I'm so thankful I got into mixing in the era of youtube. I've only really spent the las 6 months or so learning how to mix and my kicks kept getting lost in the mix because I haven't until now really focused on balancing. It's a fun journey. Thank you for being part of it.
You are a really great teacher. Really quality information. I've been in radio for the last 20 years. Radio is all ABOUT getting people to stick around. You mentioned your retention numbers. You can improve the retention with teases. Tell them something you're going to show them during the video. Example: stick around because in the next few minutes I'm going to let you know the number one question aspiring producers ask me. It's crazy. You're videos are
Your cat agreed on the peaking from the atmosphere! Great tutorial, Alex. Keep up the good work & I'm looking forward to the next video. Greetings, Emiel.
Seriously Alex, you don't know how much you help us artists man. I'll name one of my songs after you; AR. It'll have a double entendre.. but the real ones will know!!! Thank you!!💜💜
So for the last 3 or so years I've been dabbling in music production and within the last year really been devoting all of my free time to exploring this! I always could tell something was missing and I believe this is one of those ingredients! Thank for the vid, and yes, I watched to the end!
bro im super grateful for this tutorial because i had a track that i could tell needed mixing and this is going to help my good ideas sound their best. thank you
Nice explanation of balance in the mix. Please notice though. If you do use the true stereo pan pot option for stereo tracks. Notice your db levels will increase when you pan left or right. This is just due to the whole entire signal moving left or right. So you're actually never cutting or muting what s in the left and right channels. When you use the balance pan pot for stereo tracks. It's the exact opposite. You start to mute or cut stereo information out when panning hard left or right. Bottom line. You increase the signal more when you use stereo pan option but it's the best option.
Try this...set mono on the master ch...set all channels vol. levels down..then..add pink noise -6db to the master ch..turn it on...:) then...balance every channel solo.Start with the kick as Alex said...gotta hear the channel sound slightly above the pink noise. Hey Alex, please do a video for the base(808) levels before and after mix&master ?
Hey Alex, Thanks for the video man, I will take a lesson from a teacher who is looking to educate over a teacher who is looking to entertain any day. Way to keep it real man
Thanks for the advice on where to place different elements in the mix. I’m surprised that few people have seen this video. One of the most helpful I’ve seen.
shit fam i've already mastered three albums going thru hell doin the exact opposite process. you just saved my life. thanks man! keep doin this amazing work please
Just started producing this year am doing it been quite an experience. My beats always sound unbalanced though but I appreciate this. My balancing would be much better now
You need to be on Pre Fader settings first and then gain stage it. You need to know your input level and then balance your tracks to -12db. You are more than likely clipping and don’t know because you are in Post Fader. 😇 Let me know and I’ll explain
U have a good style of teaching dude. If u want the knowledge u gota go all the way. And that beat is prtty dame cool man.thanx for the knowledge dude. Peace.
@4:22 if you think about an analog drumset however the snare sounds louder a lot of the time and is closer to the player. So I think the snare might be able to sound louder than the kick drum actually.
Damn I felt like I could have took days off in between to do this. I'm always in effort to make a beat everyday. Without question, it's easy to overlook these highly important suggestions. Thank you Alex.
Could you do another video like that, but do the balancing before putting any eq and such? It should be the first thing after gainstaging, but the effects make it sound a little bit different :D
Hi Alex. That's all fine and good and for sure a value method for many people. I do think nevertheless you can't do such a video without even not explain the most important thing of mixing at all. Explaining how you achieve a perfect gain staging and what unity gain is and how you keep it constant during the whole mixing process, no matter how many plugins you will insert, is absolute essential. You should also explain why we do that and what and where the sweetspot of plugins are. How for example will you mix into a compressor, set up onto your 2-bus without permanently controlling those basic settings during your mixing process? Your advice is meaningless if this fundamental knowledge isn't understood. Cheers
I'm studying music production and I literally just told my gf next to me that I shouldnt be watching this video... Coz he didnt even apply any gain structure... Hes playing with the volume controllers that track will sound terrible when he bounce it to wave format
I was looking for a comment like this myself and I’m glad you guys brought up this point. I’ve never heard of playing with the faders for gain staging. You’re not supposed to mess with output volume is what I’ve learned. You need to gain stage with input volume. Of course that’s just what I’ve learned and that’s what works for me but I’m glad you guys caught this as well. I’m just a no-name producer with maybe 40 subscribers LOL but I have never heard of gain staging with a volume faders. I feel like a lot of people are being misinformed.
I found a way to make this fun for myself hahaha I love doing this for mixes but this definitey taught me more than what I was doing with this trick before thank you
Nice vid, good explanation. I think probably the most fundamental thing people miss with a mix down is gain staging. And a great place to start with it is pre-fader metering. Taming those levels is key to a great sounding mix down
Cool tutorial. Learned a lot. One suggestion that i have is that, instead of working on the intro maybe it would of been a good idea to balance on the chorus where most of the time all elements of the track are present 😊
Super tricky sometimes to get levels right. Just gotta feel it out and make decisions with your ears first, and most times what you see visually will reassure you lol
Alex Rome great stream yesturday dude. It was refreshing to hear some actual constructive criticism. My channel just hit 6k today and I have a pretty loyal following. People are always telling me how much they like my music and stuff, which is good and fun, but sometimes I think I don't get any real advice. In short, thanks for some great advice, I started producing from watching your vids and I keep seeing more and more growth on my channel!

This is legit the secret to clean mixes
Yeah "legit".
Not a secret, dude.

Thanks for the shoutout. Not only did I watch the whole thing.. I watched it twice because I forgot what order to bring things into the mix.
I do that too to touch my speakers for the bass😂👌🏽
I’m late, but this changes everything. Thank you
Love this tutorial man! Balance is absolutely crucial to a mix.
Seriously Alex, you don't know how much you help us artists man. I'll name one of my songs after you; AR. It'll have a double entendre.. but the real ones will know!!! Thank you!!💜💜

So glad I came across this video
this is life changer
Thank you so much for making this video, mixing definitely is a struggle for me, so it means a lot that you took time to make this video! :)
what I should do with a 2 track beat downloaded from TH-cam ?
Could you do another video like that, but do the balancing before putting any eq and such? It should be the first thing after gainstaging, but the effects make it sound a little bit different :D
So much value!! Thank you so much man it really made me relearn the mixing approach!
And as you stressed, always mix with a fresh set of ears! :)
Great quality content! Learned a lot. Thank you.:)

I really needed this tutorial. Thanks!
Amazing Alex you are no doubt a genius
If the kick is touching yellow then what if you want to add compression or eq? Wouldn't the signal be really hot
backside what studio monitor you use??? Pls say

I appreciate this video ! I'd love to see a video on you balancing vocals even if it's balancing vocals to a 2track !
Is there a reason why you didn't balance the mix in mono?
You R Amazing Bro ☺
Good stuff. You should do a video o EQing.
Nice brother, please teach us about panning
Great video, very helpful please make more 👏
dude thank you so much, I'm a new producer/engineer and this was super helpful
Please do you do this after you have added all your effects??or you this before adding effects??
Really helpful! Thanks for the help Alex!
Well done, subbed!

Helping me out to this day man appreciate the video 🤙🏽
You can use headphones to check the low end
Ur the best alex
Never tried actually feeling the cone lol gonna try that
0 is correct level of a balanced mix. you must gain stage to keep that balance correct. the key is gain staging.
how loud shoud the vocal be if there is a vocal?
Hello
What is the name of the program you are using in this video?
Shouldn't this come after eq'ing? Once you start to cut or boost it will change the balance again.
Should we level in stereo or mono?
At what point in this process are we supposed to use a reference track?
Lit bro. I sat here taking notes the entire time :)
Excellent tutorial on levels!!!
FIRST OF ALL....WE BRING UP SPEAKERS VOLUME OR DAW VOLUME? (BEFORE EVEN STARTING MIXING)
I want to follow the simple strategy of Rick Rubin. I don’t want a lot of sounds, I want few sounds that do a lot.
