The Time dammit show respect! These cats came around at a time in the early 1980s when R and B bands were fading away. PFunk had run its course for the most part, Cameo hung on for a bit but bands like the Ohio Players, Earth Wind and Fire etc had all but seen their glory days well behind them so The Time was a breath of fresh air.
Michael Alexander Wow Michael you really left an intelligent comment it's so true man and I was thinking as well how we had George Clinton Sly Stone Bootsy Collins and all those cats, but it was Funk with no seasoning when Prince showed up and the time they basically gave Los Angeles the Minneapolis sound snatched Michael Jackson sister up Janet Jackson and gave us a fresh new sound that we held onto forever! Prince wasn't afraid to put that pop seasoning on Funk that we oh so needed and educated us as musicians and producers!
Starr Company LA had that MPLS before it became a thing check Brothers Johnson I'll be good to you and tomorrow 1976 1yr before Prince even came in the music
thank you Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis 4 bringing us music all the way from Minneapolis! Thank you for groups like the SOS band Human League Janet Jackson and and so many more diverse groups very popular that no one knows that you guys produced. You guys brought music to Los Angeles and gave us our sound! cuz before you guys came in our lives we were jamming off of George Clinton Lakeside Funkadelic Parliament stuff like that but we didn't have any seasoning to our funk! You guys put the pepper and salt and everything that we needed in our music thank you men!Thank u mr. Morris Day You were a Savage back then no one could touch you!
One of my favorite bands ! I love @1:33 when Jerome gives Jimmy Jam a high five ! And when they breakdown the tempo @1:44 sounding almost like James Brown “ The Big Payback “ ! 👍🏾🔥💜
In fact it was a nod to James Brown' The Payback. Very few people listen with such detail, glad you noticed it. Actually there is an alternative version to the song that includes this breakdown section which was released on record. If you look for it maybe you can find it on TH-cam.
The time tore it up the og version, arsenio hall was the only place for African American artists to not only be seen.however also heard, arsenio hall was the mini soul train of late 80's and early 90"s
Mr Maxx He said He caught heat from the heads of Paramount studios for that reason. It was to black!!! Plus, He had alot of rappers on the show , which was very controversial at the time.
I was telling people who were getting down to Bruno Mars' "Uptown funk" that they had to check out the true masters of "Cee-oh-oh-elll" and send them this clip.
Have to say Morris does a great job of living a personality that is not his own. The "Morris" persona is basically how Prince used to imitate his father John Nelson and how he talked and acted. He built that into the all the music he made for the Time, and Morris perfected it. Prince's biggest mistake was not letting Morris, Jessie and of course Terry and Jimmy just take over the production work on The Time records after "What Time Is It?", imagine how huge that band would have been.
These my boys! I really wish they would tour after the pandemic. I would be first in line for tickets. Of course the original guys. I’ve seen Morris and his new band and they’re good but no Jesse, Jimmy, Terry , etc.
It's the funk right here, yeah we need some clarification here, we definetly need the quality enhanced, u got to do something about the definition, but I have no qualms with this jam, just turn it turn it out
How funky can shit get ...... I used to do this gig as a tech ....this album did not get the credit it deserved because ya boy "P"was not as involved as I so recall.
..what are you talking about? Prince had a HUGE hit with "1999" in 1982; it sold over 5 million copies and produced two top ten hits, to add to the top 10 hit from 1979 "I Wanna Be your Lover". Prince was already a star before "Purple Rain". The Time had moderate success with the two albums prior to the "Purple Rain" movie, but elevated to near-star status on the strength of that film..
Bruno can't do funk like The Time. However, Bruno and his band are bad ass when it comes to vocal performance. But I would go for The Bird anytime of the day instead of Uptown Funk.
Hey, Denise, I heard Jellybean, the drummer, is a real chef. So,yeah they did start eating on stage!!!! LOL only the Time. You can see why Prince said they were the only band he feared!!!!
just think if.....alexander o'neal.....would of stayed.....but jealous prince.....wanted 2 run....everything.....S/O....2 the...TIME.....and the MINNEAPOLIS SOUND....1♡
Prince had no reason to be jealous of Alexander O'Neal, that nigga wanted a car, house and some money before they were even signed to Warner bros. He didn't see the bigger picture and didn't care about the band
Prince was Dr.Frankenstein and The Time was the monster that he couldn't keep on a leash. A damned shame that he was such a control freak. He could have brought a Motown version to Minnesota.
In the realm of choreography that backwards strut in unison is a big nothing, but is sure is cool when they do it. AAHH! AAAAH! 😂 Jesse’s guitar is the answer.
They pull it off so well. Their choreography has the include the musicians so it works perfectly. It all blew my mind when I saw it for the first time.
Satch's Jam Room that's funny that you mention that song, Because Prince begged Morris Day for that song because Morris Day wrote it! Morris Day said if you let me be in the band I'll give you this song and Prince said okay! true story
Terry Lewis is killing that bass.
I cannot say enough about Jesse Johnson!! He solidified the Times Funk!

..it wasn't that good; that's why it didn't sell.
