- Here is a short video on my experience installing an OEM Ram Trailer Brake Controller. I bought the unit new for $210 on Amazon in February 2021. This truck was a 2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn
I just drilled out the holes and used a rivet gun to rivet it nice and tight.
I did the same thing after a few minutes of trying the screws. not sure how anyone actually gets the screws in there from the back side.

A piece of double sided 3M poster tape would work fine for that third screw that is hard to get to, that would eliminate any possible rattle in the future and being sticky would help hold it in place as well. Double sided 3M poster tape can be bought at any home improvement store or craft store that sells the 3M velcro for mounting picture frames on walls.
I ordered my Brake controller kit several years ago to pull a trailer from Calif to Tx but the trip fell through and I never installed it....till now. The main clip that holds the controller in the bracket was broken off completely as was one of the other clips that helps to hold it in the bracket. (there are 3 total) To late to return it so I improvised by using 3 zip ties wrapped around the controller and the bracket. I also saw no reason to install it the way the instructions shows by trying to screw the bracket through the face plate opening. Every video I saw, it was just to much of a headache. I was able to use 2 self tapping screws and screwed them in from under the steering wheel. It was a little tedious but it worked!!! Its definitely not the prettiest installation but im good with it. I hope the Dodge techs don't laugh and ridicule me if they have to look at it when I take it to them to flash it. As one of the videos I watched asked: Why this installation was not designed so it could be installed from under the steering wheel??? Ed's comment about using a rivet gun is probably the easiest way to do it. Wish I would of thought of that before i used self tapping screws bc I have a rivet gun.
I notice my rotors do over heat due to not having trailer controller. My question is will it work on my 2018 ram tradesman? My truck is plain stock/basic as in no touch screen. So i wonder how this feature will work on menu selection? 🤷♂️.
Do I need a bypass to program my brake controller. Dealership couldn’t flash Made 2 different appointments and they tried I have the OSB to program myself. Thanks

So that tough to get to screw. Why can’t you just screw it in from the other side?
Will the trailer brake controller work without it being flashed at the dealership?
No, the software needs to be updated to recognize the controller. The dealer can do it, but I guess there is also a third party gizmo that will do it as well, but I don't know enough to go that route.
