As an indigenous person of mixed heritage living in outback South Australia, the 2017 ad is my favourite as it brings all Aussies together. Personally, I don't care when we have the holiday ... I just want to see us all as one... had enough of fighting and bullying over so many years. Now all seems so much better. Perhaps still got a way to go but I am tired of years of it and appreciate how far we have come.
My dad is an Aussie, my mother is French arriving 1950... very few French immigrated to Australia prior to 2000. Australia Day or Invasion Day commemorated Arthur Phillip colonising on Jan 26 1788 beating La Perouse, a French navigator by ONE DAY.

Remember watching a show called Australian story. On one episode they had an American aircraft gunner who settled in Australia after the war with his Australian wife. He said one day his father inlaw asked him how things were at his new job? The American said that he doesn't think he is liked because they are always taking the piss out of him.(paraphrasing) He said his father inlaw smiled and said Don't worry they like you. If they didn't they wouldn't have anything to do with you.

Mary, The crown princess of Denmark (wife of the next king) is an Aussie. That was her being airlifted out of the palace balcony in Copenhagen.
2016 is my fave. The lady in Warsaw is Lee Lin Chin. She was a newsreader and her backstory was probably that she was working as a foreign correspondent at the time. It also featured cricketer Mitchell Johnson and a double for Princess Mary of Denmark. She’s from Tassie!
Lee Lin Chin (the lady in Warsaw in the 2016 ad) had been an Australian news correspondent for decades on SBS.
She's the people's Prime Chinister of Australia.

In my opinion the Sam Kekovich ads are the best, they were the original Aussie Day lamb ads
The historical characters being invited to the BBQ by Richie Benaut, a cricketer and possibly the best cricket commentator in the world, were Captain Cook, explorers Burke and Wills, the outlaw Ned Kelly, and cricketer Don Bradman, (who was presumably still batting as he ended his career with a test average of 99.94. The contemporary figures I didn't recognise.
You had Sam Kekovich, AFL commentator and previous Lamb adds, Ita Buttrose - women's magazine guru, The bloke he said nope to was Billy Birmingham who made a career as a comedian sending up cricket commentators of whom Richie Benaut was his most favoured target.

The old Aussie saying was Poms drink warm beer and eat cold pies. My old man liked his pies cold, whenever he was eating one we'd all call him a bloody pom lol.
The bloke changing the portraits in the background was a dig at the revolving door of prime ministers
The best part was the piece of paper the USA president held that reminded him who the current prime minister of Australia was. Any other country it would seem insulting, but it's a fair point in Australia politics. The last Prime Minister of Australia to serve out their full term was John Howard in 2006/2007.
The 2016 ad is bad look now since the government has left Aussies stranded in other countries not letting them home during the pandemic.
I lost it in the "Operation Boomerang" one where they just rappelled down and grabbed Princess Mary from "Definitely not Copenhagen."

That is what Australia Day is all about. And why it is celebrated. Everyone's welcome to this great multicultural country to live with peace and freedom together.
Calling it Invasion day, only divides people. We must not dwell on the evil past. We cannot change history. We must look at how much better as people we have become since then.
Now helping the Aboriginals more than ever. The best we can.
Dwelling on the past only brings hate and division. There is bad history everywhere. We must always look forward and learn from history.
We remember, learn, move on improve, but not dwell.

The ad from 2015 with Richie Benaud was the best one. This was made just before he died (RIP)

I really like 2016: it shows how Aussies are all around the world being successful doing different things but when it comes to celebrating being australian we all come together.
I loved ALL of them! Especially the " how long have you been here?" I sold my TV 40 years ago...these type of ads are the only thing I've missed. ;P

There are so many aussies in the ad’s , news readers , etc that you pull only know who they are if you lived in Australia, makes the ads even funnier
Re. The French;- I love their food & their women. Re. Aussie inclusiveness;- the silent majority feel this way, it's the empty vessels that make the most noise about immigration.
If you are in need of help whilst overseas, you can always count on Aussies & Kiwis to give you a hand. Even you Poms are usually pretty good. Don't ask Yanks or Italians though...

2017 was to show the multicultures of Australia, for the most part. Lol there was alot of big names in it too. It's also my favourite Lamb ad. Lol
2019, we had alot of different PM's during this time. Lol also one of my favourites. (They showed mainly the ocean part) lol xD

I love the Australia Day lamb ads. I had never seen the political one before and I'm an Aussie. Don't know if it ever went to air. There are a lot of indigenous Australians who don't talk about invasion. I think they've accepted what became the inevitable and prefer to just get on with life. The rest of us immigrants are happy to be one big happy family and you can see that whenever there are disasters (flood, drought, bushfires, cyclones, coronavirus, etc). Everyone pitches in to help. To give you an illustration of how we're all Aussies once you've settled here, my younger daughter's bridesmaid came originally from the Punjab and when someone asked her where she came from she named a local Sydney suburb. Someone else suggested you watch the Mum's cooking a lamb roast ad - I agree.

One of my favourite Australia day ads was the one with a parody of barbie girl (the song) i found it hilarious.

2015: yes, these are famous people: Capt Cook, Richie Benaud (former Aussie test captain, cricket commentator, now deceased), Burke and Wills (famous 19th century explorers who died trying to cross the continent, south to north), Ned Kelly (bushranger who wore armour, was captured and hanged), Ita Buttrose (former editor of Women's Weekly - Aussie version - and now head of the ABC - Aussie version), Billy Birmingham, aka the 12th man (used to make comedy records lampooning cricket commentators, including Richie Benaud), Sam Kekovich (you are already familiar with his work).
2016: The skinny Asian lady is Lee Lin Chin, who used to present the SBS (multicultural government TV channel) news. English beer is warm; I know, I lived there for a year. Beer should be at a temperature that makes you think you might get frostbitten fingers from holding the glass. Rugby player - yeah, maybe. No idea. I am from Melbourne (Aussie rules country). Cricketer is Mitchell Starc, left handed fast bowler. Queen of Denmark is Mary who came from Tasmania.
2017: Well, Poms et al. invading "Terra Nullius" (land that supposedly had no people in it - ignoring the fact that it already contained the oldest known civilisation on the planet). You can't insult the French on Bastille Day. This one is highlighting the multicultural aspect of Australia. The Serbian guy is Sam Kekovich again. The guy with the plastic wickets is Adam "Gillie" Gilchrist, who was a champion Australian wicket keeper and run making machine. The thing the Turkish lady is offering is a kebab, which is the perfect 2 am snack after a big night. The guys talking about the "ch'lly b'n" are Kiwis (we would call it an esky). The Aboriginal woman in the striped top is Cathy Freeman, who won the 400 m at the Sydney Olympics. "Boat people" is a (derogatory) term for refugees who arrive by boat. There were many of these from Vietnam in the 70s. One of the guys in my year in the medical course was a boat person, as was Ahn Doh, a famous comedian in Australia. The Liberal (think Tories) government has instituted policies, including naval patrols to identify and turn back the boats, off shore refugee processing (in places like Nauru and Papua New Guinea) and third country resettlement (including New Zealand and USA) to discourage them. The comment "Aren't we all boat people?" is very apt and is a dig at the government. Australia is very multicultural. 26% of Australians were born overseas and 50% of Australians have at least one parent who was born overseas.
2018: I think this is a play on West Side Story. Again, a bit anti-government ("Global warming is a lie. It's BS that we won't buy.") This a reflection on our government that is way behind others in instituting policies to reverse climate change and is actively pursuing a "gas-led recovery" (although this ad does predate the latter). Our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, once brought a lump of coal into Parliament as a "show and tell" to let the opposition (Labor and Greens) know that it is nothing to be afraid of. He also ridiculed the South Australian grid scale Tesla battery as being akin to the "Big Banana" (a tourist attraction in Coffs Harbour). "Can't even celebrate Christmas" refers to some schools that out of a sense of not causing offence/political correctness, have avoided the usual Christmas activities (Christmas carols, plays, decorations etc) - a bit like the way Americans say "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas".
2019: Refers to the fact that when they wrote the constitution, it contained a provision that New Zealand could join too. There were some indications that we would become one country, e.g. fighting wars as one group (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps - ANZAC). "One Nation" is a dig at Pauline Hanson's extreme right wing, anti-immigration party. The "underarm thing" was an infamous episode that occurred during a one day international cricket match between Australia and New Zealand in 1981. NZ needed 6 off the last ball of the match. The Australian captain, Greg Chappell instructed his little brother, Trevor, to bowl underarm to prevent a boundary. The batman threw away his bat in disgust. This was within the rules but "just not cricket". The Kiwis have hated us for it ever since. Yep, the mention of "Most of your awesome stuff is already ours" refers to Australia laying claim to NZ things (pavlova, Phar Lap - a famous racehorse who was born in NZ but trained and raced in Aus and "actor" probably refers to Russell Crowe. As Gladiator, he was considered Australian, but as someone assaulting people with phones, he was considered a Kiwi. Sharing the NZ Prime Minister refers to the fact that NZ's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, is a hip, clever, compassionate person, whilst Scott Morrison is a pompous, arrogant, fossil fuel-loving a-hole. I, for one, would be happy if we became the United States of Australian and New Zealand governed by Jacinda.
Where's 2020 (and 21, for that matter)? I think my favourite is 2016. I don't remember it, but it is clever. Let us know when you are coming down and I will put some lamb on the barbie for you.
Will confirm it is supposed to be Crowe, the scarf is red and green symbolising his part ownership, and big fandom towards the Rugby League team South Sydney.
as to the Pha Lap thing, the horse was legitimately purchased at a horse sale for the grand price of 160 guineas or £168 in 1926 (?), so he was no longer the property of NZ, he was owned by an aussie...

These ads would be out around my birthday and I thought they were hilarious (26th January-which is usually what Australia Day is celebrated on). They still make me smile a bit. I do love my BBQ and pavlova as my birthday cake lol.
I can see how some people dont like the 2017 one, but personally i think it is by far the best and celebrates everyone coming together even if originally it wasnt so peaceful

There are still MLA lamb advertising campaigns though they no longer make reference to Australia Day. The latest is “Make Lamb, Not Walls.”
Hahaha I haven't seen a lot of these. Just to give a bit of context:
The first one, the guy on the phone calling everyone is Richie Benaud. He was a cricketer and became a famous cricket commentator, you will hear his voice on Australian cricket commentary a LOT. Sadly died in 2015.
The others in the video are all famous Australian historical figures, the guy in the square helmet is depicting Ned Kelly, for example.
The lady in the second one in Warsaw is Lee Lin Chin, a famous world news journalist for the SBS network here. She covered a lot of stories and also did the Eurovision coverage for quite a while. I guess the joke is that she is stuck in Warsaw on Australia day covering some story and can't get back home, not sure if there was anything specific going on at that time.
Also I've never heard anyone non-Polish pronounce Kraków correctly, well done!!

2018 ad is a parody on the rumble between the Jets and the Sharks in West Side Story.
You look bewildered so I’ll explain the characters. Richie Benaud, a famous Aussie cricketer from the past, calls “Cookie” (Captain James Cook) to invite him around for a BBQ and some backyard cricket. Cook then checks with explorers, Burke and Wills (who died in the middle of nowhere), to join them. Then they get onto Ned Kelly, the famous Irish bushranger. The woman in the car is Ita Buttrose, publisher of Australia’s biggest selling magazine, The Australian Women’s Weekly.
Lamingtons are Aussie cakes, made from sponge blocks dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut. You can buy them and request jam and cream or just cream, and the bakery will split them and add whatever you request. They’re really delicious! I can’t recognise the guy who calls Richie and asks to join them, possibly a non-Aussie cricketer? The last guy is Sam Kekovic, a retired sportsman and commentator, who was hired to do the lamb commercials.
2016: that woman is Australian journalist and presenter, Lee Lin Chin. As a journalist, she would go wherever they sent her, so the ad puts her in Poland in the middle of winter instead of back in Oz at the peak of summer!
The Princess would be Princess Mary of Denmark, an Aussie who married Prince Frederick.

The Malaysian Aussie who asks, “Aren’t we all boat people?” Is a former contestant on MasterChef Australia season 1, Poh Ling Yeow, who is now a celebrity chef in her own right. There are also lots of Aussie cricketers mixed in with that crowd.

we didnt steal Phar lap , the owner bought an unfit horse with worts on it ,recognised its potential and brought it back to Australia and turned it into a champion . would be nothing in NZ . and pavlova was invented in Australia by a NZ chef for the visit of Pavlova the dancer .

Rob, what you may be missing is that these ads are packed with well-known aussies from sport, the arts, politics (the West Side Story parody had actual politicians).
Picture the Pommoe equivalent starring Pete Best, Cliff Richard, Botham, Ginger Spice, Boris J, Lulu, Jeremy Clarkson, a bunch of Jimmys (Savile, Carr, Edwards), Daniel Craig... are you getting it?

What I love about the Aussie day lamb ads is they were poking fun at the political aspects of their time, but the ultimate outcome is we all come together as one and embrace our countrymen.

I am an an Aussie and cannot recall seeing any of these ads. The Sam Kekovic ads are better than any of these.
Probably going to get howled down, but Australia was officially proclaimed a Commonwealth on January 1st, 1901 uniting all 6 States and was no longer recognised as a British Colony, so, January 1st is much more appropriate and less divisive.
The beauty of these ads is the inclusivity of them. Trying to explain all the cultural icons, we could be here for weeks.
Australia trying to annex New Zealand was because were were going through Prime Ministers like crazy, and we all wanted to adopt Jacinta.
She does seem to be doing a good job running things, better than our Scomo anyway.

Rob, I know you aren’t sure how to react to the recent history of Aboriginal (First Nations) and Australia Day / Invasion Day. That’s OK mate.
I’m aboriginal and my family approach it this way. The day before ‘Australia Day’ we celebrate what it is to be Aboriginal - ultimate environmental sustainability, land management, art, culture, song, peaceful ‘internation negotiation’ and a democracy and governance that is only recently being appreciated by governments and regulators the world over.
In Australia Day, we celebrate what it means to be as an Australian. There are many things to appreciate - such as TH-cam … and lamb! Cheers mate
The Burke and Wills thing is a real tragedy. The base camp left 8 hours before thair return, after waiting for them for 3 months. Thay subquencly died from starvation

Something you've not mentioned is the cost of the ads. Australian royalty has featured in these ads
Richie Benaud, Cathy Freeman, Adam Gilschrist, Wendell Sailor, etc, etc, etc. Many Aussie legends featured in the early ads.
And you won't be shocked, Pork and Beef had better years of sales than Lamb after their inclusion campaign.
Aussies just want meat. Not a message attached to it.

Rob, can I also recommend the recent movie, “The Dry” based on the book by Jane Harper. It will give you a picture of our droughts and the Aussie life in these times. It should be out on DVD or available on line by now. Australia is a vast land, full of contradictions, as are its people. You can die of heat in the outback or freeze in the desert overnight. You can be digging in the red dirt or skiing in the wintertime mountains. A UTube channel, Simon Hahmel, will show you the highlands in summer. Although, you have learnt a lot about us by now, you may be sick of us.

If you want Aussie lamb go to any supermarket in the UK most of it comes from here, mind you we do keep the best if you come over try the salt bush lamb it is a bit pricy but worth it.
