cycle less frequently than previously. For easier servicing, you should have added, 2 unions! One in soldered pipe and the other next to the plastic pipe, instead of coupling. I use pipe thread compound with Teflon and never use Teflon tape, never any leaks. Jim
PS…..I would have cleaned the TEE, expensive piece. Your old tank had a trap door on the bottom and the bladder might have been able to replaced, call the manufacturer for info.

I just did this job and the differences are that I started with Teflon tape and had leaks (and switched to pipe dope) and that I broke out the multimeter to ensure no voltage at the switch.
Did you need to adjust the pressure setting? If so, that would've been useful for others to observe.
One of the indicators I had, besides the pulsing pressure, is an elevated electricity bill since the pump is having to run more often. The initial start of the pump is a high demand event for the electrical system.

Great video. I have seen more than one person put a sediment filter between the well supply and the pressure tank. May reduce the gunk in the tank...
two unions the first time around would have let you tilt the tank and replace the bladder. would have saved you money and time . good video of the new install, thanks for sharing

Great Video ! You showed me just about everything I needed to know about installing a Well Pump. Don't think you should have exposed your license plate on the truck. To much information can be obtained from it. You make very good instructional video's.

How can you get any info off his plate. If you are law enforcement. I find it funny when people cover their plates because you cannot look them up. Your plates are exposed to the public all the time.

Thanks, very interesting. I was told you can replace the rubber bladders on those tanks. I think it comes out the bottom. I have never tried it though, so I have no idea if it is worth it from a financial and time perspective. I enjoy your videos and I appreciate your making them.

The Water Worker tank which is made by Amtrol (same company that makes the Well Xtrol tanks) doesn’t use a bladder. It uses a diaphragm which is not serviceable. As stated it looks like the old tank had a replaceable bladder which is located at the bottom of the tank. The water actually fills the bladder, not the air pre charge at the top which goes in the tank above the bladder.
You did a good job, it looks good. I had to replace my expansion tank on my hot water heating boiler last year, it's a smaller version of your well tank.
FYI, a plumber a long time ago told me to use both Teflon tape and pipe dope that it works best if you use both.

For future ref, to remove the black HDPE pipe, you should use a heat gun and warm it up, which will cause it to soften and from there it becomes easier to remove.

FYI when you do the next repair first but the ball value then put a union in the line then you proceed to do the repair not a bad video good explanation.
Just use PVC or PEX makes the job less stressful.

That black plastic pipe is easier to handle if it is heated first. I do it by wrapping a towel around the joint and pouring (slowly!) boiling water on the towel. It will soften the plastic so you can pull it off the connection. Or, you can try what I saw a well installer do: Use a propane torch directly on the pipe. I'll stick to the hot water.

water worker is an amtrol product......next time use a heat gun on the black pvc line for easy removal.
Just put union patente for easy removal in outlet and inlet line.
Looks like you did a good job! I've had better luck using teflon tape rather than dope. Small leaks will usually fix themselves after a day or two.

I had the same problem. I thought the air was low in the bag but after drinking tons of water i noticed rust in it and was actually drinking it. I had the Water Worker tank from Lowes. I am having a problem trying to get them to honor their warranty. I think i am sick now from the rust i have been drinking and i guess i have to get a lawyer and sue them for damages to my families health. These tanks are dangerous if the bladder fails and the average homeowner does not know if that happens and end up drinking water from the rusting tank. I called the Water Worker number and they refer you to someone else that does not know.

Thanks so much for this video...my pump has been pulsing every 10-12 seconds. A week or so ago, I added air to the tank and wonder if there is a problem with TOO MUCh AIR in the bladder? I THINK that I added air making the pressure more than 30lb psi.
I have a jet pump in my wellhouse (outside home making work a real cold PIA when necessary). After watching your video,I realize that sediment removal with a filter would be a real good idea BEFORE THE PUMP, SWITCHES, TANK, ETC...does anyone know if this is doable?
The tank in my ;house has the filter before the tank and it gets pretty brown after 6 months.
Air precharge on empty tank should be 2 PSI below cut in. So if cut-in pressure is 30 your tank when empty should be 28 PSI.

You may need a heavier duty setup than what I show here. If I were in your shoes I'd talk with a plumbing or farm supply business
The larger tanks come with 1 1/2 inch inlets.

I did not like seeing those 2 hose clamps to seal the inlet pipe. They aren't known to be a great seal for hard plastic pipe.
Double clamps on that black supply line is standard. It’s how it is done, they work just fine and last a long time.
Did you ever put anything or figure out a way to stop the sediment from getting to your tank? Said you would have to solve that problem eventually
Did you find a good sediment falter to install between the well and the tank? I need to replace my tank and all fittings as you did. I want to add a filter before water enters the tank as the filter "after" the tanks really catches a lot, BUT I have a new Hague filtration system and I fear it will fail due to the sediment build up in it. My other concern is how tough was it to get that black plastic looking line back on and clamped? (the one you cut with the hacksaw)
I don't especially like the looks of mine and want to do something different. I'll use the thread tape since I felt your pain with that tube of pipe dope stuff! Messy and not terribly dependable!

A filter between the tank and pump is BAD. If the filter is not maintained, it will clog and the pressure switch will not accurately sense the pressure the well pump is producing. This results in excessive pressure building on the pump side of the filter and could cause a major leak or worse. If the weakest joint happens to be the connection directly under the pitless adaptor, the pump and drop pipe could fall into the well and a whole new well may may need to be drilled which is expensive.

I need to replace my pressure tank. I'm afraid of losing my prime when the system is open although no one in these videos have that problem. Is there another one way valve down in the well that keeps the line full of water?
Good question. I'm not sure if an in-well pump looses it's prime the same way a shallow well pump would. You'll have to check with a plumber to be sure
Not experienced with the pipe dope is the answer, pipe dope was a round before teflon tape.
I used teflon tape to replace my well tank today, and I got 5 leaks.... Now I am trying a combination of teflon tape and pipe dope and see if it helps solve my problem.
The pros I’ve seen often use both at the same time. Also the fittings need to be tightened more than you might think.
I have two 1.5" PVC pipes going down into the well. What are the two pipes going down into the well for? Why not 1 pipe? Thanks Great Vid. Thanks again
One might be for the electrical wires if you don't see them running separately. Otherwise, I'm not sure why you would have two pipes either
Some well pumps are in the ground ...others are inside house usually sits near tank..2 lines cool the pump down as it runs..makes a loop....needs alot suction to pull the water up from well... ground....if u got a submersable pump = one inside well pipe in bottom of well..pump sits in cold water cooling it ...
My water well (70' deep) is 100' away from the house, where do I install the pump and the tank? Can I install a external pump (3/4) and the pressure tank (30 gpm) inside the utility room?🤔🤔🤔 what is a good setup (pump and tank) for a 2 bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room and utility hose?

Great Vid!! I'm getting ready to install my first pressure tank, is there a reason there's not a filter installed on your main water line before entering your fittings and tank? It seems to me this would filter out a lot of the sediment coming from your well. Thanks

@SevenFortyOne There is a reason not to install anything restrictive (like a filter) before the pressure switch. If a filter (or other piece) becomes clogged, it may prevent the pressure from building at the pressure switch which could cause your pump to turn on and never turn off (burning it out). Check with a plumber before you do this as there is a reason that the pressure switch is the very first piece of "functional" (not strictly plumbing) hardware after the pump.

How do we know what gallon size our tank is because there’s no information on it? Thx, our switch is kicking on and off every 3-4 seconds and water comes out of the air valve also. And, did you find a filtering solution before the tank to prevent buildup? Thx
I'm not sure how to tell u less it is stamped somewhere on the tank. I haven't put in a filter yet but probably will have to soon as this tank is probably getting near it's end of life and will need to be replaced again. This time, I'll probably consult a water company as I just don't have the time to do this myself anymore

No it ain’t. For one thing he drilled a hole in it.
That could just be condensation, just try draining your tank and letting it refill. Done that two years ago with mine and it still works fine.
I would have replaced with a tank with no bladder. I've had my tank for 30 years and just replaced because of leaking at welded fitting. My tank was outside for 30+ years with no cover so I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.
I’ve only had air over water tanks, so I’m jaded, but idk why you’d go any other way. My tees have been mounted about 1/3 the way up the tank, with water coming in at the top, and sediment settling to the bottom. (On top of a 1-1/4 full port ball valve)
With the new "lead free" brass you dont get as good of seal. Dont mess around, I use heavy tape or both tape and dope on gas lines so its a "once and done" deal.

How do you increase the pressure at the gauge? Mine reads 40 psi and the shower pressure is weak. Can I make it 60?
No, don't do that. Check with a licensed plummer for help

How did you connect the new tee connection to the new pressure tank? Hand tight, using one wrench, or using two countering wrenches?

With a pipe wrench. A pipe wrench's jaws are made so it locks on to a pipe in one direction.
