‘Local elections matter’: Non-partisan Idaho moms saves school district from far-right takeover

- Just two weeks before the start of the school year in 2022, the West Bonner School Board in Idaho voted to rescind its English Language Arts curriculum citing concerns over “liberal indoctrination, sexual grooming, and critical race theory” - leaving kids without a major curricular requirement. The decision sparked Bonner County residents Dana Douglas and Candy Turner into action. Together with other residents, they formed a group: West Bonner County School District: Recall, Replace, Rebuild. The group aimed to recall the anti-public-education board members, but also simply to get their community members involved in local elections. “Little local elections matter, and that’s what really affects your life on a daily basis,” Dana said. “Nobody’s asking them to vote a certain way. We’re just asking them to go out and make a vote,” Candy added.

USA needs far more people to stand up for the Commons.
The far-right activists are evil but not stupid. Those little local school board and local representative elections are easy to win by a handful of votes, and can make a huge difference to communities. Plus, people who are paying attention to local races are bound to become better informed and active about voting generally. Glad these women are fighting for Idaho and getting other people involved and registered and voting!

Fascism is _far more uncomfortable_ than actively participating in politics to protect democracy.
It's about time this story got some national attention. People should be horrified about what is going on in northern Idaho and Idaho in general. They are trying to start a separatist society that has no public education, no female reproductive rights, and old west justice. They will dismantle public education one school district at a time and won't stop there - they will ultimately go after the state-funded universities.

Informing them rather than restricting them tends to give them what they need to make better choices without rebellion. They're polling registered voters, not likely voters, oversampling Republicans compared to their proportion in the population, and oversampling older more conservative people who can still be reached on land lines for long questionnaires. During Trump’s presidency seven wars started.

By weakening the alliance, hostile nations are encouraged to attack countries they’d like to bring under their control.
Trump and Jared’s clumsy “diplomacy” and business deals in the Middle East strengthened some of the more vicious authoritarians, MBS and Netanyahu, and abandoned Iran by pulling out of the effective nonproliferation treaty and ignored Palestinians, leaving the region unbalanced. The Hamas attack was inevitable.

I once had an employee who refused to walk 10 feet to her precinct (It was a small town and both precincts were in our office building). Her family had brainwashed her to believe her vote wouldn't matter because someone else's vote would cancel her vote. I don't understand why anyone would register to vote and then not vote, and not use their ballot choices to make a difference. It's a sad state of affairs when there is less than a 50% turnout for elections - the minority is making the choices and then the majority complains when things don't go as they think they should. If you don't vote you have no right to complain.
