Sticky was really penny’s only good friend. And Michael as well. But Zoey was basically clearly the follower, Lacienaga pretty much was the attention seeker but makes it clear she doesn’t like penny, and Dijjonay the absolute trash of the bunch is absolutely the worst, only befriending penny for her self gain and that’s it. She’s def the type of person that would say “you still my girl right” after betraying her friends. I understand the colorism of Dijjonay but lowkey after rewatching the series just now I can literally see why everyone hates Dijjonay now.
The show is really misogynistic. Why are all the girls so mean to Penny while all the guys are nice to her? This show really thinks that all teenage girls have it out for each other.
Just realized for the first time how terrible it is that this show with predominately POC characters pushes really messed up messages about accepting abuse and normalizing mistreatment. I thought this show was good as a kid, although I often felt frustrated on Penny's behalf and confused about her crappy relationships. Tbh it was one of the only shows I watched as a kid with such a diverse cast (That's So Raven as well) and it makes me wonder if it could've affected how I viewed Black people. That's really upsetting to think about, especially because this show is such a recent example of this but it's definitely not the last or only one.
8:09 Knowing Dejonay's past... why did ya'll buy this?" Because Lacienega and Zoey would've done the exact same thing to Penny, Lacienega more so since she and Penny aren't really friends, but all of Penny's friends would take advantage of her at the drop of a hat. Dejonay's just the worst of them.
Dijonay was horrible to Penny, she gaslighted Her every time She has a friend and when she wants something she just disguised herself as her "friend" but everything she did before that is like nothing happened. Dijonay was a horrible friend.
I mean I don’t blame Penny for taking care of the other siblings since they were all pretty young and they had no one to watch them BUT Dijonay was a horrible person majority of the time and this was acknowledged yet Penny still forgave her and that always made me so confused. But it did teach me to not accept bs from people (unlike Penny) and have people who I can trust around me
Ticketmaster has actually been online since 1996. They founded in 1976. So they might have been able to get tickets online if they had access to a computer in 2003, I don't remember if they did. I was 8 in 2003 and didn't get a computer until late 2003/2004 so I wasn't buying concert tickets at that age lol. Fun fact, I was on the internet before Google, which wasn't public until August 19th, 2004 and it was a game changer. Up until then it was Ask Jeeves, released in 1997.
Congrats on getting your first apartment! Getting your first place to live with no help is a huge accomplishment! You should be really proud of yourself!
Accepting that someone is a terrible person doesn't make things right. This is an awful message to teach kids. I knew a guy who called himself a bitch and a diva, but went on to say he loved that about himself. Like, no, that's now how this works. Realizing you're this way is step one, step two is doing something about it to grow to be a better person
Looking back, Dejonay being best friends with LaCienega should have been a big red flag. LaCienega is at least upfront about how she feels about Penny, and others. By the end of each episode, I'm still questioning Dejonay's loyalty to Penny. What annoys me is that it's played off as a joke most of the time. It has the same vibes as "it's just a prank bro". I hope they do something about this in the reboot at some point. I haven't seen it yet, but it's still super early. Dejonay needs to _really_ learn a lesson.
Nope, Dijonay is still a trifling piece of crap. Ain't nothin' change. As a matter of fact, Michael now is the only true friend to Penny because everyone else is still fake.
Penny might accept that disrespect to come from her friends but somewhere down the road when ya’ll get older and you face real life situations there is going to be separation. The reason why my circle is small now.
Oftentimes, I feel a small circle of close friends is better than a whole bunch of fake friends! People either move away or change in ways that are no longer compatable to you and in ways that's okay!
Oscar and Trudy also made me mad in the babysitting episode. They are rich they have the money to hire a babysitter, so why do they always interrupt Penny’s plans and make her babysit😕 (I do understand that there are circumstances and it’s not wrong for penny to babysit, but every single time)
I remember watching the proud family but not any of the actual content. But when you said Djonay *kept her ticket* and then brought *all her siblings* to Penny's house.... *I immediately knew what was up* 😂
I love Love LOVE that you appreciate your adulting and the way you phrased it was amazing “I’m trying to celebrate even my small victories!” Keep appreciating you. A woman that appreciates herself will be more successful and happier in life
I never liked the proud family. There were a few individual episodes that I did like but there were things that I hated that outnumbered the things I like. when I was little I chalked it up to being white as paste in a white as paste area oh, and thought that I just didn't understand or appreciate it the way somebody from a more diverse background might. But now that I actually get the opportunity of hearing black creators talk about it I understand that my gut feeling about the show was justified. I hate how the characters treat each other.
I feel you. I liked the show, but always got the feeling that my mom (white) wasn't crazy about it. I thought that she just didn't understand the show, but it turns out that she didn't like the energy of the characters. It's actually kinda harmful to have such a negative theme (Penny having to accept the mistreatment/neglect from friends and family) for a show predominantly about poc. Never thought of that before
I’m a Black girl and I agree. This is exactly why I hate The Proud Family. I want to like it but the way everyone’s so salty and cruel towards Penny and each other and she’s just expected to take it makes me so uncomfortable and tired, it’s rancid.
i’m not black (so can someone who is let me know) but i feel like naming a black character dijonay (like dijon mustard???) and her sibling literally tobasco sounds really fucked up to me?? like isnt it a stereotype for black people to have “ridiculous” names?? before this episode i didnt even realize dijonays name was like dijon and i thought it was cute. anyway what do you think? edit: just got to the part where she talks about it
and while we’re on the topic of potential racism in the show, can someone explain to me why the gross sisters are blue???? idk i know pretty much nothing yet but i’ve learned a but about like colorism within black communities and singling out people who are “more black”? like i said i dont know much but the fact that they’re blue is so weird to me like isnt it a thing in old racist cartoons where black characters are blue? :(
Djonay was always a fake friends. She always showed her true colors multiple times to Penny, and Penny continuously ignored the signs. She kept being friends with Djonay and falling for her Bs.
Honestly, all the characters in that show were shitty, trashy people. Oscar was the best of them, but suffered from Dopey Dad Tropism, Dijonay was the absolute worst character though
I dunno why people shit on Oscar so much. Being an adult I realized how on the money his concerns were once I got to know about folks like Onision and Dan Schneider.
@@ZX-Gear I agree with you, but I think that part of why people give Oscar so much shit is because Oscar despite being reasonably intelligent is often framed as a loser who after he missed that fateful Basketball Shot, has tried to become a successful salesman of Proud Snax even though almost everyone in the series considers they taste like shit.
@@KhaosAdmiral The guy apparently has the skills to market stuff. I mean it takes a swallowing of pride but it would help him if he put his efforts to where his skills are.
I think the kids acting bad and things like that is an homage to Bebe's kids which was a movie that the creator of the proud family either directed or did the animation of it. I mean Penny did a reference to it when she said "Bebe's kids." in the movie Bebe's kids were a bunch of badass kids because their mother Bebe couldn't take care of them because she was working or just gone all the time. So yeah just some 2 cents :)
Do you think when they finally go through with the reboot, they’ll address this? That just because you call yourself a persons friend doesn’t mean that you are allowed to treat them anyway you want to?
@@ImaisFace Well I guess it’s better than nothing or keeping things the same. It’s just that toxic friendships are being more and more addressed lately. I had a couple of those growing up and I really wish that I had today’s mentality back then. I was under the impression that sometimes friends can be jerks to you
No, here's the thing, this stuff still goes on. I even remember seeing my little niece watching Trolls and something happened between the group (I don't remember I was listening not watching) and in the end, even though this one troll in the group was basically being a little ho bag, they ended up accepting him as he is. LIKE? NO.

Dijonay: You came back for me Penny! Penny: Yeah, I thought leaving you outside wasn't punishment enough. I need the type of catharsis that only violence can provide! Dijonay: What? *Penny proceeds to beat up Dijonay.*
The worst part of this episode (penny still forgives dijonay ngl I really hope in the 2022 reboot she drops her friends bonus:THE FACT that in the FIRST AND I MEAN FIRST episode lacienga pulls up and basically takes over penny's house and trudy,GETS PENNY TO BE FRIENDS WITH HER that was the thing in the episode that really made me angry. (I don't even remember if it was the actual first episode but still,BOTTOM LINE *PENNY PROUD NEEDS NEW FRIENDS*
I agree with you about this because that's just crazy and I was so mad at Dijonay for being fake towards Penny in this episode and I always thought that Penny deserves a friend who won't keep using her and taking advantage of her plus whenever she wants to go out and chill with friends I swear her parents are always making her watch the twins.
I’ve noticed that horrible friend trope in other older shows as well. For example, Patrick Star from Spongebob. Animated Atrocities has a whole slew of videos on that.
I always took it as kind of an example of how when you’re young you really don’t have always good friends at least not till you get much older and you become more wiser to realize that the people used to hang out would are not the kind of people you should’ve been hanging out with in the first place. At some point we which this age where we become somewhat superficial and we want to be part of the in crowd so we kind of overshadow things like being cruel to others mean-spirited jokes vandalism or just violence. When I was growing up I had at least 12 or 13 friends in my entire life and most the time it wasn’t them that left it was mostly me because it would seem like I would grow up and they wouldn’t. It’s like you have a friend who loves to play with bottle rockets and you enjoy bottle rockets as well see you in him light bottle rockets and enjoy the explosion. But at some point you kind of get over a bottle rockets and want to do something else…. But for some reason they don’t and they want to continue doing the bottle rocket thing. The problem is though is that you can probably put up with them and they’re infatuation with bottle rockets but when they start recommending doing some let’s say somewhat problematically dark activities with the bottle rocket. Then you’re probably going to say I’m out!…. I feel like you don’t really develop true friendships until you get to a certain level of maturity. That’s why I told my niece one time that all her friends are probably more likely never going to be her true friends but then there’s a good chance that they could overtime. I mean there’s a difference between buddies and pals…..Compared to actual honest to good true friends. That’s probably why you watch the show originally and didn’t catch on to that but then years later as he grew up and matured as a person, you watch these old episodes. And you realize just how terrible these friends actually were because you know better now. It may also make you realize why your taste in friends sucked back in school as well.
LaCienga takes 2nd place for shit friend And I think part of the reason that about her that pissed me off so much, was that she knew how to manipulate the adults into taking her side Worst episode though was the one where Penny‘s baby siblings were wished into adults
The worst part is the "you're accepting me for who I am" thing, it's teaching kids who behave badly that real friends should accept them like they are, when instead they should change!
Proud Family is one of those shows you love yet deep down know all the characters are just terrible. Some more than others but the point still stands. Also "hey yall, imma post a video om TH-cam of me putting on makeup for 20 minutes talking about a Disney show": awesome.
idk if it was intentional on the creator’s part or not, but maybe Penny doesn’t have good friends because it reinforces the show title “Proud Family” or the idea that family will always be there for you, even when your “friends” aren’t.
But her family is shitty with her too? I rememeber watching an episode when BB and CC (the baby twins) suddenly grow up and Penny's friend ditched her and treated her like shit. And then even thr family were treating Penny like she was the step-daughter they never wanted. I tell you this, these episodes made me so mad I rememer avoiding the show everytime it was on tv lol
Imai would have been a little kid when this aired and was first in reruns, which is why the Peanut Butter and Jelly Time scene and the kids acting Ministrel like would have been funny, but as an Adult realized how ignorant this and insulting the scene really was. I'm significantly older (I'm 16 years older than her and I found myself frowning as she revisited the Peanut Butter and Jelly Time scene and this scene seemed funny to me when I was about 18.
I hate how the proud family glorifies and normalizes abuse and adulification. Like that shit is normal and you just Gotta deal with it and turn the other cheek like what the fuck. When I was little I literally thought that. Shit is normal because if it wasn’t the show would’ve made that clear. It’s abusive for your parents to saddle you with nine kids or two toddlers at the last minute instead of calling a babysitter. Like it sucks if they do it once but it is straight up abuse if they do it all the time.
If someone did Good to Evil on Proud Family. This is to name a few and I can be wrong on this list since I haven't seen a lot of the episodes and its been a long time since watching this show. Good: Bebe and Cece (most Good) Penny Bobby Sticky Trudy Neutral: Zoey Suga Mama Oscar Evil: The Gross Sisters (lesser Evil) LaCienega (early in the series) Wizard Kelly Dijonay (most Evil)
I'm old enough to remember OG Proud Family. I never liked Penny's "friends" (Zoey was ok) because they were so fake and toxic, especially Dijonay. I remember Suga Mama telling Penny to drop them because she knew they were fake as hell. The reboot has made them ten times worse. The new characters aren't any better either.
I was born in 91, never heard of Third Story. I loved watching this show with my grandma, as she always said "Turn on Suga Mama" Pretty cool that they had so many real Black celebrities on the Disney Channel. Wtf happened?! 😿
Trudy was trash for pulling that on Penny at the last second. Penny stayed in that line for over two days, and Trudy had to have known that beforehand AND when the concert would be, then she pulls that card on her after she finally gets her ticket! And Penny couldn't even mumble her disgust about the whole thing without Trudy bitching about that too. Episodes like these are why I hate the Proud Family. Don't get me wrong, it was funny, but the disrespect and mistreatment Penny gets on the regular basis and everyone expecting her to just take it (and forgive them in Dijonay's case), not to mention parentifying her to watch her siblings NONSTOP without arguments is what makes this show disgusting and immoral to me.
wow I watched the proud family dubbed when I was a kid. didn't know that dijonay and her family talked in a different way than the rest of the characters, most of the time when a show is dubbed in latinoamerica is dubbed in what we call español neutro (neutral spanish) so it doesn't have any dialect or mannerism in specific(well most of the time) and any hispanic person from south america can understand. this makes think of all the times in this and other shows I must have missed something cause most of the times many characters get dubbed without any accent... except for the chang triplets they still got the most forced and "comical" accent their VA's could make. Well, appart from that Proud Family has a wonderfull hispanic dub, and its still really funny

Which is why I don't buy the "dark skinned characters are portrayed negatively" complaint.
I agree. I watched this show when it was on air when I was younger, and I do notice that the characters that are the most consistently problematic are the dark skinned characters, i.e Dijonay and her family and the gross sisters. You can add Suga Mama in there, too. And that was typically the theme on these black shows or movies back then. The light skinned woman exemplified goodness and kindness while the dark skinned woman exemplified abrasiveness and rudeness. Things have gotten slightly better, but it was really terrible back then.

Dijonay made me SOOOO mad in this episode 😠 Penny should've ended their SO CALLED FRIENDSHIP right then and there.
8:09 Knowing Dejonay's past... why did ya'll buy this?"
Because Lacienega and Zoey would've done the exact same thing to Penny, Lacienega more so since she and Penny aren't really friends, but all of Penny's friends would take advantage of her at the drop of a hat.
Dejonay's just the worst of them.
I REALLY hope they work on Penny's friends in the reboot. Penny was way too good for them (also R.I.P. Olay :( ).
wait what
RIP Olay?? Ummmm first of all Raquel voices Nubia ( Gross sisters ) with the braids. The other 2 didn’t talk.
no, they didn´t
Dijonay was horrible to Penny, she gaslighted Her every time She has a friend and when she wants something she just disguised herself as her "friend" but everything she did before that is like nothing happened. Dijonay was a horrible friend.
Sugarmama was my favorite lol she always told Penny watch out for your friends especially that Dijonay 😂😂😂
Sugar Mama was always telling Penny how fake her friends were and she should drop them, she should've listened to Sugar Mama, she was speaking facts.
True sugar mama was speaking facts
I mean I don’t blame Penny for taking care of the other siblings since they were all pretty young and they had no one to watch them BUT Dijonay was a horrible person majority of the time and this was acknowledged yet Penny still forgave her and that always made me so confused. But it did teach me to not accept bs from people (unlike Penny) and have people who I can trust around me
Penny did say however that she can't trust Dijonay anymore.
Lmaoooo i can’t get over how she left them outside starved for 2 days and went home
WITH A NEW OUTFIT!!! Lmaooooo
Dejonay needs to _really_ learn a lesson.
and then the sequel reboot dijonay is still the same.
Nope, Dijonay is still a trifling piece of crap. Ain't nothin' change. As a matter of fact, Michael now is the only true friend to Penny because everyone else is still fake.
Are we gonna talk about how beautiful her makeup is?? Because that’s amazing! 😍
They are rich they have the money to hire a babysitter, so why do they always interrupt Penny’s plans and make her babysit😕
(I do understand that there are circumstances and it’s not wrong for penny to babysit, but every single time)
I remember watching the proud family but not any of the actual content. But when you said Djonay *kept her ticket* and then brought *all her siblings* to Penny's house.... *I immediately knew what was up* 😂
They always say the Grandmas always got ur back through EVERYTHING.
This is basically Sugamama with Penny
I love Love LOVE that you appreciate your adulting and the way you phrased it was amazing
“I’m trying to celebrate even my small victories!”
Keep appreciating you. A woman that appreciates herself will be more successful and happier in life
In the first episode of S2 Sugar Mama said Penny's friends are faker than the ones Wizard Kelly hired.
I'm looking forward to the Louder and Prouder re-sequel(?). I really hope Penny finally gets the home girls she always deserved.
@@bailey3015 IIRC they are blue as a stylized way of showing they are ashy.

18:19 *Penny:* We need someone to stir the pot in this show or there wouldn't be a plot. We are only friends to entertain the folks at home.
I watched the whole series last summer and I could see a lot of unfavorable moments. I hope that this can all be rectified in the revival though.
Agreed. I hope the revival is much better because there were a lot of moments that were a huge miss for me.
Djonay was always a fake friends. She always showed her true colors multiple times to Penny, and Penny continuously ignored the signs. She kept being friends with Djonay and falling for her Bs.
i just think penny deserve better friends that are always supporting and staying for her. penny's friends are the worst people in her life.
Dijonay a whole opp, she flipped on penny so many times
Honestly, all the characters in that show were shitty, trashy people. Oscar was the best of them, but suffered from Dopey Dad Tropism, Dijonay was the absolute worst character though
i hated dijonay every time she was on camera or a scene showed her being a crappy friend i wanted to change the channel to rocket power
I'd at least argue that Sticky was a pretty chill dude on balance.
You know it’s bad when even your opps treat you better than your “bestfriend”
I think the kids acting bad and things like that is an homage to Bebe's kids which was a movie that the creator of the proud family either directed or did the animation of it. I mean Penny did a reference to it when she said "Bebe's kids." in the movie Bebe's kids were a bunch of badass kids because their mother Bebe couldn't take care of them because she was working or just gone all the time. So yeah just some 2 cents :)
Do you think when they finally go through with the reboot, they’ll address this? That just because you call yourself a persons friend doesn’t mean that you are allowed to treat them anyway you want to?
Honestly I think they won’t address it at all and just make her not be as horrible to penny

Dijonay: You came back for me Penny!
Penny: Yeah, I thought leaving you outside wasn't punishment enough. I need the type of catharsis that only violence can provide!

Neat series, Bad TV Besties! I'll have to check out the Doughty episode
I’ve noticed that horrible friend trope in other older shows as well. For example, Patrick Star from Spongebob. Animated Atrocities has a whole slew of videos on that.
Found you at 525 subs and see you having 50k by Fall 2022 🥰 love your channel
Hopefully the reboot fixes Dijonaise issues
This why Suga mama tells penny to ditch dijonay
True
LaCienga takes 2nd place for shit friend
And I think part of the reason that about her that pissed me off so much, was that she knew how to manipulate the adults into taking her side
Worst episode though was the one where Penny‘s baby siblings were wished into adults

Imai is so beautiful
There is an episode where Suga Mama advises penny that Dijonay is no friend! Lol
The first episode lmao
Imai would have been a little kid when this aired and was first in reruns, which is why the Peanut Butter and Jelly Time scene and the kids acting Ministrel like would have been funny, but as an Adult realized how ignorant this and insulting the scene really was. I'm significantly older (I'm 16 years older than her and I found myself frowning as she revisited the Peanut Butter and Jelly Time scene and this scene seemed funny to me when I was about 18.
I don’t like how this show normalized for a black family to be so dismissive and abuse, especially for black kids watching.
This is hilarious lmaooooo
I hate how the proud family glorifies and normalizes abuse and adulification. Like that shit is normal and you just Gotta deal with it and turn the other cheek like what the fuck. When I was little I literally thought that. Shit is normal because if it wasn’t the show would’ve made that clear. It’s abusive for your parents to saddle you with nine kids or two toddlers at the last minute instead of calling a babysitter. Like it sucks if they do it once but it is straight up abuse if they do it all the time.
Well around that time we was coming into our teen years. They were 8th graders do it was on par with reality
Not to mention how Turdy stay having Penny baby sitting her twins like she can’t take the twins with her. She’s the mom

Family. I never liked Penny's "friends" (Zoey was ok) because they were so fake and toxic, especially Dijonay. I remember Suga Mama telling Penny to drop them because she knew they were fake as hell. The reboot has made them ten times worse. The new characters aren't any better either.
Penny is saint to put up with such trash friends. I hope the new series addresses this.
I don’t know why she stays friends with them

@@atomic747 The criticism of colorism in the Proud Family has been something that has existed for quite a long time. And while I do think that there is a point to be made, I think it is also fair to keep in mind that there are more than a few situations where Penny herself was absolutely tripping and crossing lines.
