Us Koreans will always appreciate the creativity with how Ferguson used Park Ji-Sung, who was a rather unique player. Bought as a winger but didn't have the greatest first touch or goal-scoring ability, especially compared to Ronaldo/Rooney/Tevez. Yet Ferguson used Park's positional sense and tackling ability to deploy him as a swiss army knife, whether as a fill-in attacker (e.g. CL goal v. Arsenal where Gibbs slipped) or as a midfielder to facilitate that transition from defense to attack (e.g. brilliant title-clinching performance vs. Chelsea in 2011). Of course Park gets credit for his toughness and hustle, but not every manager could've deployed a player like him to such great effect. Cheers to Sir Alex!
Park was amazing in 2008 and beyond. His positioning, passing, finishing was better than nani/ anderson that the only reason I could think of why Fergie didnt use him as much was he was a bit smaller. But he made up for it in his decision making.

Ferguson’s use of his squad was often very clever in his later years. It was very hard to say who Uniteds first 11 was for much of his final few years, as he’d change the side around a lot depending on opponent.
Park was always a player who was saved for big games, against sides who where technically on the same level or at times better in possession than his United side. He knew that Park had amazing stamina levels, and he could trust him in big games to do a job on the opposition, not allowing them any time on the ball.
Park was never the most talented player in his United side, but he was definitely one of the hardest working, and that’s why he had a successful time at United.
Krok Krok if anything it’s the opposite. Yes many people assumed Park Ji Sung was only brought to United to get the Asian market interested in them, but he actually turned out to be a great utility midfielder for United over the years.

This is the same man that had a very inconsistent start to life in the league and he was very close to getting sacked!! Sometimes managers just need time to get it right! 💯

Ferguson had already started switching to a 4-3-3 during 02-03 season, United's best side in 2008 still played 4-4-2 but with Ronaldo given license to get upfront as much as he wanted. United only played 3 central midfielders in tough European ties or against select teams that could keep possession better than them. Ferguson could adapt yes but he always preferred the 4-4-2 because it reflected his football philosophy the most, he never cared about keeping more possession unless it wasn't resulting into scoring more goals.

As you two are saying 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 doesn’t tell the whole story, I think the transition was more subtle because of Ronaldo getting up and other variations...
Queiroz wanted more solidity and preferred 4-5-1 or 4-3-3, Ferguson liked it being flexible and open. 2004-2006 United was still in transition post Beckham. By 2006/2007 the team was so talented that they could play in any system. They only came up short vs AC Milan who loved clogging the middle and draining the tempo out of a game while having Kaka as a game changer. 2008's United had invested more in the summer and the squad was so deep that it didn't really matter what formation they used. Ronaldo could play both sides and do whatever he wanted, Ji Sung Park either flank and showed up in big games, Giggs was transitioning from left wing to central mid, Rooney and Tevez could both play all forward positions, press and run equally and make up for Ronaldo's freedom. Hargreaves could do a shift in all midfield positions, Nani up and coming talent. When you have so many options like Guardiola has today everything becomes much simpler.
the main thing I remember, and I might be misremembering, was Giggs and Ronaldo on the wings, occasionally swapping wings and with CR having a lot more freedom, so i definitely remember more of a 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1, but with transitions and good understanding those can morph into a flat 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 easily
@@mart4414 Yeah I agree, that team didn't really have one set formation as far as I recall. The players were so adaptable they could excel in a number of different systems depending on the situation.
It was NOT exactly 4-3-3 that Ferguson employed. MU were highly aggressive in winning the ball back with every single player tasked by Ferguson to work as a defender whenever they lost possession. In fact, it was common sight to see the front 3 to fall back trying to steal the ball. This is why it was quite famously called the *4-6* formation. Ferguson also credited the physio team for winning the CL because of how successful the physio maintained players' fitness in spite of Ferguson's gruelling tactics.
I don´t think he is the GOAT in tactics but, man, the way he could solve injurie problems game to game, his planning of specific matches and the way he used to change player's positions with a purpose was MENTAL. He could have played a title match with half the team in the hospital and still gave a heavy-goddamned-hard time to the opponent.
I've never seen such a talent for impovisation. That's what I admire of Sir Alex.

At the time of the Ronaldo-Rooney-Tevez axis popularly extolled these days, they were always shown as a 4-4-2 with Ronaldo on the right of Midfield. Would be interested to rewatch how this works out with the heat maps more readily available now.

4 finals is nice and I realise he came close on other occasions such as the infamous 5-3 defeat to Milan in the semis and was twice close to being first to retain the trophy but lost to Real in the Semis 2000 and Barca in the 2009 final when it would have been the time to win and set the record straight (and who knows perhaps if Chelsea made the final he might have won).
His combined record of glory in the latter stages is decent but in the end , Just as Wenger isn't rewarded for his go so and semi final defeats nor is Fergie

People say Fergie wouldn't be able to cope with the new style of play. They forget that he went through adaptation periods and still went on to be successful. If SAF was managing United this year they would be in the title hunt with Liverpool and City.

I think a lot of Wengers success initially was built on him adding attacking flare to the foundations that where already there. You already had a great defence and goalkeeper, and Wenger brought in to his credit some great attackers.
The problem was when that defence started to break up, Wenger was never able to rebuild.
I think Wenger was a great attacking coach in his prime, but he was never the full package, and that’s why he failed to address the obvious weaknesses in his Arsenal side.
And from a United fan, Wenger was a brilliant manager during his time at Arsenal. His Invincibles were one (if not THE) greatest team to grace the prem, and resulted in some legendary matches between United & Arsenal.

Aside from adapting continuously in terms of tactical setup, Sir Alex also adapted in terms of pre-season preparation. For instance, he noticed that unlike the 90s where United could perform in the second half of the league season and win it, Jose's Chelsea would accumulate most of their points in the first half of the season. So when Jose's Chelsea won back to back league titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06 - Sir Alex said that he had the same pre-season preparation from 2003-2005 due to pre-commitments. So he planned ahead and changed that for the summer of 2006, stating that he knew that if he prepared United to get off to a strong start in the league he'd beat Chelsea to the title. United won the league by 9 points and Chelsea had to give United a guard of honor at Stamford Bridge, for which Fergie sent out United's B-team at the team. Classic Fergie.
Unusual request, but would be interested in seeing a video on Middlesbrough's late 90s-2000s golden generation, i.e how such a supposedly insignificant club managed to attarct so many big names (Zenden Mendieta Viduka Juninho etc.), winning the 2004 league cup, making it to 2006 uefa cup final... So, Ferguson tweaked United's game style away from traditional English football practices while most other teams stuck to long balls and lost to United. This afforded United lots of titles. Then every time a new manager would bring in Continental approaches, they would beat United and win titles. Sounds about right
Fergie is my all time fav manager. He was so dedicated to the game. I've seen an interview with him saying: I used to watch the players on the parking lot when they were arriving in the training camp, used to notice how they look, act and feel, from the first step out of their cars, every day... That just shows you how "crazy" he was actually!
Today's game is different, both fans and club owners ain't ready to wait and see the progress, ain't ready to develop a generation of players. One bad season and the manager is sacked. We made huge mistake sacking van Gaal and later Mourinho. You won't get anywhere! Players today can be bigger than the manager, one "unhappy" star player and the team is going down, fast!
If O'shea or Brown were playing under new manager they would'v been useless while under Sir Alex they were amazing. You know why? Cuz he was their father! You need TIME to make a bond like that!

Not entirely accurate, JM was still at Chelsea when Utd were on their way to winning the PL in 06/07 he was sacked in mid Sept, also utd didn't surrender the PL because Arsenal were the holders in 03/04 so it was they who surrendered the title. Utd were in something of a transition integrating and building around CR7 and WR so I thinknif JM hadn't had come to Chelsea, Arsenal would've most likely won the league again.

It's crazy how this guy adapted with time. 26 and a half years, some people say that he hasn't proved it in other leagues like Ancelotti, Pep or Mourinho, but the truth is that it is more difficult to change the team constantly after losing your players and adapting, rather than changing a team.

I remember people saying that once Ronaldo leaves, then United would struggle. Ferguson won 2 more league titles and the other 2 fails was United finishing only 1 point behind Chelsea and lost the title to City on goal difference. Not to mention, United got into the Champions League final again!

One of the most crazy wins of Sir Alex Ferguson that I remembered was his match against Wolfsburg, back when both Vidic and Ferdinand was injured. He employed Fletcher and Carricks as CB while Giggs goes central midfielder and the team still pulls off the 3-1 victory.

1999 and 2008 were his super teams however he still managed to win a lot with inferior teams
The biggest difference between Ferguson and other managers was that he always understood that there aren't a million different levels of talent around the world, he didn't need to buy big all the time he could improve the players he already had and get good performances. That's why his players did so well under him and so poorly under other managers. He had the patience and the motivational skill to extract every last drop of talent out of anyone along with the ruthlessness to get rid of those unwilling to improve. He also knew that a clear style of play and simple instructions were key to developing a team, a cohesive unit all pulling together would always beat a team of superior but wayward individuals.
As an Arsenal fan, I have to pay my tribute to Sir Ferguson. He used to terrorize me with his strategy lol

There used to be a fear when any team was up against them. They oozed class , and earned that respect from the opponents. In establishing all this Sir Alex played the biggest part. Sad to see that today they are nothing like that.

He was the one who promoted Busquets up instead of Yaya, and he also kicked Ronaldinho out and replaced him with academy graduates like Pedro. He bought a reserve center back from Man United and made him a starter in treble winning side.

Tiki taka was made famous of Luis Aragones and after that Vicente del Bosque as Spain managers between 2008-2012.

People wrongly perceived him as tactically rigid but that was never the case. He took united to 3 cl (2007-11) finals while producing fabulous results sometimes even with mediocre players at key position. I think the key factor was the players knew who is the boss. In current situation when player feels himself larger than manager and club and wants tactics modified just to suit his style that creates disharmony and lack of coordination.
Ferguson started playing 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 in Europe before Mourinho came. Usually had Veron and Keane in midfield and Scholes/Giggs behind Ruud.
After Mourinho completely dominated his first 2 seasons. He signed Carrick and eventually changed into what would essentially be a 4-6-0 formation. Basically 4 defenders, 2 deep lying Midfielders out of Carrick/Scholes/Hargreaves.
Then a flexible 4 that would run riot out of Nani/Park/Tevez/Rooney/Giggs/Ronaldo/Saha, then eventually Berbatov.
It was impossible to mark because they had no predefined position they'd be pop up on the left/right upfront, it was frightening.
Ferguson doesn't get the credit he deserves, he never became a dinosaur and was always inventing and re-inventing.
I do enjoy these videos but I think many people remember the Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney trio as a 4-3-3. In the 2007/08 season, Man Utd played 4-4-2 and Ronaldo scored 42 goals, most of which were from right midfield of a 4-4-2 (and sometimes left midfield).
United only played 4-3-3 against tougher opponents, in the Premier League and Champions League.
Ronaldo only played RM in name. Often Rooney would go RM and Ronaldo up front.
@@TheRishijoesanu re watch the Man Utd Premier League games from 2007/08 and tell me that again. Rooney sometimes played left or right wing when we went 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 in the big games in Europe, but not against most opposition. Ronaldo was certainly pushed up in an asymmetrical 4-4-2, but Rooney and Tevez were up top as a two.

Ferguson only played 433 in certain champions league games to match his opponents formation so he wouldnt get outnumbered in midfield. Most of the time he still played 442 with Ronaldo and Giggs keeping swapping sides in wing midfield.
i think i huge reason why SAF didn't win more than two European Cups was a cap on foreign players in the early 90s. I remember we had to leave out Peter and Eric in a few matches in the knockouts.
United played with Carrick-Fletcher in 2010-2011 campaign for 2 weeks and Sir Alex didn't lose a game. That's what a real manager should-could do.

'I think it's ridiculous to assume that SAF wouldn't at least have United challenging for the title this season. I think he's a better manager than Emery or Poch, and that's not just a result of the sample size, he was one of the most extremely adaptable managers of all time. The reason he went out with a bang and Wenger didn't is because one was able to change his team based on the players he had around him, and the other kept trying to put the same system out there.

Time when Manchester United was Manchester United.
After that, another unbelievable example of adaptability was losing the best player in the world of that time (Cristiano Ronaldo) and barely pulling anyone else in the team for next season, and yet winning the title again. Like how dafuq. You can see how Ronaldo's departure to Juventus has dismantled the 3 time consecutive UCL winning Real Madrid but Ferguson won the title with Ronaldo's 42 goal season, and won the title again next season without him (and didn't make any big signings to replace Ronaldo). If that doesn't make him the best manager of all time, I don't know what will! This was done in the most competitive league in the world. Imagine, Chelsea losing hazard without replacement, Liverpool losing Salah without replacement, City losing ageuro, they would be struggling big time to get into the top 2-3, let alone win the league.
