This must look really bizarre to Dave and Gareth. I get all the references to our old folk tales like Momotaro, Sarukani-gassen, Hanasaka-Jijii, Urashima-Taro etc. and still find it quite weird. XD
FUN HISTORICAL FACT: We almost bombed Japan with live bats. The US military developed a "bat bomb" which dropped a device via parachute that released hundreds of live bats each with a little incendiary explosive set on a timer. The bats would fly out, seek eaves & overhangs on the wooden buildings of Japan and start major fires in urban areas. The bat bomb was tested in the US and passed with flying colors. The bat bomb was about to be put to use when the program was put on hold because the US military decided to drop nukes on Japan instead.
Even more fun fact. It is well known that the US high command watched this cartoon for ideas, and if the bat thing worked, it was going to be snakes and alligators next. Unfortunately, alligators were needed for the war in the atlantic, and snakes ended up being employed in shipyards to complete hard-to-reach welds.
To note, this animation isn't actually from 1936, it's from 1934, but it's set in a fictitious 1936 because of rising tensions between the United States and Japan at the time.
Oh my god, I think this cartoon may be deeper than I originally thought. But only when the tank guy ran over the snake and Gareth said "It tread on him" and then Dave just watched the cartoon with a blank face. There are so many things that Gareth says that just fly right over Dave's head and into oblivion.
So this is where they got the design for Cup Head and Mug Man 6:50

Japan in 1936:
Japan in 1945: ah shit
If you can read Japanese, you have to go right to left. Horizontally written Japanese was changed to English style left to right post war.
Scroll from the beginning roughly is demanding them to surrender the island.
I'm sure this is a cartoon classic in The Man in the High Castle universe.
I just love that the kid in the background just doesn't care about the film
This cartoon is making the Slim Shady Show look theatrical!
4:25 those are Rat-at-at-at-tlesnakes, Garry.
i’m sorry, is that sir finn in the background at several points
Yeah, of course. It's Dave's house, why wouldn't his kid be there?
he came in and said "hello Garry" to reprise his classic catch phrase.
“Hiiii Gaaaaary”
“No! No!”
"Hey Gary"
84 years later they made good on their murder-hornet threat.

Brad Pitt: WHATS IN THE BOXXXX!
Lol
Walt Disney would be pissed if he sees this
6:53 cuphead XD
"Staple removers" are scissors used for sewing. (shit, I'm becoming *that* guy.)
What's going on with the sound quality of the last few Trash Toons episodes.
It's really bad.
@Ghost With The Most No I'm referring to their voice quality. It sounds muffled and scratchy.
It’s been compressed to a super low bitrate, really unprofessional.
uhoh Dave's mad
"Normal stuff, as usual." Thanks for another great show.
One of the many peculiar aspects of this story is that Felix the Cat is apparently Japanese, and a good guy, while Mickey Mouse is evil.
@Dave Anthony - 5:58 That's a swallow, not a sparrow. I'm astonished you don't know this, considering how big of a swallowing aficionado you are.
As its Momotaro riding the bird, its probably a pheasant.
The ancient Japanese character is Momotaro
Why is the audio so bad? :(
Cut them some slack, they're filming this in Dave's house, for crying out loud.
03:00 AMERICA IS INVADING US WITH DRAGONS AGAIN!!
The title makes it sound like this cartoon is from an alternate universe! What is world 2?
Gareth astral-projected away from this crazy shit.
9:10 first loli anime
Sad thing is they were actually right about Disney being evil. Good on ya japan.
I knew Mickey Mouse was evil
FIX. SOUND.
島を明渡せ!

Don't cut away from the cartoon so much.
