This song speaks to me on such an emotional level. It's like the only way he can give her what she needs and reach out to her is when she carries his weight on her shoulders. She's giving and taking but she can't hold his weight constantly and she's reaching out to something she'll never be able to take a hold of thus the name "falling short". Relationships are about equally giving and growing with each other, not constantly carrying them trying to help or change them in order to get what you need/desire from them. Remember that, I know I need too. Does this relate to anyone else?
Being Mary Jane brought me here. I'm obsessed with finding new artists and different songs. As soon as I heard this song, I knew I had to listen to it again.
Being Mary Jane brought me to tis beautifully sad song. On repeat in my head & my player. "Because you took something away from yourself" is the killer line for me.
LYRICS {Verse 1] x2 One month till February Keep on holdin' on And I know it's short And I know it's short [Pre-Chorus] And it's times like these And it's days like these And it's times like these And it's days like [Chorus] It's been a long time comin' But I'm falling short It's been a long time comin' But I'm falling short [Bridge] x4 Cause you could say This is not too far to carry this [Pre-Chorus] + [Chorus] [Verse 2] x2 Because you took something away from yourself Come back to this road and take your heart to higher self Heart to higher shelf
This video reminds me of something that happened to me. My mom walked in on me in the bathroom and I had cut my wrist. She came, held, and grabbed my arms. When she’s holding the guy I see myself in him. He just looks at his arm as he drifts away, and the girl just looks at him as he drifts away. When she says “you took something away from yourself” I really understood it. I apologize to my mom for having to see that, I apologize to my skin, and to my self. The fight does end.
I had a similar incident but no one found me, the shame still persisted and the aftermath felt by the unavoidable wound kept that embarrassment and shame fully present. You’re a special soul that survived a purgatorial presence that most don’t survive. Use it, take that pain and blossom. The scars a reminder of how far you’ve come. You will never be more special than you are when alive and present. The pains temporary even if it’s consistent, let yourself find joy in the minute details of our existence. Seems like you already have, thank you for sharing this. It means more to people than you could know and I hope it helped you to express, three years past.
Stay strong !! 🙏🏽🙏🏽💙💙 dont ever let whatever or life take over u again!! God bless you and your pain! We are all here for you!! Just come back to this message everyday if you have to be reminded!! If you ever feel like hurting again message on here . We will always listen to this song!!
HBO's "Ballers" sent me here... THIS voice, THIS syncopation, this rhythm is very interesting. I want to know more about you(r) music. luv this.... luv this.. luv this...
I seriously love the mysterious nature of this song. She left us thinking "what the hell is she talking about?" and i LOVE it! I may not know exactly what she is saying but i know that i can relate to this in my own way. Most people that have been through anything can relate to this in their own way whether its drugs or a relationship or a series of trials. For me the song is about confidence and upliftings. When negative things in your life pile up and it seems you have no motivation to carry on, you have to push yourself and when Especially when you take two steps forward and surprisingly take 4 steps back you have to carry on with dead weight (YOU HAVE TO PUSH EVEN HARDER). Falling short of confidence during a period of pain can be such a critical part of life.
She’s talking about how she was failing in college and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t make the grades. Also, she could feel her and her bf coming to an end.
+Sean DiRocco I liked it so mi h that I now bought the album and I really like it even after just one hearing. I like James Blake very much and this is better IMO
I hate the fact that I love this song it reminds me of all the pain I’ve gone through. From finding out to being bipolar to battling an addiction. Thank you
This song is beautiful. So powerful. So captivating. I have interpreted it as maybe someone struggling to get by, or possibly having to support an addict, or resisting relapse themselves. Not too sure. I do love the contemporary allusion to Pieta in the video. Makes it that much more heavy on the heart. So good, Lapsley.
I'm so glad someone else interpreted to addiction, I'm a recovering addict from herion, and have been sober 2 ½ years now, happily engaged and a mother to a beautiful 1 year old. I feel the power of resistance to relapse in this song... and also my ex husband.. who is still a using herion addict and the feeling I had when I got clean and he didn't. And the pain of watching someone you care for also struggle with addiction and you can't save them... Anyways! So glad someone else felt that. 💙

I disagree. I know what the "lyrics" say but those are always wrong. Look at her lips when she's singing and listen carefully . Also, it makes more sense to say "you could save this"
Hooray for the BBC, many times we in the US miss out on some of the astounding talent from around the world, this definitely is one of those amazing treats! EP in two days!
I came across this song back in April 2015. Up at 3 in the morning working on a project for this Italian company and I had to fix a problem involving some of their media. I listened to some of their music lineup for their service and this just came on. Randomly came across this song on the media playlist. Listening to this at 3am is calming.
