I adore it. I always have, and it has never lost its edge for me. Moreover, it has helped me at different times in my life, first by embodying my rage, and then by liberating once more my capacity for joy.
every time they focus on her poor lonely face, I am overwhelmed with compassion for all who have suffered, who are suffering and who will suffer until we learn a better way to be alive in the world.
It's damn shame that there's no behind-the-scenes feature of this performance. I'd love footage from the rehearsals and interviews with the creators, choreographers and dancers.
The girl was chosen by the Elders a sacrifice to the God of Spring. Interesting (visual) interpretation. Of a curious piece. Certainly among our often returned to.
I was at this performance when the Joffrey pre-debuted it at the University of Iowa. It was incredible and indelible to experience and I'm delighted to have these snippets to enjoy. What a fantastic surprise, I love the Internet.
Thanks for uploading this. I have wanted to see it since I saw the movie, Igor and Chanel. It's incredible---so many moves, and body jarring pounding jumps!
One of the reason's why the Nijinsky provoked a riot in 1913 was that it is borderline ridiculous, a bunch of Apaches stamping...Admittedly Stravinsky seriously underestimated how far ahead of his time his score was. I think it has taken us over half a century to fully come to terms with it. I strongly recommend the Pina Bausch version (also on youtube) from the 1980s.
I think "Les Noces" pushes the boat out even further than this. Much of the music here can be viewed as Impressionist. With "Les Noces" the use of Russian folk modes and the even more radical stripping bare of anything apart from rhythm (according to the diary of Harry Kessler Stravinsky stated in 1912 that he was seeking such a state of affairs) makes it a far more radical and challenging proposal. I actually consider it a far greater work than this.
Yes, I think it can be seen through a mythological stand point that a circle is meant to be unbroken, and she broke it which they see I'm sure as fate intervening. Thats my own interpretation :)
Yeah it makes sense when I think about it. The first time when she almost fell, it caught their attention, but they continued the dance, unsure if it was fate or not. When the same girl stumbled again and this time fell to the ground completely, it was no longer coincidence but the gods choosing their sacrifice.
Watch this while listening to say, Led Zeppelin's "Wearing and Tearing" or "Whole Lotta Love!". So funny. But, this whole ballet and original score as performed is fantastic too.
The bear pelts give it a real nice touch

as I sit on my couch on a street in Baltimore, watching this-the sirens are wailing outside. more victims, somewhere. here. everywhere.

Strange for sure, but very cool to think this might be in the ballpark of what was presented at its premiere.
I'm confused. Was she chosen because she fell out of the line in part 2, or?
Does any one have this one's HD DVD or something to sell?
Everybody do the flop!
