An INTP is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.

Brilliant! That's basically what I say.
      Them: "You're late!"
Me: "For what? What did I miss?"
Them: "You're expected to be here at this time."
Me: "I'm here now, what do you need?"
Them: "No, you need to be here when you're expected."
Me: "How is that related to the work that I do?"
Them: "Just please be here on time."
Me: "Oh, I am. This is precisely the time I meant to be here ...give or take."
Me: "Why don't you ever ask me when I'm going to leave?"
      Them: crickets...

The most appropriate reason for INTPs being late according to me is, cos I am mostly inside my head while doing monotonous stuffs like bathing, dressing myself up, eating...etc. So we take a lot of little-little extra time periods, and I get really late when I come back to my real life

I am actually rarely if EVER late. I am, however, not "on time". I'm usually too early. I often come too early, because I KNOW I have no grasp of time, and therefore try to ensure I have more than I need. So I'm almost always half an hour early for work, instead of 'right on time'.

    • @Ignasimp
      @Ignasimp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm very aware of the time, i can usually predict the time with a lot of accuracy if i'm trying to be aware of it. When I want to relax with friends or so when the work is done i become complitelly unaware of time sometimes though.

  • @laakasuo

INTPs suck at being on time, because being on time is conceding to somebody else's power and rhythm of life. INTPs are cats, you can't control them, if you try they will automatically resist. However, you can make INTPs come on time, if they like you and make them understand that being on time is an important personal emotional issue to you. Furthermore, you need to tell them, that this has nothing to do with rationality, it is just your quirk and they can show you appreciation by being on time. It is incredibly difficult for free flowing cats to be on somebody else's time, so if they will be on time somewhere, they are really exerting themselves and doing it to please you (or somebody else, who has the understanding yo explain these things to them). So if they manage to be on time, be sure to thank them. I know, this is all super weird and normal people don't function like this. But normal people are not INTPs.

As an INTP, I was chronically late everywhere I went, much to the chagrin of my ESTJ boss. It mostly had to do with control and dominion over my time. (If I had to be there at 8, and should have left the house at 7:45, I wouldn't leave the house until 7:58; those last 13 minutes belonged to me, damn it, and nobody could take them from me).
What changed was my finally getting fed up with my lack of motivation, and realizing that getting to work earlier would increase my motivation in ways I couldn't yet explain. So now, my mornings have become a study in self-care: I leave the house for the coffee shop an hour early, hang out there and read for a bit, then leave for work, arriving 10-15 minutes early.
And I have to say, my motivation has increased, as well as the respect from my bosses and colleagues. Feels pretty good.

  • @konstantinosmei

I'm not on time because I've planned how to get there on time.
Making the plan for an INTP is the fun part. Carrying it through the plans is left for other types.
This apparent paradox happens because INTPs detach from reality more than other types.

Oh god, I'm horrible about being late. I'd say, I'm usually late if 1) I can get away with being late, 2) If it's too early in the morning for me, or 3) if I don't really think it's too important or if I dread going to it.

He's 100% correct about INTP punctuality; I already know I'm going to be late to my own funeral! And the propensity INTPs can have to attempt becoming ESFJ to interact on a socially outgoing level to the other 96.7% of the population.
An example: An INTP starts listening to pop hip hop... 1 week later is up at 2am YouTubing musical theory, downloads an electronic music producer software. Then an hour later after creating an amatuer track... Oh look at this new TH-cam video on 'Are there pyramids at the bottom of the Dead Sea'.

Here's why I run late. When I'm getting ready to go, I feel like I'm in Get Stuff Done mode. And I see little things I can take care of like taking out the trash or picking up a bunch of random stuff on the floor. It's hard for me to focus on just getting ready and leaving. Especially if I'm running early. I'm like, "Oh, I have plenty of time...let me squeeze in a bunch of tasks." Then I lose track of time and am late.

STLShu i used to be when i was in my teenage years. Except for school because our bus was always late. If my theory is correct and the bus would drive as fast as my mother would it shouldve been on time, but ofcourse as an intp i dont calculate in errors. Because theoretically errors dont exist, only if the theory was not correct. What happens next is self guilt or self sympathising. Which only holds us back as we dont think about ourselves too much. I now work as an indepent person. A Psychologist to be exact. My clients are usually working full time and cant come in day time which makes it easier for me because there is no need to wake up at a certain hour just for a patient. I feel great not having to bow down to someone else and managing people at the same time.

Great content. Time is like a noncorporeal enemy with whom I'm always at a standoff lol. There's so much anxiety at the intrusion it presents into all the things I want to do that day...and I'm stuck wondering how the heck did I get myself into a commitment that I never particularly wanted to keep, when I'm generally so good at not getting into such things. The pressure builds and I relent and rush to the event - 15 minutes late. Afterwards, unfailingly, I chuckle at myself because it really wasn't so bad (the event). Usually.

Why can’t we be on time?
As if that’s not a question we’ve asked ourselves a million or more times....
    1. I really try (sometimes) but in spite of everything I do ...it just never seems to work out
    2. Time is a concept that is so abstract to my thinking I just can’t get my mind around it (I can go into detail about the deeper meaning of every Bob Dylan lyric but to be on time that’s just too much for my brain to comprehend)
    3. Wherever it is I’m supposed to be....there’s a good chance I don’t want to be there so I’m putting it off as long as I can.

Well, just listen to the video a couple of times. I as an INTP experience the same. Also when I went to University. I really struggled with this when I was younger. I just turned 40 this year and still struggle a bit but have gotten so much better about noticing when I do it and inwardly directing myself to pay attention. I think a part of my motivation to develop my ability to pay attention is that I noticed I missed a lot of what people I cared about were saying. I want to know the people I care about and I always felt so guilty and disappointed at what I'd missed when they would share something with me and my brain went on a journey while they were talking. I got in the habit of being hyper-alert so I could be a good listener. When I was in college, I rarely went to class when I could get away with it because I knew I wasn't going to be able to pay attention anyway and I got more enjoyment by learning the subject on my own at my own pace. The primary benefit of going to class was not missing exam dates and turning in homework (which in my case was often only half done, I did not do well when homework counted toward a large portion of the grade)

I know exactly why I go late to things although I only speak for myself...I ABSOLUTELY HATE having to sit/stand around making stupid meaningless small talk with people before something starts, and the best way to avoid it is to show up when it is already underway. Once a meeting or activity starts, I am MUCH happier about being in a group when the small talk window is over.

I hate it when people make comments like, "We INTPs are never on time because..."
No. Just no. Speak for yourself. The reason why I'm always late is not necessarily the reason why all other iNTPs are late.
So, I will just say - without any of the silly MBTI lingo - I used to 'always' be late because I when I look at a clock I always judge wrongly how much time it takes me to get ready (or whatever).
I just seem to underestimate how long something will take. My sense of direct is also a bit challenged. For me, judging time and location is difficult.
But I have taught myself how to be early - not on time, but EARLY - by adding 40 mins to whatever time I think I have to leave. That way it works out for me.

Hi, interesting video :) I was just wondering about what you said about not being goal-oriented and not focusing so much on being disciplined. I am a very driven and ambitious INTP, but find that so far I've needed to develop systems to get myself to really stick to stuff. If I have a goal in mind that I know I want to achieve, isn't it better to try to commit to it rather than shifting focus and not finishing anything? If not, what are better ways for INTPs to make sure they get stuff done? Thanks :)

This is so interesting to me. Would you say your Si is really developed? Or that you're more partial to it at least? Is it easy for you to get into a routine? Because for me it's extremely difficult. I can see how a set routine would greatly benefit me, but I always end up breaking it after a while. It's like I resist the predictability of it. I think I rely on my Ne a lot, and neglect my Si. This is interesting because I don't know whether this difference within the same types is due to the level of individual maturity or due to subtypes within the types, ykwim? Because how can one INTP be a complete neat freak, while another is this dork that is always late and doesn't have a clear purpose to their life?

    • @lukasmarteleur9318
      @lukasmarteleur9318 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, just saw your comment on my old comment :)
I'd say so yeah, I've always been more of a neat freak than a dork hahah.
On the other hand, I also struggle to stick to a very strict schedule.
I'd recommend deliberately building some key habits step by step, while still making sure you get that balance right.
It's easier to follow a routine you're happy with, so you've got to make sure you block time and make room for plenty of spontaneous time and time to socialize as well as 'deep work', uninterrupted blocks of time. I find that I'm the happiest and most productive when I give my Ne the time it needs to explore all kinds of topics, and do spontaneous stuff, yet still have that framework of habits and a continuous purpose/long-term project to fall back on and immerse myself into. Just make sure neither of the functions take over completely .

Maybe it's just about shifting modes sometimes. While the focused, disciplined approach works great to keep ourselves from getting overwhelmed and too absorbed, perhaps we need to schedule free time to just do whatever - silly things and create things?

i think the best thing for any intp to do is to learn/study/major in mathematics/logic. whether it be pure mathematics (undergrad), mathematical logic (grad school), or philosophical logic. then with the rest of your time find ways to be the opposite (illogical, not make sense, be spontaneous so you can learn from illogical things from random behavior).

Another great video Erik, I'm habitualy late for appointments because of my INTP view of time, I guess that since string theory states everything is just vibrating strands of energy there relatively isn't any accurate time so how can I be late if no one knows exactly what time it IS, lol.

Fantastic observation! I have all the issues and have corrected most of them, except procrastination. I am always late to work, late to leave work, and turn in work the last minute. The only reason I am still employed is that it is public sector union job. No supervisor wants the trouble of kicking me out unless I punch someone at work in the face.

Same here, always late to arrive, late to leave, and terrible about deadlines. I work in the private sector though and think the only reason my employer tolerates this is because my work is often very good. I never think it is and it never seems complete when I run out of time and have to turn it in, but I get a lot of positive feedback (on the work, not on punctuality or social skills. One of my performance reviews where they justified not promoting me went along the lines of your work is very thorough and the quality is exceptional, but you need to work on arriving earlier and being more socially proactive 😡) and I have noticed a surprising difference between my work and the work of my peers. That being said, my peers seem a lot less stressed and manage the whole work-life balance thing much better than I do

@@humanoid1948 haha my yearly eval says pretty much the same every year; great work product but needs arriving on time, leave on time, turn in work timely. I am the only one never promoted from my training class (one gal is now below our department’s top boss). At work I only talk when I was approached. Thankfully being social is not important in my office. I have 18 more months before I plan to retire. Any regret not being promoted? No. Money and title don’t motivate me.

Well being in time for me is somehow relative . When being in time affects me and others, like having a meeting with someone , I regard being in time as some sort of respect for the other person, so I'm always in time. But, when being in time only affects me, like attending a class or something similar, I always show up late.

I am always aware of time, in the sense that life is very short and I know I will not have enough time to do all the things I want to do and learn all the things I want to learn, but I have no feel for time unless I'm under stress. If I'm relaxed, I think it's been 10 minutes when it's actually been a half an hour. I can be on time if I feel some stress, which seems to get me out of my head and more aware of my surroundings and everything that needs to happen to make being on time a reality. However, I don't like to feel stressed, so I only let myself stress if it is really important for me to be on time

The time issue is funny, I have not worn a watch in 25 years which says a lot about what I think about time. Regarding the INTP being at their best, especially in social settings, it is important to note that we are very, very ambitious. The drive for that ambition is the key I believe. Specifically, we drive ourselves to succeed knowing full well that it is in that condition that all of our ´systems´ seem to flow together in unison. Without it they interfere and crash into each other from time to time.

I have a small problem when I'm not told to be at work at a certain time, then I'll just show up whenever I feel like it. This was the case at my previous job. There were days few and far between where I would be asked to show up early and I'd be on time at those instances. What was different in those instances was that my managers made it a point to make it seem important to them and the company that I be there. If they don't stress importance, then I will just go in whenever I felt like.
This is also similar to class times or dates. I am consistently on time to classes I care about getting a good grade in (so, basically every class). And if my boyfriend, friends, or even my mother want to set a date to meet, I'm always on time for them.
When it comes to me, I never set deadlines for myself. But if I have a project I'm working on at work, personal deadlines are so important to me getting things done. When I was in elementary school I had a kitchen timer that would tick for an hour and a half, telling me to finish my homework before the ring. And it always worked for me because my mom told me it was important for me to finish before that time ran out.

Personally, I'm usually on time, but that's due to having grown up without a car and therefore having to rely on public transport. If I missed my bus/train then I might miss my appointment altogether. That aside, I am definitely becoming more 'lazy' and cutting it very fine when I do eventually leave the house. I loathe waiting around so I'll leave at the last possible moment. Plus, I'm so absentminded I lose track of time.

I suck at being early, I'm only early if I'm interested in actually going there. Or theres severe punishment for being late.
The reason I'm late is that I can easily get away with it. Everyone around me is used to me being late so I dont even bother being early. Nobody scolds me anymore and even if you scold me theres still a possibility of me still not complying.

I'm on time most of the time and I'm intp. The reason for being late would be forget about the social event, not actually wanting to go in the first place, feeling ill, and having an emergency come up. Those are my reasons for being late when I am. Most of the time it's the first 2 reasons. Lol. When I am on time I usually end up waiting for everyone else to get there and that feels like a waste of time.

Quick question, can INTPs function well in any circumstance by becoming healthy themselves, or do certain situations make it hard to function for INTPs? For example, an INTP without an outlet for problem solving other than raising children and other social contexts, I wonder if they'd have a hard time functioning well.
