I love it that much, too. Paul is my idol, when it comes to this sort of stuff.
Do you play it on cornet or trumpet? I play it on both - and I prefer cornet for this repertoire.

Steve, thanks for your kind comments and for asking a very good and important question regarding breathing. You're right, I don't take or use much air because I use a low flow/ high resistance technique across my entire range. Due to the configuration of my physical technique my general level of compression is higher than most players but my top lip is very relaxed which allows maximum resonance and therefore increased amplitude. It's unconventional but most of what I now believe and do is!

Unless they had multiple cameras, they recorded this in multiple takes and edited together. Still a great player no doubt but he didn't play it like this all the way through.

Freddy Shumakerr while no one will say that Paul Mayes is a mediocre player by any means, I seriously doubt anyone could do the entire first part (till 00:34) without a breath. Are you 100% certain this wasn’t edited?

    • @lukejohnston363

@@meat. I've seen people play pieces longer than this in one long go. Of course this person was using circular breathing

Thanks. If you like the accompaniments they are now available for purchase from BRASS WIND PUBLICATIONS. You get the trumpet & piano parts in full, a cd of the accompaniments played at 3 different speeds and my solo recordings of all 14 studies. Great value!

Thanks for your positive comments. Great to get this type of feedback and to know it's helping others in some way. Yes I'm preparing some more studies to post soon including 7, 9 and 11. If you ever get that feeling when you need to exhale before you inhale try panting about 10 times before you start - it's a technique I use often. I also get asked a lot about playing the opening 12 bars in one breath; truth is I can actually do it in one @ c=80 ! It's all about efficient use of the air.

This was my audition piece for my high school band in 10th grade. I ate, drank, and slept this tune for 3 weeks! And I can play it by memory even after 30 years of not playing it...although not to the level you play it. Fantastic job! You've helped inspire me to pull out the ol' Arbans book again!

@JimboJohnsy Hey, slow and steady is the key. I know everyone hates to hear that advice, I know I did. But until I heeded it I never got anywhere. There are some arban's excercises starting on page 77 that will help. If you slur them first then repeat and double tongue the same thing SLOWLY I bet you'll see some great results. The key with double tonguing is to keep the air flowing as if you were slurring. The tongue can't interrupt airflow that is not present. Hope that helps!!!

@Mouserninja No, no special fingerings. Just 1 & 1-2, only lifting your middle finger. If you tried an alternate fingering (maybe 1-3 for that D), it would be horribly out of tune. Just keep working on it, play it half speed and slowly increase until you're far beyond the normal tempo, then when you play it normal speed it will feel easy. Also, he plays this a little quicker than tempo, so don't feel the need to match him unless you're able.

Hello Paul, thanks a lot for your answer.
I am very interested in your technique.
I have started to play trumpet when I was 6 years old.
I think the zenit of my "career" was in 5th grade, playing
the first trumpet of Bachs overture, but then I was studyin science
and I just rediscoverd trumpet again a year ago. (I never stopped
totally) But now it is really fun again to try to play Arban and similar things.
I now look at the embouchure more with a scientific view and try different things...

@Arts0Music0Anime Arbans can be found in any music store really, or any music site. I got my for a good price form Amazon, about 30 bucks, which isnt bad for the book at all. And me myself, I can play parts of this, I guess like you, as well as Fantasie Brilliante (even though my triple tonguing isnt too good at all) and I play on a 5B it depends on your preferences, but my director moved me from a 7C to a 3C to 5B, and I used it for every ensemble and Honor Band I played it. Hope this helps!

you are correct, it is supposed to be an A natural for the turn, and that is how paul plays it in this recording. Also Will Strider, the trumpet professor at Tech, also explained that it was an A natural. Also for people looking at this due to all-region- in the second set of erratas released, it includes saying that the A is supposed to be a natural in the turn because reprinted versions do not have the natural sign. It is in the Arbans book itself though.

I agree with Ibanez3789 I used to double tounge with doo - goo really fast but could not gain much control, i changed to Ta Ka and i gained a lot more control. It depends on what YOU as a performer wants and needs to create a beautiful and full tone. Try different methods before sticking with one and you'll be right as rain!

For faster phrases, it is not uncommon for players to use the 3rd valve 'E' instead of 1st and 2nd. Although it does affect intonation, it isn't noticeable to all but the most precise of ears if played at fairly brisk speeds. At least, it's less noticeable than missing the note entirely. (That doesn't mean that it is impossible to play those E's with 1 and 2; only that the difficulty can sometimes diminish the sound.) In short, its really just preference.

Paul, this is superb. I point all my pupils to this video and have learnt a huge amount from watching/listening myself.
The main thing I take from it is to stay relaxed and not take too much unnecessary air in. The biggest problem I used to have with these studies was getting all stuffed up and having to release air before breathing in again. I'm not sure what 'low flow/high resistance' means exactly but to me just being relaxed is the no. 1 priority. Any chance of some of the others?

This is one of the pieces for Region in in my area. If I need any references to the music, now I know where to come.
