Having seen some comparisons there is a fairly significant difference in sharpness between different versions of the Helios 44. Another thing to consider is that some have smooth aperture rings and others have "stepped" aperture. My two 44-2s are smooth while my 44M-4 is stepped. Build quality also varies considerably. Older models tend to have better build quality (my 44-2s from the early 80's are ok, but many from around that era can be loose and sloppy. Oil on the aperture blades is also an issue, so look for one that is clean (or have what you buy cleaned I guess).
But they are still great lenses and all give the swirly boke. Just realise that they are old lenses with a lot of variability.
I agree you really have to get lucky for a good one my 44-m is kmz not to good but my 44-2 kmz is perfect

I have the lens but the KMZ metal body BUT not that anamorfake look mod they usually do. Great lens.

I thought the helios 44-2 was wide screen, its not. Its just a bokeh.
Yeah, it’s not wide screen being that it’s a spherical lens, but you do get more than just Boca. The compression in the image is very distinct
@iamRickBonilla_ well you definitely have some amazing footage. I bought a projector lens years ago to do anamorphic with a 50mm it's very heavy though, i might try rig it up now for the helios for in studio shots. Keep up the amazing work 👏
