That clicking noise is the camshaft driven high pressure fuel pump for the direct injection. It's a mechanical unit, the noise starting up is a dry start which is normal for these vehicles. They are really bad about dry start ups.
@@rogepunzalan Really nothing you can do about it, it's normal on these vehicles. My wife's 2012 Traverse has 245,000 miles on it and it's done it since new. I am not a fan of the V6 engines in these cars, they make a lot of noises on start up with the cam phasers and that mechanical pump. Just use a high quality synthetic oil and keep up on your maintenance.
My 2016 Acadia just started rattling when I start it only. Never did it before , was completely quiet. Now rattles during crank then sounds norm . The car only has 34,000 miles on it. I change the oil every 3500 miles full synthetic. Anyone have any advice? I might just sell this and buy a toyota.
I was told mine needed a new timing chain and would require pulling the engine which was very expensive. They also suggested that for only $1000 more I'd be better off having them drop in a whole new engine. I'm just going to drive it until it dies.
The clattering noise is the camshaft actuator which I verified with a scan tool which showed an extreme angle on one actuator right at the point the noise could be heard, which didn't appear until about 2 seconds after the engine was started. I had the cold start clattering noise in an 08 3.6L that seemed to be linked to oil drain back. I replaced the 5W30 with 10w40 a higher viscosity oil particularly at start up and have not heard the noise since. These motors are hard on oil and with 5w30 the noise would appear at about 3000 miles on the oil. This is a common problem with this engine and still is even in brand new 2017 vehicles.
Ok. Thanks. I had replaced the cats and the mechanic hesrd the noise at startup. He also said go to 10w30 cause its common on these cars and said its quiet the vehicles that go to his shop. Thanks.
+Craig R hi OP would you be so kind and follow up on this video? Have you ever discovered what was the problem? Mine's doing the same thing, down at chevy dealer they told me it was timing chain. So i replaced it, didn't do jack..
As a technician for gm, I can tell you they all do it. Especially if they sit for a few days. The 3.8l has always done that, but it's not something that will need to be addressed.

I hate when people post issues by video and never follow up when its resolved. Was it a tensioner or not?...
I had no idea anyone replied to my post... They changed the timing chain and the issue went away.

May be actuators. Heard of them going "bad" and locking up or not working properly, associated with timing chain issues....
Might be the timing chain

My 09 Traverse is making the same noise
Sounds like you need new timing chains. Better fix that quick before they break in there and really fuck up your engine.
They changed them and I haven't had the issue since.

Mine does a little ticking its normal for these . But not like this one on the video.
What happened?
Did anyone switch to 10w30 and see a difference. Mine makes the same sound
I put 5w30 synthetic 4quarts and 1 quart if lucas synthetic and still makes that rattle.

Just like the rest of GM's 3.6L, needs timing chains, guides, and tensioners. Noise will be gone. 👍
Thanks for the reply! They ended up putting new timing chains on. Not sure about guides and tensioners, but it has since gone away.
Craig R Glad you got it resolved. Unfortunately, its common on every GM application with a 3.6.
I had my timing chain and kit replaced, noise is still there
