Does anyone else notice the fact that discord takes the form of all the mane 6 cutie marks? 3 apples for AJ, balloons for pinkie pie, butterflies for Fluttershy and diamonds for rarity. Discord is even laying on clouds when he confronts rainbow dash.
Discord is a genuinely menacing villain. He has god-like powers, but prefers to defeat you by breaking your spirit with mind games. That is genuinely threatening
This 2 part story was hilarious. Especially a part that I'm surprised you didn't point out: Twilight Sparkle: Necklace! Necklace! Necklace! Necklace! And... big crown thingy! Come on, everypony, let's go! Spike: But Twilight, aren't you missing somepony? Twilight Sparkle: Nope. We've got the liar, the grump, the hoarder, and the brute. That just about covers it. When she said "Big Crown Thingy" I instantly heard a line played in my mind from Juliet Starling of Lollipop Chainsaw. She was fond for using the word "Thingy" and was also voiced by Tara Strong (Who voices Twilight Sparkle)
I thought about it, and Spike would actually make a good Element of Loyalty. No, seriously, think about it. He is extremely faithful to Twilight AND especially Rarity, doing things that most people would not do, especially kids. I mean, he takes letters for Twilight when she could easily write them herself, is one of her voices of reason when reason is lost to her (the others are the Mane 5), and is basically like a little brother to her. Do NOT even get me started on Rarity. Okay, first off, he is basically like her flipping SLAVE, for Luna's sake. He does so much for her, bending over backwards where others would draw the line: 1. Green Isn't Your Color: He is used as a freaking PINCUSSION. 2. Party of One: He takes out her trash, when she could just as easily levitate it out, and isn't even FAZED when Rarity insults him. 3. Secret of My Excess: Spike is so in love with AND faithful to Rarity, he just GIVES HIS FIRE RUBY THAT HE HAS BEEN TUNING FOR MONTHS to her without ANY argument!!! ALSO, RARITY IS THE WHOLE REASON WHY HE REVERTS BACK TO NORMAL. The list would go on forever, but I find these three extremely important to the Loyalty case, concerning Rarity.
The greyness is implied to be only symbolic, not actually visible. Though, Discord should probably be aware of whether his own hexes are actually still working.
I honestly don’t have as much of a problem with the climax, because I think it displays a consistent trait: Discord’s weakness is being caught off-guard. He tends to become overconfident, having been omnipotent for a ridiculously long amount of time, so when something goes wrong with his plans he becomes stunned and can’t react in time. The same thing happened with Tirek, after all.
Before that Discord is like "Ditch your friends!" and Fluttershy is like "Screw your offer". Did anyone notice that Rarity and Fluttershy are the only two to not get sucked in by Discord immediately?
"I don't turn ponies into stone" huh was that discord foreshadowing what happens in season 9 to the trio of villains, since he help Luna and Celestia turn them into stone
valcano I saw it as her greed literally weighing the group down and getting in the way of their goal. Making her carry a giant rock was just to make a visual gag out of it. :D
Dragonshy and The Stare Master already cemented that Fluttershy is quite capable of sticking up for her friends (if not always herself) when threatened, and has developed a good way around having to get physical in the process by using intimidation instead. Complain all you want, but being able to intimidate someone down is a lot nicer than punching them in the face. This confirmed her as the secret badass of the group though. She'll never be a fighter, but being able to countertroll the troll to end all trolls to the point he gets fed up and has to manually corrupt her with his magic, combined with the Stare, makes her probably the best in the series at psychological warfare. Which doesn't break character to me, but reinforces it. She'll always try to find an out that doesn't involve physical confrontation if it can be avoided. Because apparently Fluttershy has read Sun Tzu and understands those lessons not only better than anyone else in Equestria, but better than 99% of all humans as well!

I notice that most people don't often talk about Discord's riddle. "Twists and turns are my master plan, then find the elements back where you began" I feel like when he says "Twists and turns are my master plan," he means that he was going to use mind games on her friends in the labyrinth. "Then find the elements back where began." I think that the "then" part at the beginning means he knew that Twilight would think the labyrinth was the answer, go with her friends, and then after his 'master plan', then she would realize he ment that they were at where they started. I don't know, I guess it's just a think I noticed it and it's not important
Whoever decided to cast John de Lancie as Discord was a genius. Who better to play the creature of chaos that someone who is infamous for creating chaos in Star Trek as Q? I actually feel little echoes of Q in Discord's character....as in this episode. It reminds me of the pilot episode of Next Generation when Q challenges Captain Picard to prove that humanity was good.
About Pinkie.... Um... Wouldn't her hair deflate or something? Her happy and silly personality is what causes the poof, so when she's... stripped of that...? Shouldn't her hair, you know, deflate or something?
Hm, think Rarity had that whole corruption happen because it was about flipping the elements of harmony to disharmony instead. Generosity = greed. Maybe that's why she able to fight the process because while she does like pretty things and jewels she's not selfish. It was kinda like being force manipulated to change like Fluttershy so they act more ooc as he couldn't just mess with their insecurities to make them opposite.
He also plays the infamous Q from Star Trek (both The Next Generation and Voyager). It was actually his performance as Q that inspired the people casting this show to hire John De Lancie for Discord.
This was the first episode I ever watched, and when I saw it it was at where they already had their horns and wings taken away, so I thought it was the same as the older gens. Oh, how I was wrong, luckily
I agree with you I really like the message I'm 21 and I think no matter what age some people have either lost the meaning of friendship or never knew it sometimes people lose themselves in a situation and a real friend would be there to notice it and stay with them through it helping them find them self again not leave because they changed or got lost Also discord was pretty funny with his reaction to the message of friendship though it's a message that anyone at any age could use
The reason Rarity became greedy was because her element would still work, and she wouldn't be a jerk. If she was still generous, Twilight would have a friend and wouldn't become corrupted.

Twilight sends a letter every week (lesson zero) and there were nine episodes if you count winter wrap up, but not the first two-parter. That means we saw about a quater of potential 'episodes'. So, yes. They are not showing us everything. Not to mention ep 13 is Fall weather friends, at least half a year later, and there is one episode in between - we missed a ton of letters.
The extra scrolls are from season 3 and a half when you buy all of the mlp mercy on iTunes all episodes etc. you get about 50 unfinished / unaired episodes
I always saw the elements not working the first time as more the fact that Rarity, Pinkie, FS and AJ no longer reflecting the element they represented. I always see Tiara program searching for Friendship... Friendship found and for the other search for element............. element not found
There's a lot to say about this one... Part 1 : 10/10. Sets up a great villain in Discord (a character who I like a lot as a villain but really don't like when he's "reformed" more on that in later reviews ) the entire episode sets up the conflict (Discord's return & missing elements ) while raising the stakes throughout it ( Discord manipulating the mane 6 one by one) and the pacing is great. Part 2: 9/10 The character's alternate personalities along with Discord's chaos in Ponyville was fun. Watching Twilight give up and then regain faith through the lessons she learn about friendship was a great moment and so was reforming the mane 6 & Discord's defeat. Twilight's magic reforming the other ponies because 'main character armor' is the only big drawback for me, and that's just my personal nitpick. An awesome start to Season 2.
TheMysteriousMrEnter I think i know what that spell twi used was. imagine memories like gems in a box. when the box is closed, the person has amnesia. otherwise it's normal state. each memory is a gem in a pile in the box. when a gem is out of the box, the memory is brought up. sometimes random gems fall out of the box, bringing that memory up. you know when you suddenly remember something random you did a long time ago? with no reason for the memory to be brought up? yeah like that. the spell twi used on AJ and the rest is like picking up some gems from the box and taking them out and bringing up the memory. twi made AJ remember all she did with her friends to remind her how great friendship is. like what the letters did to twi. get it?
I love this 2-Parter. It's one of my favorite season openers of the show. But let's see what I think of each episode. Return of Harmony Part 1: I really love the episode. The weird chaos is pretty funny, Discord is, well he's my favorite villian of the show and one of my favorite MLP characters so he helps make this 2 Parter, the intensity and stakes rise, the animation truly, stands out and more. I like the scenes that involves Discord making most of the Mane Six the opposite of their elements. Don't have any issues with this part. I love it. 5/5 Stars Gold Part 2: The second episode is just as amazing as the first. Seeing Discord's version of Ponyville is not only funny, but also weird in the best ways possible. The episode knows how to balance drama and comedy. I like how they recap all of the previous season. The only issue is that they don't explain how the Mane Six got cured with Twilight's crown. Also, the climax did feel anticlimactic. Other than that, I love this episode too. 5/5 Stars Gold Overall, even to this day, besides the S4 premiere, this is the best season premiere of the show to date. 10/10 Stars or 5/5 Stars Gold I'm gonna also see how we are doing in the season overall so far within each review so when I get to the Season 2 Overview, I know what I'd give this season and compare it to the previous season. So Far: 10/130
Discord probably didn't try to escape because it caught him off guard, you can freeze up when you're shocked at something, he probably had that happen and he didn't think of escape, or maybe he knew there was nothing he could do hense why he didn't try to escape, I mean he has encountered the elements before sooo...
"A comforting lie is better than a painful truth." I have one thing to counter that. Even if you tell a lie that's easy to take, after a while, the truth will come out, and the lie suddenly becomes less comforting. Therefore, it will just turn into a painful truth anyway. So, what's the point?
"And she turns to Greed." Ha. RariGreed. Now there's something I'd be interested to see. "Wait, why am I in the body of a beautiful pony...and why the hell do I like it?" Poor guy.
The spell seemed pretty obvious to me, Twilight remembered what her friends mean to her by being reminded of the times they have spent together, so she uses some sort of forced flashback spell to remind them of the great times that have shaped their friendships into what they are.
Just tossing this out here, but maybe Twilight sends MORE than one letter per episode, we just don't see them for time issues? Like the things she learns per episode wouldn't fit on a single letter and there's more to her studies than just a moral.
Am I the only one who thought Discord was Chaotic Neutral instead of Chaotic Evil here? He only went after the Mane 6, and only under a twisted sense of self-preservation. Otherwise, he was pretty much as anarchic as Lucifer from SMT. Certainly dangerous and needed to be stopped, but I'm not sure I'd be able to label Discord as actually evil.
I really hate when Discord just taps Fluttershy to corrupt her, all the others became corrupt because of flaws in their personality which can make way for character development. That scene just told us that Fluttershy is very accepting of her timidness and that Discord has no flaws in her personality to exploit, it really annoys me.
Well, it somewhat helped to prove Fluttershy's competence for "Keep Calm and Flutter On". Discord just wasn't able to mess with Fluttershy like he could with the others. One of Discord's best ways to troll is with sarcasm and manipulation. Fluttershy being accepting of what she was when he was trying to mess with her head made it impossible to manipulate her with his usual method, thus he had to go with the more direct approach. It still worked, but it was simply much less fun for him.
Honestly, my immediate impression was that the only reason tapping her head worked is *because Fluttershy is a pushover.* _That_ is her personality flaw. Her pushover nature left her open for corruption.
Honestly I've seen 2 revies of this episode and I think it might make me into a Brony. Honestly its a very well written story with a cool villain (played by an awesome actor) kids shows don't have to suck. (Saban Entertainment I am looking your direction).

Thing about Twilight reverting her friends, it's contradictory to what was shown in part 1, where Twilight's magic had no effect on Discord's chaotic magic. I also don't like the rushed climax, and the whole two-parter made me feel really sad... But damn if this wasn't a great opener for season 2!
Discord is Mephisto Pheles like get it? Blue Exorcist's Mephisto. They are both insane yet geniuses both have more power than they let on. both are unstoppable it's so cool.
cloudfanlp Yeah I guess that could be possible as Discord has been seen tearing inter-dimensional rifts in space and time so it is possible. But i have to go with Discord as he can do anything he wants at any point in time. If he says he wants you dead he can play with you or just flat out kill you. But as it's MLP there would be no REAL death but then again he is shown to cause the physically impossible to any pony.

My theory about the letters is that Twilight doesn't just send letters about the moral of the episode, but she's Celestia's pen pal or something.
Maybe the letters go in depth regarding the events meaning they need multiple scrolls, and we only hear/see a short version??
That's a good idea. Being Twilight, I wouldn't be surprised if she took a ton of scrolls to describe what happened in one day.

Twilight's magic reforming the other ponies because 'main character armor' is the only big drawback for me, and that's just my personal nitpick. An awesome start to Season 2.
Every time I see Discord doing the running man, I burst out in laughter.
The balloons don't scare me, but they burn my eyes the way "The Splinter" burns Mr. Enter's eyes.

I love Q. He's awesome, & it's great that, like Q, Discord is omnipotent, meaning he's basically god, & can do anything. Discord = Op, plz nerf.

TheMysteriousMrEnter I think i know what that spell twi used was. imagine memories like gems in a box. when the box is closed, the person has amnesia. otherwise it's normal state. each memory is a gem in a pile in the box. when a gem is out of the box, the memory is brought up. sometimes random gems fall out of the box, bringing that memory up. you know when you suddenly remember something random you did a long time ago? with no reason for the memory to be brought up? yeah like that. the spell twi used on AJ and the rest is like picking up some gems from the box and taking them out and bringing up the memory. twi made AJ remember all she did with her friends to remind her how great friendship is. like what the letters did to twi. get it?
i kinda like the idea of Fluttershy being a closet Dominatrix. :3
I love this 2-Parter. It's one of my favorite season openers of the show. But let's see what I think of each episode.
Return of Harmony Part 1: I really love the episode. The weird chaos is pretty funny, Discord is, well he's my favorite villian of the show and one of my favorite MLP characters so he helps make this 2 Parter, the intensity and stakes rise, the animation truly, stands out and more. I like the scenes that involves Discord making most of the Mane Six the opposite of their elements. Don't have any issues with this part. I love it.

Part 2: The second episode is just as amazing as the first. Seeing Discord's version of Ponyville is not only funny, but also weird in the best ways possible. The episode knows how to balance drama and comedy. I like how they recap all of the previous season. The only issue is that they don't explain how the Mane Six got cured with Twilight's crown. Also, the climax did feel anticlimactic.
Other than that, I love this episode too.

Discord probably didn't try to escape because it caught him off guard, you can freeze up when you're shocked at something, he probably had that happen and he didn't think of escape, or maybe he knew there was nothing he could do hense why he didn't try to escape, I mean he has encountered the elements before sooo...

I really liked season 1 and 2 of the show, reminded me a lot of Cartoon Network shows I use to watch growing up.

The spell seemed pretty obvious to me, Twilight remembered what her friends mean to her by being reminded of the times they have spent together, so she uses some sort of forced flashback spell to remind them of the great times that have shaped their friendships into what they are.
That quote at the beginning was funny because it mentioned glue.

Just tossing this out here, but maybe Twilight sends MORE than one letter per episode, we just don't see them for time issues? Like the things she learns per episode wouldn't fit on a single letter and there's more to her studies than just a moral.
Am I the only one who thought Discord was Chaotic Neutral instead of Chaotic Evil here? He only went after the Mane 6, and only under a twisted sense of self-preservation. Otherwise, he was pretty much as anarchic as Lucifer from SMT. Certainly dangerous and needed to be stopped, but I'm not sure I'd be able to label Discord as actually evil.

This is the best episode of them all. I don't even need to get past S3 to know.
I really hate when Discord just taps Fluttershy to corrupt her, all the others became corrupt because of flaws in their personality which can make way for character development. That scene just told us that Fluttershy is very accepting of her timidness and that Discord has no flaws in her personality to exploit, it really annoys me.
Well, it somewhat helped to prove Fluttershy's competence for "Keep Calm and Flutter On". Discord just wasn't able to mess with Fluttershy like he could with the others. One of Discord's best ways to troll is with sarcasm and manipulation. Fluttershy being accepting of what she was when he was trying to mess with her head made it impossible to manipulate her with his usual method, thus he had to go with the more direct approach. It still worked, but it was simply much less fun for him.
It's because Fluttershy is just that perfect.
Honestly, my immediate impression was that the only reason tapping her head worked is *because Fluttershy is a pushover.* _That_ is her personality flaw. Her pushover nature left her open for corruption.

Honestly I've seen 2 revies of this episode and I think it might make me into a Brony. Honestly its a very well written story with a cool villain (played by an awesome actor) kids shows don't have to suck. (Saban Entertainment I am looking your direction).

My favorite characters in this episode are the trio of ballet bison that dance through the second half every now and then.
Thing about Twilight reverting her friends, it's contradictory to what was shown in part 1, where Twilight's magic had no effect on Discord's chaotic magic. I also don't like the rushed climax, and the whole two-parter made me feel really sad... But damn if this wasn't a great opener for season 2!
Discord is Mephisto Pheles like get it? Blue Exorcist's Mephisto. They are both insane yet geniuses both have more power than they let on. both are unstoppable it's so cool.

cloudfanlp Yeah I guess that could be possible as Discord has been seen tearing inter-dimensional rifts in space and time so it is possible. But i have to go with Discord as he can do anything he wants at any point in time. If he says he wants you dead he can play with you or just flat out kill you. But as it's MLP there would be no REAL death but then again he is shown to cause the physically impossible to any pony.

I knew Discord's voice because I grew up watching Star Trek: TNG. Only reason I started watching the show.
The opener for season 2 is great but one thing it miss out is characters development. Which is why I wish this is 3 part.
If you're still going out of a possible total of 130 and counting a two parter as one episode (despite counting the previous one separately) then shoudn't you double its score in the total?
