- Taliban officials are celebrating in Kabul three years since they seized control of Afghanistan.
Parades and gatherings were held across the country.
But on the third anniversary, people face a faltering economy and a crackdown on basic freedoms.
Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid reports.

The country was run by warlords and drug mafias, who stole billions of dollars of American and European taxpayers' money. The president was powerless to remove provincial premiers because the army was aligned with the warlords. Women were harassed and threatened by young men, and a young woman was burned to death just a kilometer from the presidential palace. While a few individuals grew richer from drug money and stolen government funds, over 80% of the population lived below the poverty line. The police and army were directly involved with local criminal gangs and participated in kidnapping and rape. The army also set up checkpoints along major highways, extorting money from bus passengers.
