- 8 5th grade friends team up to show off their swimming "skills" at the school talent show!

As the mother of one of the boys, I can tell you there were no "winners" at our school talent show. It was a show that was just for fun! Lots of precious kids with lots of talent! Our boys just decided to do something a little different and have a lot of fun in the process! Thanks for all your sweet comments! Glad it is making people laugh!!

You say there were no winners as if it's a great thing. There is nothing wrong with having a winner at a talent show. I bet that kid that stabbed the 16 year old girl in Milford, CT yesterday was raised with the mentality that every kid gets a trophy. No losers. All winners. No failures. But you see kids have to learn how to deal with failure. When the girl says no to your prom invitation you can handle it without stabbing her like the kid did yesterday. I know we think we are doing our kids a favor by shielding them from the great trauma of losing. But we are probably doing more harm than good. I did enjoy the boys performance and I am glad your no winners show was fun for you all. But as a resident of Milford, CT grieving for a 16 year old girl who was senselessly killed yesterday I just had to reply to your comment.
As a mother of one of the boys, I apologize for your grief and you should know that sadness for today's children is felt all across our nation ( especially for that sweet 16 year old, her family, friends and community). My friend Jennifer's comment about having no winners was not at all about it being a bad or good thing. We have asked many times if the boys won. Our school talent show is just that....a show....not a competition. She was just replying to those type questions and comments and letting you all know this was for fun. I am a teacher and deal with the entitlement issue that our society is now facing, but I feel that is a great conversation to have on another thread...not one that is purely to help put a smile on faces of others. Like I said, we grieve with you as well and will hope and pray that the younger generations will be guided in the right direction. That is where we, the adults, need to step up and be great role models. Take care.
Thank you Margaret for your response. MoriahTrek, I too am sorry for your grief. My heart aches for the entire community of Milford and especially the family of this sweet girl and the other families affected. It is my prayer that they have a support system and a foundation in God that will sustain them through this terrible time. I agree with the things that Margaret said. I would like to add, that if there had been "winners" at our talent show, I would not have chosen our boys as the winners. There were much better displays of actual TALENT than what was shown through this skit. This skit was just something to have fun and make people laugh. The boys did a great job. All of the kids that were brave enough to get up on that stage regardless of their "talent" level and perform in front of peers and strangers ARE winners. I firmly believe in children learning how to be "good losers." But they also need to have safe opportunities to learn courage and the art of trying something new. That is what this talent show provided for all the participants. The "attention" my son and his friends have received has given them the opportunity to show the nation that not everything that happens in public schools is negative. There are good kids out there. There is some hope for this nation. And to me that is a really good thing that makes me very proud of my son, his friends and his entire elementary school.
MoriahTrek Your pain is not related to their happiness. Don't tear them down; it won't be able to lift you back up. Only time and healing can do that. This is a happy video, an escape from the real world, with attention on happy things, not on other, less happy realities. Call me harsh if you must, but I'm not okay with bringing down other's happiness just to make it about yourself and your pain, when you're doing it to force compliance instead of actually reaching out for help in an appropriate setting.
Jennifer this is just precious! The boys should be proud of themselves for bringing some laughter into a LOT of people's lives. And what a wonderful memory for everyone concerned to look back on later!
disclaimer: as a mom of one of these 5th graders, please know that we never claimed this idea was OUR original idea. We saw some similar videos on youtube and decided to take some of the moves we liked, then arranged them and added some new moves to make it the best for our 8 boys. Hats off to the people in those other youtube videos for sharing their ideas and providing entertainment to add some joy and laughter to someone's day! We are proud of our boys for displaying courage, humor, and personality up on the stage! They worked hard and they've earned this fun attention! I was stressing out so bad studying for my final exams just now, and I decided to take a break and check my Facebook. I came across this video and it made me laugh so much and put a huge smile on my face. Thank you for the video and great job to the boys in the skit!
These kids are talented and their performance is so much fun!
And that likely took hours of practice. It's not the dance. It's the synchronization that takes time, partly cause you have to have an outsider watching all the time, and commenting.
