Nagato was fucking-amazingly written dude. It's quite interesting to watch any flashback about him. Same with Itachi, Obito and Sasori btw. These are imo the best written characters in the whole series. I could add a few more outside of Akatsuki tho, e.g, Kimimaro (wasted character yet let his mark) and Sasuke himself, although some hate and brand him as "emo" XD.
The Akatsuki were the best villains in any anime or movie I can think of, depth, character, purpose, triumph, loss, really cool stories with some tragic endings. All in all they all contributed to make Naruto such a legendary timeless show. RIP

Even that a lot see them as bad people I really feel sad for them especially Konan ,nagato Itachi and sasori They see them as villans but Akatsuki fans see them as good people who suffered in the past
