    The sawhorses I already had were great sawhorses built from
    Matthias Wandels plans, the only problem was, they were in the way inside the workshop, so I ended up leaving them outside and eventually they rotted away. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to make a foldable sawhorse while still staying fairly compact and I realised a three legged sawhorse would be an easy way to achieve that.
    My first steps were to mock up a three legged horse by just clamping pieces of studding timber together. I’ve always been quite skeptical of three legged sawhorses but I was surprised how stable it was. I decided to go ahead and build a 'Three legged foldable sawhorse'.
    Obviously a standard four legged sawhorse would be more stable but in 95% of cases the three legged sawhorse would be more than sufficient.
    The video is a little different to my normal style as I thought this needed more explanation - sorry that you have to put up with me talking so much.
    I hope you enjoy the video and as always I'm happy to answer any questions.

    To my way of thinking, you are a genius. You most probably don’t think of yourself as a genius, but know that you are a great inspiration to a lot of people. Thank you for that!

    You know what I like about your videos? They truly teach.
    You show your errors, corrections, and recollections.
    You explain to the new woodworker how to replicate what you achieved.
    It takes a great person to admit mistakes to others. I think that might be what draws me back to your videos.
    I venture to say you have a great wife, too!

    Hi Neil, I made these roughly a year ago. And I use them a lot, love the three legged design which gives stability on any underground. The foldability is a big plus as I have very limited storage space, they slide right under my workbench. So thank you for the inspiration!

      Hi Wiebe. I'm thinking of constructing a pair for my brother-in-law. They have just bought a house so this would be great gift. Did you find any problem or any improvement to be made?

    Makes a nice change to see someone cutting by hand instead of the ubiquitous chop saw. Most of these sort of videos assume you have a fully equipped workshop. Nice design as well.

    Very nice solution! In my version I would only round off a quarter of the top of the legs. Less work and it would create a stop when transporting the sawhorse. A further addition might be a small cleat to keep them in place when folded up. Thanks for the good idea.

    these have the benefit of a naturally slotted top when opened up in use so great for clamping stuff - almost makes a slimline portable workbench for small jobs similar in dimensions to those tall thin, long router/eye-level workbenches that some people make.
    you just use a piece of scrap 3/4 ply with a slot cut in it for the underside and a short bar clamp inserted into the sawhorse's slotted top and you're done

    Hello, Pask;
    Thank you for the design & specially for the plans.
    I don't do much 'woodwork' but I need sawhorses sometimes.
    I've been learning a bit of 'green woodworking'.
    It is fascinating.

    These are brilliant. I make collapsible sawhorses with my construction class and we end up using them to set senior student projects on top of for applying spray finishes. These would be perfect and take up much less space when folded up. Thankyou too for the refresher on speedsquare angles. Completely forgot due to lack of use and have been working with sliding bevels. I'll be showing my students the speedsquare method in construction next term.

      Follow up. The students took a bit to get their head around the speed square angles, but the result is more accurate saw horse angles because the angle can't be messed with like the sliding bevels.

    I've got a couple of commercially made folding sawhorses that are nice, but they still take up a lot of room in storage. These three-legged models are really intriguing. I am VERY anxious to build a couple and try them out. I'm thinking that a nice extra feature would be to put a drive a ring bolt or two in one end to hold a good suspension strap. This design is also a really good one for people who do a lot of wooden models and light craft work. They go up in a flash and give you lots of working and cutting room for small projects. Nicely done!

    You just taught me something new, I'd never used the speedsquare that way before. I've always tried to use it like a protractor, marking off both ends then drawing the connecting line! Thanks, man! Love this chanel. :) Tip when you're sinking a bolt head like that, step your drill sizes down. If you start with the spade bit, the center point will hold it nice and neat without wobbling, then you can drill your pilot and through hole off the center the spade pilot leaves. I realize this is a year old, and you've probably worked that one out for yourself by now!

    For added stability one could attach some braces that go from high on the two legs down to the bottom of the single leg, to keep the legs open tight to the stops, because triangles will make structures rigid. Clever folks might figure out a way to make these part of the folding design, possibly where a foot is made to receive both these braces and the single leg to create a wide stance on that end too. There are many ways a diagonal brace could be made. Granted, it is another piece but it could make these suitable for many more purposes with a small amount of extra material. Perhaps a sacrificial or adjustable height top plates or even table top could be made to sit in the gap left where the single leg folds. So many possibilities!

    Center leg can be reduced or space can be enlarged using several layers of craft paper - same as the cover paper on MDO plywood as used by signmakers. Reduce a long 2x4 or add 1-2 mm or 1/32 in the areas of 3.5 x 3.5 inches - dealers choice.
    When I make mine I will laminate oiled hardboard - masonite - as it is US 1/8 or about .181 and adds some contrasting color to the project. NICE PROJECT easy to make with hand tools and basic small drill driver.

    Add a shoe on the bottom with a swivel, and you can make a crosspiece which will ensure stability on the third leg while still allowing it to collapse into the other part. It'll be wider/deeper by the thickness of the shoe (i.e., stud width) but that's not much. Think of the third leg as an inverted "T" (┴) with a swivel right at the T juncture. Alternately, add some short steel square tube to that end for the shoe holding segment, for strength. Adds a little to the cost but you should be able to make it quite stable at that end, too.

    I love this idea! I'm going to make a couple this weekend, however, I'm going to try and add a fourth leg next to the existing 3rd leg. I'm going to make a bigger gap to accommodate the extra leg (plus a little extra as the two interior legs will have a very slight angle). The 3 legged version is perfect as is, but I tend to work on uneven surfaces and so I'm going to try a four legged version based on your design. Thanks for a great video!

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Keith! I thought about a version with four legs but I had them all fold on the outside. Regarding uneven ground, the three legged sawhorse (or stool, or table etc) will be naturally more stable than four legs. :)

    • @BoomerKeith1
      @BoomerKeith1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pask Makes - I didn't even think about the three legged saw horse being more stable. I had it in my mind it would be less stable (even though you clearly said it'd be more stable in the video). Obviously, on uneven ground it would be a lot easier to level with just one leg on that end. Thanks again, this is a great project and I'm on it this weekend.

    Here'w an idea. A fold out brace, 3/4" ply, that lives in a slot that runs vertically through one of two-legs that pivots out and hooks on a rod run through a matching slot on the opposite two-leg locking the two-legs together. If you want to get fancy, you cut the curve of the hook at the free end of your pivoting brace so it is a little eccentric to the axis of rotation so it will 'cam on' to the locking rod on the opposite leg to keep it from popping off.

    You can even adapt it and make a bicycle stand.
    Good one!
    Thanks

    Man, it was tough back in the old days of 2017...The electric circular saw or Mitre saw had not yet been invented...Also; all the bolts and nuts were hand forged! As a carpenter for 40 years!, Great Horses though! :)
