Thank you for posting this. I am visiting my mom who is enjoying her condo at 96 but kind of in hospice here and she has a trash compactor that never had power and just used it as a trash can but the foot pedal broke and now the drawer will only open an inch and so I've been trying to figure out how these stupid things work and most of the instructions start with take the drawer out which I cannot do. I can barely see inside but it looks like maybe the ram is lowered but since this thing has no power I don't understand how that could have happened. So you're helping me try to figure it out. It seems dumb to try to get it repaired since it never compacted trash but there is a bag stuck inside there! Haha. If I could get the face off at least I could see inside but those screws don't seem that handy. Anyway you did help me a lot. Elizabeth

Wow, they're expensive. How do you ke err p them clean? Do they smell when you remove the compacted food?

I appreciate you posting this. Moved into a house where the compactor wasn’t working right, sounded like it would go on by itself which I know sounds weird. It wouldn’t cycle when you tried. What fixed it?
Took the key out, which I had no idea nor would I ever have tried. Pulled the switch out, blew out debris and it works!

Thanks! Had a compactor growing up and was always curious how it worked internally :)

Thank you! I tore mine down the same way for testing. The motor will not reverse when hitting the bottom (or pressure). Not sure if this logic takes place in the whole motor assembly or if it is a different part. Any idea?

That switch happens in the motor, order a new one and you should be set

However actually, our mode switch, the one you turn to make it go has gotten sticky and doesn't return on its own. You have to manually turn it back the 1/8 turn to have the process be automatic. I'll order a switch one day but we have gotten used to just turning it to compact then immediately turning it back to on

@@Revvedupadventureclub I saw something else called the "directional switch" located up in the control area. You think that may be the controller of the "time to reverse" logic? I'm actually enjoying figuring this stuff out :)

@@Revvedupadventureclub ^^ I think this is it. ^^ I bought a multimeter and used with help of your other video. There are 2 directional switches (WC21X20108). I tested both and one seems to have resistance whether or not the switch is triggered. Not sure why there are 2 switches. One is wired COM and NC. There is a NO prong, but there was nothing attached like the other switch has (all three). I assume this is by design and will replace this switch into the same configuration. Thank you so much! This compactor has not worked in years. I will be so excited to use it again. Yes, it's the little things in life :)

Would like to know where you bought the motor and a part number!

I just searched appliance repair parts. There are a number of large warehouses where you type your individual model number in and search the part you need. You got this!

Um...so why are they like two THOUSAND dollars? They're like 3X the price of my new Bosch dishwasher and all they do is mush junk.
    I'm like, I'll just install a compactor for 400 bucks and...WTF?

my trash compactor will run perfectly if i give the chain a little nudge. sometimes it will run 2or3 times then i have to nudge the chain again?

sounds like the motor (commutator) is worn out.order a new motor and swap it out would be my course of action

We have a Whirlpool and it does not compact well at all. The one we had years ago would smash cans. This one can't even smash a milk carton. I wish I knew how to make it work better.

This wouldn't be how you came up with the school bus table movement would it?

I would suspect so but have not tested, it will break glass jars no problem
