Good review and side-by-side's, but it has made me think about buying another mkii and buy more gear instead, very very minimal upgrades and like you say pixel peeping nonsense - mkii is still very usable today professionally!
Depends what you are shooting. this would make a massive difference if you were shooting a wedding in a church where flash wasn't allowed and you hadn't got fast prime lenses. The MkII is still a great camera though.
Great comparison. Thorough, concise and objective. I've been thinking about the 5D as my next camera for awhile now. I really appreciate all your videos. Keep up the excellent work!
Very nice comparison Karl. Thanks. But for my type of photography, I keep asking myself: is it worth it to upgrade. The answer is no! I'd rather get some nice L glasses than paying for the bells and whistles of 5DIII.
Hi karl, this video os published on 2012 and you are explaining why did you bought 5diii over ii. Now in 2017, why still are you using iii and didn't buy iv?
Dude, I do love your accent, the way you speak, the way you explain, and the way you interact with the gadgets. Your video should have 5 or more LIKE buttons... [clicking the only one LIKE button]
Great video as always, Thanks. I'm an amateur non-professional photographer, I went through tones of review and comparison but you explain things in much detail, so can you compare between canon 6d with MK3? Like dynamic range, auto focus, ISO.
Quick question, I'm no photographer, but for the comparison shots with flash, it seems like the MkII image had better saturation than the MkIII? Can you explain that? Thanks!!!
There is a photo store in my coutry that have two 5d mk2 in decent visual shape with about 90.000 shutter actuations. Should I buy one? Should I worry about shutter failing?
Thorough review. Difficult to see some of the differences on screen, as TH-cam is compressing the video, but it interesting information and useful for anyone considering buying a MK2 or Mk3 .The test at 1/30 for video as a shutter speed confused me a bit. Its testing at a speed too slow to produce usable video surely? All the camera folks I have worked with shoot at 1/50-1/60 for motion footage.
Now that's what a review/performance test should look like... real world kinda stuff. I know you also own a 7D, think you could do a comparsion with it and the new 5D mark 3?
cant go wrong with the battery grip! ive been using one since 350d,400d. currently saving up for a battery grip on my mk2, great video by the way! always in formative videos. cheers mate!
if you own a 5d 2 already, it is not necessary to upgrade to 3. I think one step upgrade is no necessary, so I always upgrade 2 steps. For example, from 5D to 5D 3, and from 5D 2 to 5D 4 (when it is available).
I presume you mean 3200? If so, I do, for handheld indoor shots without flash, at parties for example. Yes, Mark II was bigger breakthrough, but Mark III still a camera I really, really want.
Four times the price? I live in the UK (expensive for electrical goods) and I got my mark III nearly a year ago for under 2 grand, so I don't know where you are looking but maybe you need to widen your search!
Gads, your stuff is so good. Thanks for that. Did you color balance on the candles shot? I noticed the chip chart. If you did--I expect you did it manually? Are the color temp compensations between the two cameras comparable?
to me it seems that the mark 3 is less sensitive at the same iso than the mk2. pictures on the left are brighter than the ones on the right. which also might explain why the highlights looked better on mk3 -because they are less exposed.
Hey Karl, big fan of your work doing photography myself in a study in Holland! Few questions! Can you do a Low budget photography setup soon? And some light painting shoots? Much appreciation!
This is a very well done review, thank you! Do you think the 6D is better than the 5D MarkII because it's also running the digic5 processor? After watching your tests, I'm leaning towards getting the 6D now as I can't afford the MarkIII.
Would you say "Lightroom 4" is better than "Photoshop & Premiere elements 11"? I really shoot lots of photos but i also want to get started on TH-cam and use my canon 600D for filming. (I can't get "CS6" or "creativ cloud".)
Great video / canon 5d mark iii and canon 5d mark ii i didn't see much different in this both cameras is it worth buying 5d mark iii for a little bit of picture and focus system improvement i saw all your video you didn't use 5d mark iii much is that not good or what else? i want to ask because i have planing to buy this canon 5d mark iii :-D
Gonna take a year to save up for one but will be worth every dollar. The MKII is a great camera I started with and still get some amazing shots, but having the extra's always makes your think I could have had more images if the focus was quicker which the MKIII has. Another great review Karl, wonder if you've done any on some ND filters. Regards from OZ...
Having recently moved from the MK II to the MK III the video performance is fantastically better on the MK III. There is better DR, more controlled rolling shutter, a headphone jack, much improved audio monitoring, more accurate color, improved ISO (however it is softer at 6400+), and now clean HDMI out. This perils in comparison to the moire and aliasing benefits on the MK III, Virtually none! This allows you to sharpen in post resulting in much more professional images. ML 2K RAW is a godsend
I also wonder how 6D will perform in those same situations. If you make a similar comparison between 5DmkIII and 6D (when it comes out - just borrow it or something) I would be very grateful! Specaily about IQ, AF (accuracy and speed on 6d) and also video.
Excellent, but I can't afford a Mark III, but it's nice to know that the Mark II is a sensational camera none-the-less and is still a step up from my 600D.
Was just lucky enough to upgrade from the Mark II to the Mark III. The ISO performance and AF performance make it worth the extra money a million times over. Especially if you shoot moving subjects. The AF is just so, so, so much better/faster.
I really appreciate your honesty Karl..... Between these two cameras i noticed you didn't bring up the duel card slot factor.......quick thoughts on that? , is it a key factor?
I've never used the dual slots even though I have them on other cameras. Decent brand cards are pretty solid and not likely to corrupt, I've even put one through a washing cycle and it still worked. I suppose if you are really worried about losing your work or a card then it wouldn't hurt to use it, but compared to the days of shooting film a single card will do me fine. :)
@@VisualEducationStudio & this is why i follow this guy lol I just started shooting weddings & the soul purpose of getting the mark 3 was for the duel card slot & just needed a second opinion on that :) The first video i saw of you karl was your " Rant video " , That video? , kicked me in my teeth so hard.........It reminded me where i started and i actually caught myself guilty of the " gear envy " So thank you for that kick in the ass lol Thanks again for your quick response , Your train of thought is very much appreciated!
That's a great comparison. Thanks a lot. I'm not a pro but I'm beginning to do doing some payed work. A lot of it is low light stuff (indoor events). So high ISO performance is important. using 1/100 instead of 1/50 can make a dfifference. The thing I couldn't get my head around was the importance of high ISO with flash (unless you want to bump up ambient light in the background). How would you prcess high ISO shots in lightroom? Do you use export sharopening for web stuff? Thanks again! steven
Maybe it's just something with the TH-cam-encoding, but it seems to me that the mkIII doesn't have as much details (like in the texture of the lemon)... even with skin it seems like it uses something similar to "smart blur" to smooth things out.
I purchased my very first Canon and it's a Rebel T7 😕 so it's a not a full frame. The QUESTION: should I get the 5DMk2 or 3?? I like moon and star pictures and time laps stuff(dont know how to do it yet but that's my plan) which would be better????
Hi Maria, my preference is always for a full frame sensor like the 5D rather than a crop sensor, but that's primarily because I started out using 35mm film and am use to that format but there are other benefits to it too, in terms of lens choices, low light.
Great video, thanks! Just a question out of curiosity: I think most of the time you focus manually, but when using autofocus do you use the back button focus technique?
No one's going to argue that the Mk2 was a bigger breakthrough than the Mk3. But I often shoot between iso 6400 and 25600 in situations where I cannot control the light setup such as dimly lit restaurants or bars and outdoor evening shots in the wilderness.
Wow. Great comparison. I was under the impression that there was no image quality differences with Raw Still photography between the two cameras but mark III is a stop better and seemed to render color slightly better. Obviously not worth the upgrade if you shoot landscapes on sticks like I do 98% of the time but a very nice upgrade in all other arenas.
hey karl M a Canon user I use a 600D . I wanted to ask Are Nikon DSLR better than Canons? I mean 5Dmark III vs Nikon D600 ,D800??? I m planning to upgrade to a Professional DSLR which one should i go for? Should i wait for 7D Mark III?
Great review/comparison! This should be a blueprint to others on how to do product comparisons. Now, since you now have two MKIII’s, can I take your old MK II? :)
The difference in image quality alone doesn't justify the upgrade. I think you used the words "much much better" too many times, when in reality differences were minimal at best. Sure there is an improvement, but no a 1000 dollar one.
i ve both cameras and i agree with everything. Lcd screen of 5d2 was great but looks now prehistoric compared to 5d3. ISo capabilities are insane. Videos looks same quality BUT if you edited videos in adobe premiere, 5d3 videos are far better. The audio build in micro is far better too. the viewfinder is more clear .Fantastic AF system, even for portait or everything , highlight control is really better, for high contrast landscape, and building is finally serious.
Excellent review! The Mk2 now has doped in price, so I guess it's a great opportunity to jump to the Full frame world. And I think it's a great camera, although many people claims it has a bad auto-focus system. Should I jump from a 400D/Rebel XTi to a Mark2? :)
Canon MKIII is the best, athough i do think that sometimes APS-C is good over a full frame camera; that said, i will buy soon an MK3 as soon as i can afford one. (hello from France, Karl!, you are ready all over the world).
You really can't discount, as you did, the difference in focus capability. In my opinion that's the one thing that would make me buy a Mk3. The Mk2 is frankly very poor and slow in focusing in reportage situations.
great review karl .. i own a 5d mark iii and some zeiss lenses like the 18mm 3.5 , 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.4 i enjoy shooting video and landscapes/portraits .. i wanted to buy some filters for my 18mm could you help me out ? also , what lenses do you recon i could buy in my next purchase ? thanks
Wow .. great work! The technology is obviously better in mark iii over the ii cos iii is greater than ii .... !!!! Seems like a video made for doubters!! But the question is, how many people are gonna be shooting at the extremes to gain this point of difference? The other point is, it is not a big deal for Canon to keep pushing more and more models cos that is normal business for them. Whilst a majority of the parts will remain the same, a minority of better components will be swapped over for the next release camera or they simply juggle things around to keep people interested. For first time buyers obviously good for them, but for people thinking of upgrading it is total waste of money .. IMO one should wait for a truly next generation for an upgrade.
All cameras are just tight boxes that allow in a controlled amount of light - it's the glass you attach that is the clincher. Whatever 5D you choose, it's completely irrelevant in these days of post-production software.
If your planning on doing professional work then, either the mark 5D mark ii or iii would be the way to go, with battery grip for portraiture. 6D seems to me (In my opinion) more of a hobby-amatuer type full frame camera, with less professional features, like a partial plastic body, no CF card slot, missing buttons, (more like the 60D) and unlike most other people, I like a slightly heavier camera, makes it feel to me more robust and solid.
when you told your wife you where going to have a candle light dinner , I think she would have hoped for something different lol. thanks I got a second had mk2 and am so happy coming from a 550d. but good to see the changes
The difference seems minimal in these pictures, prehaps doing a cromatic aberation test would be better, i have heard this is the big difference between these cameras.
Oh well, I guess I made a big mistake. Either way, a 5D MKIII is great. But for someone who wants to jump from a crop sensor to a full-frame, other than the 6D, the 5D MKII would be a great alternative and the build quality is still strong.
Great review. I bought the T4i earlier this year for my first SLR. I matched it up with the 17-55 2.8 USM to get most out of it for general use. I thought at the time it was the right camera but after a few months and some print work I'm ready to go full frame. Could you or are you planning on doing a review of the 6D? I may do some portrait work but nothing id need a MK for. The only EF lens I have though is the 28-135 3.5 USM. If anyone else has any input that would be great too. Thanks.
For the price, it is kind of a bit... iffy. I get the justification of the Canon 1DX compared to the 5D Mark III, but based on certain videos and actual testing thanks to a friend, I don't really get why you would buy a 5D Mark III over a 5D Mark II now. The price is nearly four times the price difference in our place and a 5D Mark II is still an unbelievably great camera.
Carl do you noticed some improvement on the dinamic range side? i just skip to canon from nikon and im very happy with the mark 3( still learning how the camera works ) but caming from the d800 ( apart from the massive mpx of the nikon one ) i notised a huge difference of the dinamic range .. Im a photography student who spent a lot of time waching videos and reviews for choose the camera suit me better and after a year of ownership of the nikon d800 i decided of skip to canon . It was a huge change .. To me it was difficult change 'cause i used to love the file of the nikon one.. What push me toward The 5 d mark 3 it was the versatility the canon could give me and the high iso capabilities .. im into portrate photography ( fashion ) and street photography so nikon d800 was too specific gear ..About my experience : Both amazing camera but the canon suit me better even if the dinamic range could be problematic ( y the way waching y work i get more convinced that its all about how good the photograher is )
Very good review, however, I do not think that 1 stop improvement is worth twice the price of a 5dmk2 which I can get for U$1700, I'll pocket the difference to go on photo trips with Bruce Percy and I'll switch my CF card with someone on the trip that has the 5Mk3, take a couple of sunset or sunrise pics, print from both cameras poster size and I'll get 10 people to look at the prints and if I say both were taken with the same cameras, they'd believe me. Good review by the way!
After seeing this comparison I'll be keeping my mk2 and spending the extra 1k on something else.
Great tutorial. I've had the Mark 2 for a couple of years now. But i don't think the quality of the Mark 3 warrants the excessive price difference.
PREFER MK2 IMAGES.
#metoo :-) Because that is what I have.
Great comparison. Thorough, concise and objective. I've been thinking about the 5D as my next camera for awhile now. I really appreciate all your videos. Keep up the excellent work!
To me 5diii seemed to produce better colors. However, the legendary 5dii turned out sharper images displaying more details. Proud of my 5dii.
There is a big difference at iso 100 look at the colors especially the table. I like the colors in the mark 2 alot better.
That's why I bought the Canon 5Dii for a backup for my 5D mark iv, because it's bad enough paying more for the mark iv, so I save a bit on the backup.
I love the Mark II... Do you like your IV more?
What is the difference between the two of them.
Thank you for your help.
This is how a camera comparison must be done! Great job...

I am not a Canon shooter, but after playing around with both, I ddnt think the massive price difference was justified.
Great review! The difference in ISO performance is not as big as i expected.

Hi Karl
Once again another informative piece of information. Brilliant. This will encourage me to purchase a 5D Mk3 over the others. Thanks

LOL!!! you killed me with the remark: "...pixel peeping NONSENSE!!!"
But, you are totally right.
Nice comparison by the way.
Those camera would be great for a website for product and people shots.

Exactly! I have the 5mkii and 5d classic, the latter still has fantastic IQ with correct glass

I thought that comes from the lenses!
Verry nice.Thank you Karl !
your videos are very informative. thanks for sharing, man!
Oh well, I guess I made a big mistake. Either way, a 5D MKIII is great. But for someone who wants to jump from a crop sensor to a full-frame, other than the 6D, the 5D MKII would be a great alternative and the build quality is still strong.
Really good review!
Thanks.
Great video
I love my mrk iii, especially the focus system
For the price, it is kind of a bit... iffy.
I get the justification of the Canon 1DX compared to the 5D Mark III, but based on certain videos and actual testing thanks to a friend, I don't really get why you would buy a 5D Mark III over a 5D Mark II now. The price is nearly four times the price difference in our place and a 5D Mark II is still an unbelievably great camera.
Thank you! Karl Taylor
Thank you Karl..it's worthy
