Maybe Sharepoint, specifically online, will turn into just a tool for presentation and collaboration and ALL data is connected to a data store elsewhere? It would be nice to separate the two, connecting to db's free of choice - but not with a lot of work.
Interesting point, but I doubt this will happen. The whole idea of SharePoint is that you rely on its core features for document management, retention, etc. But who knows!
