- How to calibrate the stepper motors for X & Y Axis on RuiDa Controllers using RD Works.
Create a square in RD Works 100x100mm
Cut from a piece of material using the cut settings for that material.
Now measure the X & Y axis.
Follow Directions in Video on how to change the Graph length and the actual measured length to calibrate your stepper motors.
Also shown is how to do this method on a rotary attachment using masking tape to measure each axis.

This video has saved me so much time and headaches for a new CO2 machine builder. Am grateful
Matt, keep doing what you're doing. Very helpful stuff. You're shortening the learning curve for all of us Chinese laser owners.
Thanks Dave
Hi Matt. I tend not to write comments. However, i'd like to say thank you for this series of videos. They a so helpful .
You're very welcome! - Thanks
Hello Matthew, you are a darling.
Your video really save the day for me .
Thanks a million you are my super hero.
Cheers!
Hi Matt. I appreciate all your videos. Thank you.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback
@@MWLaser Do you have any videos of upgrading the stepper motors to a hybrid closed servo?
Thank You! I've been searching for this info for a while. This did EXACTLY what I needed!
Glad it helped!
Thanks, Matt, this was very interesting, I will make a point of looking at the rest videos, I have had my 1290 80 watts, upgraded to 130 watts, Redsail Laser from 2013, and apart from a few friends who help me, we are all in the dark, ( hard to teach old dogs new tricks ) Australia.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers
Thanks Matt, I do find your explanations / tutorials very helpful. I have a Chinese Laser with the Ruida controller and using Lightburn. Great job !!
Thanks - Maybe it Time for Me to Improve on this Video
We definitely appreciate your videos. I have a loaded question for you! Our machine has lost its parameters ever since using the rotary, I try to load what had been the machine before and it seems to make no difference. It jams into the corner and even then it is now engraving things 2x the size they had been before and backwards! If you could help us out in any way we would greatly appreciate it.
How this error occurs .This was ok yesterday. y axis 105 instead of 100. I rectified this problem after watching this video. Thank you. Pls explain how this error happens.
Currently fixing this on my laser. In Lightburn, is this currently under the "machine settings" found under the "edit tab," and then I click on the "calibrate axis" on the selections?
Had simmilar problem when cutting on 1200x900mm laser. It was calibrated with 100mm square, but when parts were longer like 1m or more, there was 0,9% of error. All parts were too big. Is it better to cut like square or rectange with size of max working area. At the moment I’m working on diy laser with RDC6432G controller with working area 650x450mm ( my goal is to use 600x400mm plywood on it).
Hope to see more new videos on this channel about ruida and laser machines. So many great informations here.
Best regards from Slovenia.
the larger the calibration square cut the more accurate.
Hi, i have Co2 laser with RD works . My problem is insted of 48in my x axis cut only 47in and y axis 35in only. How can i change it 48x36in
Thanks for the detailed explaination Matt. everything is hooked up and ready for testing. The only thing is....i cant get the limit switch working?? Do i need to configure in the controller to activate them once they'er wired up? Keep up the good work and thanks again
I was cutting today and the power went out. I was able to start over from original position but that meant the laser had to go over previously cut. Is there a way to restart it at a certain point? I'm using RDC6445G
Is there a way to calibrate the Z axis? Thanks
Good evening, I have a ruidardc6445g and I need to use 2 motors on the Y, for that I will use two different drivers, I would like to know if it is possible to connect them to the same Y port of the controller so that they are synchronized. it would be possible? Or could you tell me what would be the best way? sorry for my english lol
I'm reworking a Golden Laser to a RuiDa 6445G, how do I set it up for a 1300 x700
Hi need help
How can we resume programe after power cut at the place of power cut on RDC6445G
What to do if the co2 laser machine does not move on x or y
You are amazing.. thank you so much ..
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback
Hi Matt, thank you for your videos, i have this issue, I have a problem. I calibrate 100x100mm square, but when u cut 500x500mm i measure 503mm, what can i do so i can have good accurancy any measure, i use rd works and 6445G controler and is a 1600x1000mm my working area. Thank you for your help
For higher accuracy Perform calibration at 500mm rather than 100mm
How to know and fill the step length with ruida 6445 offline without pc or rdwork
Please help me and thanks
Sir i want to known why usb connection come error some of time..
Hi Matt, Please can you confirm accuracy and repeatability that you get and expect on your machines. Say you cut 50 20x20mm squares as an example in different areas of your table. Thank you Much appreciated!
Accuracy within +/-0.01mm on a recent test - emailed you more detail. Cheers Matt
Thank you Matt, really appreciated!
Great info, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, I tried to cut a square 400x400. The measurement on all sides are 400, but it was not a true square with four 90 degree angle on all four corners. How do I fix this? Is this something I can do with the calibration on the controller or I have to work on the gantry? Thank you.
This indicates that the gantry may be out of square. You will need to adjust by loosening the Y axis shaft or belts, get it square and then retighten. After doing this you will need to reperform mirror alignment. Note: all machines have different methods of adjusting the gantry.
Hello, thank you very much for the explanation. I have a question, what could be happening if the calibration does not work with my machine, the failures in the cutting precision are always variable, they fluctuate between 1 and 2 mm of failure and calibrating it does not work.
this variation could be attributed to loose belts or "slop" in the axis. Also I recommend measuring accurately when calibrating with a digital caliper.
Hello,...
can you also tell me how to solve this:
When I start the laser, the display shows x: 10,000
y: 10,000.
and not zero zero on x and y axis
so my laser goes the wrong way when starting up and then runs off the bed
If you know, can you make a film of this and post it on the net?
in other words, HOW do I reset Y and Y axis to zero?
thanks yo saved my day
Glad I could help
what about the kerf on the laser. the laser is cutting in the middle on the line. I also see that if you get perfect cut on mdf it will be different on acrylic. due to the acrylic melts more and give you a bigger kerf. i know i can set positive and negative kerf to get lightburn to cut outside the line or inside. but its really tricks with my mind when calibrating like you do on the video. on cnc its easier because there you choose inside or outside cut and you know your bit size.
I have plan to do video for this in next few months. For calibration most common mode is to calibrate for the size of the cut out piece not including the kerf. However you prefer to calibrate for your machine, will depend upon your own preferences.
@@MWLaser thanks for answering, the best way i have found is to engrave squares then measure from center to center. when jt come to kerf my method is to make a cut profile for the inside cuts and one for the outside cuts. now my machine has perfect measurements on inside cuts and outside cuts.
Merci pour vos tutos ! pouvez vous m indiquer le réglage pour que le laser reste a sa place a la fin du travail ? Merci ................
RDWORKS - User Tab (Right hand side of screen) Press READ, then select OTHER - Then you can change Return Parameter (Return Position) to No Return
When changed press WRITE to save the setting
Thank you so much. Your video really helped me. But after doing the calibration I don't know what mistake I did that machine running crazy....
Did you backup your vendor settings before calibration? if you require assistance email matt@mwlaser.com.au
Hi, What do you have your micro stepping set to on your motor controllers. At the moment i have mine set to max but cant get above 100mm per second on both x and y. Cheers Dave.
micro step on my drivers is set to 5000
@@MWLaser Thanks
Hi Matt.
Thanks again for your helpful video.
After struggling too much I could do the calibration, with cutting I don't have any problem but while engraving the laser head moves far from the engraving area from both sides on X. Which is the parameter setting for fixing this issue?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Try looking at your Acceleration settings for the X Axis

@@MWLaser Thank you so much, I did all you said but still the X travel too much far from my engraving area, whereas for cutting it is ok, the only problem is only for engraving. I am so upset....
Nice.
system reseting rdc-v8.01.65 HMI- v4.50.02 sir how problem solved error after reset
hi thank you for information i have a Question please
if i upgrade my Laser from 30 W to 100 W what Vendor Tools in Laser TAB i need to Configure Because after upgrading my Machine to 100W it still work like 30W Laser
and Thank you Teacher :)
What components did you upgrade? LaserTube? PSU?
What Controller are you using?
Email matt@mwlaser.com.au
If I do the calibration on Rd works, and then I want too use lightburn, would the calibration still work? Or is only good while using rd works ?
Once calibration complete it is saved to controller, so it is accurate for any software you then use.
Matts Workshop thanks! Keep up with the videos!
How do you do this with lightburn?
In LightBurn, using the Edit Menu - Select Machine Settings - Then use the Calibrate Axis Option.
I have a problem when I click on read I get the notice of (no device connected), where should it connect? on Mi PC?? - My cnc does not have wifi or will I have to put a network cable from my pc to the internal panel of the cnc? please help

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I was able to solve the problem, thank you for your response
Can you do this in lightburn or is it only in RD works
You can view and edit these calibration settings in LightBurn, But there is not the option to enter graph length and measured length. It is much easier to do these calibrations in RD Works.
May Machine lock please solve this problem
I have a problem. I calibrate 100x100mm square, but when u cut 500x500mm i measure 502mm.

My laser Y is of by aprox 10% but adjusting the step length doesn’t change anything. It used to work but now it like the Y step length is locked in the controller. Any suggestions ?
What type of controller are you using?
It’s def a RuiDa. Not sure how to identify the model. I’ll see if I can get more info.
@@freakshowcustoms9094 Follow up by shooting me an email - address in video description. Cheers Matt
My problem is identical to your old problem. Can you tell me what you did to fix it? My y-axis is off by 5%, but no matter how I adjust the step-length in the vendor tools it just keeps doing the same thing. I did remember to click “write “. I know it’s been a few years for you, but I would love to know.
@@yortwatson8244 It turned out to be the controller board.
how to unlock ruida card
contact your manufacturer.
When i cut 100 x 100mm its ok. But cutting above 1000 or more size is cuming different
Calibrate with a larger size square, the larger the calibration cut the more accurate you can make it
Good day What happened if there is an error CRASH ALARM displayed on the screen and the laser head doesnt go down. It move sideways and upwards but it doesnt go down.
