    I think most people in Nashville knew the song was about "Hank" as soon as the steel guitar played the "Derryl Derryl" . Great tribute to Hank, Don Helms, and the Drifting Cowboys.

    Love this song. It's actually the ghost of Hank Sr giving him the ride. First time i heard it that revelation was like a smack in the face.

    Riding with the ghost of Hank Williams. First hint: "Now he was dressed like 1950, half drunk and hollow-eyed". Then: "Then I noticed the stranger was Ghost-white pale when he asked me for a light And I knew there was something strange about this ride". The Hank David sounds like is Jr. Sr. had a higher pitched twang kind of tone to his voice.
    "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" was a commercial success for David and a barroom sing along, but I think I like "Willie, Waylan, and Me" as much as it and/or "The Ride". David was capable of writing both touching and outrageous lyrics. The latter probably hurt his acceptance by "the industry". He refused to fit in and yet resented not being accepted.

    Great song, great score! Any lower and I would have had to seriously question your sense! :-) Mr. Coe is truly a living legend...born in the 30's...he's seen it, he's lived, and he sang about it. Being a true outlaw...he does have some critics. Yeah, some of his stuff could be called sexist, racist, homophobic, crude...do I need to keep going? Bottom line, he makes damn good music and makes no apologies for how he does it!

    • @smalltownblackouts

      "Could be" is coming up short. Coe is a racist, mysongistic, homophobic, shitbag of a human, but "The Ride" is one of the best songs ever written

    The reason Hank turned the car around “just outside of Nashville” is because he was fired by the Grand Ole Opry back in the day and resented the industry. His drinking and prescription drug use caused him to miss too many shows. He ended up playing on the Louisiana Hayride (lesser known Opry competitor) in his final years.

    • @AussieGirl235

    I live 10 miles north of Montgomery Alabama. Every time I hear this song it gives me chills. I seen him in person about 10 years ago. His health was not great but that song still brought the house down. Hank Williams Sr. is an icon here in Alabama. Georgiana ,Alabama still celebrates him every year . From time to time has some really good artists.

    I think this song is one of the best ever written. I mean to think that Hank William's ghost is traveling the highway taking the next generation to Nashville is haunting and true, because he has influenced every country artist, but he can only take you there, the rest you have to do on your own, amazing!!

    • @beegee1960

    • @lanepotts1046
      @lanepotts1046 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not only that he was one of the first to make meaningful lyrics to music before his era music was just background music especially in country music only like 1 or 2 singers had experimented with that kind of sad meaningful music and then all of a sudden lovesick blues comes along and then all of a sudden everyone is listening to that kind of music

    Yeah, country songs are sometimes pretty clear and sometimes they are so subtle that you have to really LISTEN to get the story because if you miss the story you miss the song. Period. "You don't have to call me Mister, Mister. The whole world calls me Hank." Iconic lines. Loved your reaction to this.

    My take on it was the long ride to Nashville was made easier by Hank driving him. Same was as how Hank and his influence made the music so popular that it allowed Nashville to flourish

      @Christopher Pack I'm still learning! And the cool thing is when I turn some of the folks who follow the channel onto a song or artist that they've never heard before, since most of the folks who follow the channel have been longtime country fans.

    i do believe that’s Mr Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughn and double trouble) on keys... he’s played for many of greats... Btw... Though i don’t see him on this live set, Mr Warren Haynes (gov mule/Allman bro band!) was his touring lead guitarist... Feel free to correct me if i’m wrong on reese waynans....

      @Johnny Fox Totally legit question. I didn’t grow up on country, as I didn’t get into it until about ten years ago. But I was into Nashville country. When I was taking care of my mom in Florida in her house after she got sick. I had time on my hands and decided to start a TH-cam channel doing Nashville-country reactions. Soon after starting the channel folks realized I liked lyrics and they started suggesting traditional or red dirt country. So artists like Coe were new to me because traditional didn’t make its way into my life until about three years ago. My reaction to The Ride was soon after that. So there’s the story.
