They would hiss sometimes, or try to move in a different direction, but clapping and steering them always worked. The cat herding was definitely filmed at the Alameda County Fairgrounds - specifically in building D (which was torn down two years ago, so that location is now a just a big cement pad). Herding cats was my favourite myth of all time, because anyone who has met a cat (and especially anyone who has seen multiple stressed cats in the same space) knows that it's not gonna happen, but it was enormously fun to watch them try. The fact that they had to pause filming and extract a cat from the wall was a perfect example of why this does not work.

This is such good timing because I have been going back through and re watching mythbusters; and I watched this episode yesterday, it is one of my favorites. Also, Adams right, they did cover the cat that got stuck in the wall!
I’ve been rewatching Mythbusters with my daughter and we just watched this episode and it was as great as I remember it. Now I know this has been gone over ad nauseam, but I still don’t believe that Adam and Jamie weren’t “friends”. I understand that they didn’t hang out or socialize, but there is no way that they just worked well together and that’s that. There are so many occasions that you can see them genuinely enjoying each other’s company, and that in and of itself is a form of friendship.
followup question from someone who is rewatching all the mythbusters episodes, did learning how to herd ducks also teach you how to get them to quack on command, so that you could check for an echo without having to filter out the other duck's quacking. (I feel like that really bugged me about the myth of whether a duck's quack echos: the only way you found to get the ducks to quack was to make them talk to each other, but then it seems even harder than it already was to find an elusive echo over the additional noise caused by duck number 2). On a completely unrelated note, I do find it odd looking through the old episodes that in the intro, hyneman got the voice clip for both of you, with the narrator's introduction of you being followed by jamie saying "I always enjoy seeing adam in pain".
My aunt was Debbie Pollard, the sheep herding expert you visited when you were herding sheep and she was the handler for Oscar (im pretty sure thats the dog she brought with her for the episode). I hope you enjoyed rolling your ankles in all the gopher holes lol
While cats don't have the instincts that herding normally depends on, they can be trained to respond to herding from someone they trust. EG: One of my childhood neighbors was a stone-deaf dementing cat who let herself be herded by the lap-dogs she shared her home with whenever she got lost (which she usually *'ANNOUNCED'* to the 7 closest blocks)
As an owner of Australian Shepherds - a herding dog breed developed in America, despite the name - nobody starts herding with ducks! Even with Indian Runner Ducks (a flightless breed often used by Stockdog trainers in herding trials), their instinct is to flee, not to group up and move together. Stockdogs start with sheep, because they naturally group together. When the dog and handler refine their communication skills and can work as a team, they graduate to cattle (larger, heavier, and way more dangerous). Ducks usually are the last thing a Stockdog in training encounters, to polish its skills and develop additional finesse and control; a dog must be more gentle and very careful moving birds (at trials, if you injure or kill stock, you just bought it). Most farmers and ranchers using stockdogs will not be needing that kind of finesse save when moving very young livestock. Ducks get used for training mostly because they are less expensive to house, feed, and need less acreage than even a small flock of 5 or 6 sheep. They also get used for herding demonstrations, because they don’t need a gigantic area for their arena, and spectators can get a lot closer, safely, than for sheep or cattle.
many scientists have declared cats will not participate in tests. In several studies a great number of the ones tested even go out of their way to be difficult on purpose it seemed.
@@SaltyVibrations Please get your hearing checked. Adam does not say "Nash'. There's a clear "y" sound, and a clear "ch" at the end. It's identical to her own pronunciation in the video you mentioned.
I've somehow never seen this episode of MB and it makes me sad. But at the same time, it was a foregone conclusion that it would be busted. Cats are the epitome of chaos. It's what gives them so much character and lovability most of the time. This was a great story to hear though, and it gave me a good chuckle.
One night I was awakened by someone dropping down onto the walk outside my bedroom window. They continued on to the back side of the house. I heard the latch click on the back door that had not been locked. Our Siamese cat made "that noise". The door slammed and I could hear the crunch of gravel on the path as the intruder ran away.
Cat inside a wall is so true. Our little baby cat managed to get outside unseen by me or Mrs mummy. Unnoticed until we heard him crying. The crying was directly under Mummy's bed. I thought he was trapped in the box spring. I looked and looked as Mummy was crying, " baby, my baby. Daddy, baby is lost but I hear him. He had gotten outside and followed the strays under the house. Out little Buggy found his Mums under-place but couldn't ring his way back to the place he got in. I went out side and he was under the front stairs and could not squeeze out. I had to get Mummy dressed and to the Backside door. She called him, he stopped crying and came to her. Mum and I have never been so scared sad and the never so joyous. Thanx, Cat Saviors Love the show & so does Nuggy. We're watching now.

I knew a farm hand who learned how to get cows to go where he wanted them to go, by standing in front of them, waving his arms and saying "Get the hell out of here!" and when he turned around they would follow him. He said he learned to use reverse psychology on them.
There is a subtle difference between, "herding," cats and convincing a group of them to go into a particular space. One is nigh impossible, the other merely requires a can of tuna.
My neighbors Irish herding dog will all tell you it's no problem to herd cats. She would herd my 4 cats from my open yard through the gate into her yard, take a nap with the cats, let them go back to my yard, then repeat a couple hours later.

Next to the mouse and the elephant it is my fav episode! Cats are predators, prey can be herded, predators not so much
Cats are lazy predators... Double trouble!
I still absolutely love that Simone Giertz and Adam Savage know each other! Complete legends, both of them
My aunt was Debbie Pollard, the sheep herding expert you visited when you were herding sheep and she was the handler for Oscar (im pretty sure thats the dog she brought with her for the episode). I hope you enjoyed rolling your ankles in all the gopher holes lol
Just wanted to say the A/V fidelity really helps with immersion, enjoyment and maintaining our attention. Keep up the high quality!
“Number One super guy!” :)
Very deep, cut. It made me smile.
Great, now I've got the Hong Kong Phooey intro stuck in my head despite not even thinking about that show in decades. Thanks, Adam.
Lead balloon was one of my personal favorites.
Could have been an idiom episode. "You own a dog and a cat owns you."
Dogs have owners, cats have staff
@@AndrewBlack343 The house is run for the convince of the cat.
many scientists have declared cats will not participate in tests. In several studies a great number of the ones tested even go out of their way to be difficult on purpose it seemed.
8 out of 10 cats disagree
Cat in the wall, eh? Okay, now you’re talking my language.
This must be Charlie Kelly’s favorite episode.
lol. The closed captions showed "herd" and "herding" as "hurt" and "hurting." Changes the whole story to something completely darker.
I love how on this Q&As feel so intimate. I feel like I'm sitting with Adam face to face and he is telling me cool stories of his life.
I'm still trying to recover from laughing so hard at the "Hong Kong Phooey" reference!
@2:05 I think you meant to say Simon Giertz not Simon Nash
Nope, IIRC that's how you pronounce Giertz.
Giertz is pronounced “yetch.”
@@zxcvb_bvcxz if you listen to her 'omg there''s a channel trailer' vid she clearly says it differently than 'nash'
@@SaltyVibrations Please get your hearing checked. Adam does not say "Nash'. There's a clear "y" sound, and a clear "ch" at the end. It's identical to her own pronunciation in the video you mentioned.
Simone, not Simon
3:10 A cat in the wall, eh? Okay, now you're talking my language, I know this game.
Hey Adem I’m a big fan and went to one of your shows when I was about 7 and have never forget it also keep being awesome
You have to send in a second cat with a string tied to it. They'll become codependent, then you yank it out.
First send in a bird with a string around its teeny tiny little leg
I'll tell you what must have happened, he flattened himself, went right through a seam in your wall.
LOL, "way against plausibility" = "new version of 'busted'," haha! I love it!
I've somehow never seen this episode of MB and it makes me sad. But at the same time, it was a foregone conclusion that it would be busted. Cats are the epitome of chaos. It's what gives them so much character and lovability most of the time. This was a great story to hear though, and it gave me a good chuckle.
2:48 how I look when someone cuts in line
2:46 is so perfect and yet almost cursed, it has me almost crying laughing 🤣
I have CC on and in 3:50ish there is a sentence "but we got to try hurting cats" instead of herding :D
I have been in a couple of similar situations when I had to tear out bits of the house to save a stuck kitty.
3:09 Cat in the wall, eh? Now you're talking my language
Thanx, Cat Saviors
Love the show & so does Nuggy. We're watching now.
Thank you for the signoff. Glad you're using your platform to support education even still.
dear savage, being at closer to 30, i most love how happy you look and act. watching everything when i was when the shows came out i can see how fast time gets, cheers to your happy organised very meaninful and inspiriational life. it would be awesome to meet you one day
Loving these Q&A!
You can herd kittens just fine but once they hit a certain age their curiosity stats skyrocket and their fear stat all but disappears.
Ran across this video randomly, brand new noice, also Mythbusters is one of my favorite shows
Just noticed the casual Mark I Iron Man Suit in the background.
Adam, you're amazing.
I knew a farm hand who learned how to get cows to go where he wanted them to go, by standing in front of them, waving his arms and saying "Get the hell out of here!" and when he turned around they would follow him. He said he learned to use reverse psychology on them.
Teachers say that teaching teenagers is like herding cats. There was a Superbowl commercial "herding 10,000 cats".
My parents old Stumpy tail blue cattle dog used to herd their white deaf cat around the edge of our back yard.
This is the kind of Media watching I needed right now. Wish this was done with Jamie and Adam together.
There is a subtle difference between, "herding," cats and convincing a group of them to go into a particular space. One is nigh impossible, the other merely requires a can of tuna.
This answering questions series is my favourite
My neighbors Irish herding dog will all tell you it's no problem to herd cats. She would herd my 4 cats from my open yard through the gate into her yard, take a nap with the cats, let them go back to my yard, then repeat a couple hours later.
