A good tip is to have a wet kitchen cloth underneeth the stone which creates more friction against the table keeping the stone more stable. You do not seem to be having that problem but i sometimes do when sharpening.
The best way to sharpen a axe, hatchet, or tomahawk is get a smaller stone, I use the stones from a lanky controlled angle system but anything 4in or smaller that fits in the hand hood. You can clap it, I hold my tomahawks between my legs so I can catch the light, and move the stone in circular motions. Once I finish both sides with the coarse, I go with the med grit and which ever direction I used with the previous go the opposite direction each grit. You dont have to buy I find it works well. Mark the edge with a sharpie before you start and you can't go wrong. This method I can get hair shaving razor sharp edges on my tomahawks and axes. To each is own though, everyone has different preferences.
But I dont want to cut paper. Where does a person stop sharpening to achieve splitting a log well or properly or in spoon carving? Does it have to be that sharp?
The secret to successful sharpening is to feel for the blade's edge coming in contact with the sharpening media and be consistent at that angle. That is what you are doing in this video. Following a technique like a recipe without paying attention to the sounds and the feel of the edge always gives frustrating results. You could still get it sharper by very careful and light stropping or backward motion on your finest stone.
great video. i love all sharpening videos. I you dont mind me saying, one thing you can do to get a better edge is everytime you draw your axe/knife across the stone and it falls off one side. You are rounding that tip witch w ill effect the blades geometry. its just my 2 cents man. iv been a full time sharpener for over 10 years. take it or leave it
+Jason Myers I don't mind you saying this at all, on the contrary, I thank you for your contribution! I will try this tip the next time! So you mean that I should slide it only until it reaches the edge of the stone but not until it falls off?
yes do not let it drop off. it will round your the top and bottle of your axe, and if you do it to a knife you will notice it alot sooner. the tip will start to round with one sharpening. with an axe i believe it would take some time. but its good to learn from your bad habits. other than that you have great form. you old the angel of the blade in relation to the stone very well. happy sharpening .
An axe should be as sharp as possible but the materials used in axes are typically not as hard as in knives, chisels and so on. Hence it may not benefit from having a to thin edge since it will dull quickly. More than a 1000 grit seem overkill to me anyways!
This must take practice ? I did exactly this and I got my edge nice and clean and even but I just Cant seem to get it SHARP lol.. any tips for me? Awesome vid man thank u

You might have accidentally changed the angle a few times. Pay attention to the angle and keep it consistent!
Difficulty level of sharpening an axe. I think it is about the same as a knife if they have the same hardness in their steel. You can sharpen some knives in a few minutes but they will not hold their edges but a few minutes. My Kabar takes several hours to sharpen but it will maintain its edge for all of the hunting season. My chef’s knife will hardly maintain its edge to allow me to cut up a beef roast. I know it is junk steel but it did not cost a bunch, either.
"you don't need too many strokes, you just need good strokes" I felt that.
lmao

This is exactly what the sushi chefs at my restaurant do when sharpening with the stone.
He has a rubber stone holder. Exactly the same if not better.
Just a tip, don't put so much force on the stone.

Jeremy Smith Can you make a video please?
It's good to see a whetstone video! I wish there was more of them. However, it is usually done with a circular stone or more so with a file. :)
this looks like the right way to sharper an axe , thank you
Your passion is inspiring
Thank you very much i like how concise your instructions are thank you so much
But I dont want to cut paper. Where does a person stop sharpening to achieve splitting a log well or properly or in spoon carving? Does it have to be that sharp?
The sharper, the better it is for carving.
will a 6000/1000 stone be okay?
A second cut file, and an axe puck works well too
thank you so much for this video I can use this alot ... My hatchet is SUPER dull!
+Clayton Henry Now that you have the stones, I hope that will change! ;)
We have the same hatchet and thanks allot because mine is getting dull
Very helpful! I'm sharpening my S&W hatchet tomorrow with your technique
Went here to see how to sharpen an axe. Didn't expected to hear about Miyamoto Musashi. So good ! :D Thanks for the video :)
Really enjoyed that video, great patience, expertly done, thanks for sharing 😃👍
So I have question. I just bought a hatchet and it came with no edge what so ever, will this stone help make an edge ? Or do I need different tools?
Awesome. I have the same axe.
Do you have to put a polished edge on an axe say like a 4000/6000 or even a 10000 grit Japanese waterstone
Where did you buy your sharpening stones from?
I somehow achieved a almost razor sharp like blade on my hatchet using sandstone....
I got a razor sharp blade using sandstone first, and then chalk. The chalk makes the edge very fine

Thanks mate, glad to have you around! :)
Do you want it as sharp as a knife? Does that not indicate a super fine edge? Would a super fine edge hold up to the chopping?
Good video -- thanks very much!
This video shall help me restore my mighty tomahawk! Tonight is shall drink wine from my enemie's skulls!
but in other videos they say the axes doesnt have to be too sharpen, how many sharpen have to de an axe to be optimal?

If you don't mind me asking. Where did you get the stones from? I would love to get the same one's.
+Edward Rodriguez Amazon.
Thank you. What's the manufacturer's name?
Edward Rodriguez
Just search ceramic sharpening stone, I don't remember.
This whetsotne is produced by chinese. And you could buy it in Amazon us
You can get in 2 dollar shop for 2 dollar
Any particular reason you don't do any edge trailing strokes?
Hi there I just want to ask the stone you are using is a slow or fast wearing stone because I'm thinking to buy the same one .
The first one
This must take practice ? I did exactly this and I got my edge nice and clean and even but I just Cant seem to get it SHARP lol.. any tips for me? Awesome vid man thank u

What's the link for your water stone?
hold the stone in a vice
thanks martin!!!
+Jonathan Jonathan Martin? :) How come?
How do you keep the stone from sliding?
Rubber base or, if you don't have that, a wet towel.
Pretty sharp for a crappy axe!I have one too
LiL Hustler that the best axe I’ve ever owned lol
LiL Hustler, Horses for courses, my X7 is only for wild camping, works perfectly for me, never going to be building a Mall with it.
You shouldn't run the blade off the edge of the stone like that your wrecking the edge and the stone.
How come it gets supersharp and the stone is still fine then?
A little less pressure will do some good. Pushing a little too hard there
You sharpen an axe the same way I sharpen my Kabar knife
