The XM5 just works. It's simple in design, not too expensive and made of practical materials that I do not need to baby when travelling. Practical, light and comfortable. And the sound - just minor tweaks on the app and it's really enjoyable.
I like the audible feedback when you touch it just right. This feature is missing from so many models I’ve had, even supermodels. And “you have to make it smaller to get it to fit”. That’s so hard (in my case). Stretching out the container or even just partial insertion are more plausible, TBH.
Great review. Although the audio was not perfect, I think it does give you an idea of how compressed the audio is. Xm5s really do sound nice from your samples.
Does the XM-5's touch controls pass the freezer test on function ? To my ears the Sony's XM-5's have better ANC then Air Pods. Great review guys as always and looking forward to comparison to the other top contenders.
I own the WH1000 XM4 / XM5 and WF1000XM4. Still believe that the best ANC of the three are the WF; that think is superduperhigh tier ANC. Love all of them.

I listen to all genres of music, and love a spatial/dynamic sound. I haven't had headphones in years, and miss when listening to music was more of an experience with them. Will effect the buy tomorrow. 120 bucks cheaper than MX5, and it only loses in noise cancelling (by a thread, pretty much "God Tier" to "Top Tier") and EQ ap options. Got twice as much battery and there's no comparison on the sound clarity/quality. Bro, it will come down to which sound you likebetter. I suggest checking the DRHME review comparing the Momentum 4 against MC5 and Bose NC 700. They gpt very distinctive sound samples for diferent genres.

Let's face it, the call quality of xm3 and xm4 was disastrous. Do you plan to make a direct comparison with Bose 700 (especially on call quality, with low noise and high noise environment)? @@DHRME On a side note, I could try very quickly one XM5 yesterday (i could not really test in deep). While i was extremely pleased with call quality, I was very, very, very disappointed by the ANC. It looks like the "auto ANC" is simply not able to cope with sudden changes, and one cannot disable it (in other words, the headphone chooses the ANC level without asking me, while I would like to have it at its max setting all the time). Did you also had this issue?
WOW microphones are great ! and also the sound for me are the best in this comparation with binaural microphone. they are pretty close to the original sound (in the sample rock you can guess better than the other genres) ! maybe in ANC XM4 wins...
I love how you do the sound samples. Most reviewers play one song and cycle different headphones for less than 15 seconds each. Of course that will be inaccurate because different headphone was used for different part of the song.

I was waiting for this video for a long time guys, good job! Not related to this video but an idea for a future one maybe :) The nc 700 are now shipping with firmware 2.0.4, not available for older units. Any information on the differences between 2.0.4 on the new units and 1.8.2 in the old ones?
I just had bose replace my out of warranty blue pair with a brand new black pair with additional year warranty When got had to do update to 1.8.2 to introduce equalizer. Said manufacture date was last quarter of 2020.
@@stephenknight6562 Only units from late 2021 and 2022 come with 2.0.4. My guess is Bose changed something in the hardware (bluetooth version?) which prevents older units from receiving the newest firmware - my old unit was stuck at 1.8.2, the new one I got from amazon recently has 2.0.4.

Sound is really subjective. The XM5 sounds AMAZING to my ears. Maybe because I don't like bright sounding profile. Too much treble hurts my ears and is so fatiguing. Bass on the XM5 isn't muddy for me. This is coming from Marshall Mode wired in-ear.
My thoughts and opinion exactly! I found myself not that fond of natural sounding as well. XM5 sounds just how I like either, even knowing that it's kind considered a wrong pick from an "Audiophile perspective".

Like a song White Walls or Swimming to the Moon(On TH-cam listen to the "remastered" versions)? I am more of an old-school HD600 prog-metal head. When they worked, the 1more evos where pretty good for the price. My Z5s are good enough and punchy but sound a bit congested and not fast enough on the low end and the sound stage could be better.
Was curious what devices you tested these with? I think in the past you said that you tried to you both a Samsung Galaxy and an iphone that had been released in the past year.
Regarding the twist test - it's not extremely exaggerated. It was supposed to be creak free, they even used the term "noiseless design". Well, mine creak pretty loud when moving earcups back and forth. They also occasionally make some clicking/popping sounds while walking. Do all XM5's do this? I sold my XM3's mostly because of that 🤦♂

I've got xm5 earbuds and they trigger false touch positives all the time when it's windy and damp outside. Anything on this? I just got the normal xm5 headphones. Hope they are less sensetive

Quite alot of people on reddit have mentioned that their ANC on their Xm5 is extremely poor because of the fact that they cant adjust the level of noise cancellation. Do you have any problems with noise cancellation not working well?
THIS REVIEW'S MAJOR OVERSIGHT. You criticize the XM5 because they don't fold and have a larger case. The Achilles heel of my XM4 is the tiny rattling and creaking noise the hinges make when I walk and jog. It's a deal breaker. I'm thrilled Sony intentionally eliminated the hinges to create a "Noiseless Design". If the case is larger to accommodate this improvement, so be it. The fact that they're lighter, have tighter bass and vastly improved call quality, makes the XM5 a slam dunk.

@@DHRME I updated to latest firmware 1.1.3 right out of the box and it was the same, then factory reset didnt help either. Also have problems with adjusting volume it interrupts with music alot like a bug. Probably going back to XM4

Latest update - the newly launched firmware fixed the one gripe we have - no LDAC when on multi-connectivity. It now supports LDAC when connected to 2 devices!
Given that it automatically adjusts the ANC based on sound, does it work quickly so that sudden unexpected sounds are blocked as well? or does it take a while to activate?
So where between normal and bright seems to be my happy zone. I love my XM5s. I have owned the AirPods Max and the XM4s and the XM5s are my pick by a long shot.
@@DHRME I am a hobbiest audiophile at best, but what made the difference for me was #1- an obvious upgrade in the capability of the driver, #2- build quality is a definite upgrade over the XM4s, #3-they fixed the touch controls. Do you want to know my custom tuning in the app…?
After using a week my right side is tight but my left side ear joint becomes very loose..it doesn't cause me any comfort issue.. but it's very loose and turns just with gravity but my right side is very still.. is it normal?

If you’re thinking of buying the XM5 based on this review, consider my comment: You guys must have beautifully rounded/smooth tops of your skulls, because you didn’t mention the narrower (compared to the XM4) headband which does not distribute the weight of the cans very well at all. People like me who have a distinct ridge running perpendicular to the headband are going to have a tough time with this set. I can only last about 20 min in them. I considered returning them, but I’m happy to say that after trying 4 3rd party replacement pads, I’ve found one that lets me wear the XM5 indefinitely, and that was only after a trip to the craft store for an additional high density foam insert. So yeah, the narrower headband might be a dealbreaker for you if you’ve experienced this in the past.

Nope. The ambient slider and ANC is the same thing

I use the PowerAmp EQ that. It sets the headphone according to AutoEQ to target the Harman curve, which is great.
can you share your eq ?
Bought XM5 headphones yesterday and automatic NC is pain in the ass...deffinetly returning them!!

If you’re thinking of buying the XM5 based on this review, consider my comment:
You guys must have beautifully rounded/smooth tops of your skulls, because you didn’t mention the narrower (compared to the XM4) headband which does not distribute the weight of the cans very well at all. People like me who have a distinct ridge running perpendicular to the headband are going to have a tough time with this set. I can only last about 20 min in them. I considered returning them, but I’m happy to say that after trying 4 3rd party replacement pads, I’ve found one that lets me wear the XM5 indefinitely, and that was only after a trip to the craft store for an additional high density foam insert. So yeah, the narrower headband might be a dealbreaker for you if you’ve experienced this in the past.
