Great video. I actually bought one today. Went into my local home improvement center They had them on sale for about $1000 of the normal price. A few mins later while looking around spotted one they had one that had a dent in the top. They then marked that one 1/2 price off the sale price so I basically bought mine at 2/3 reduction. Score. I think this will be a winner for GE

Only time something brand new to be on sale for 2/3rd the normal cost means it's junk and they are willing to sacrifice you and your hard earned dollars as a test rat. These units require way more maintenance that needs to be done way more often than GE recommends and they only handle a load of 15lbs efficiently anything more is killing the unit

That's a new one lol from what I understand you want to get the job done as efficiently as possible as long as it's done the more efficient the better. @@pamsweeney1171 I've been using this model for a few days. It does king sized bedding (more like 2.5-3.0 hours for something that big). Haven't done a throw rug, but I don't see why not. It's almost 5 cu ft capacity. I just did like 6 bath/beach towels, and it reduced the expected time significantly after it weighed the load, meaning it expected a full load on the "towels" setting to be significantly more. Probably fits 8-10 bath towels.

I’ve had this combo for a few weeks now. I feel like I’ve been catapulted into the future! There is not a day where I feel like I’m doing laundry at all. The real work is folding and putting away now. Ours got back ordered and the laundry that built up for those 3 weeks was finished in a matter of a couple days. You can run this at night, when you’re away, without worry of a dryer fire. Also your laundry is dry when you get back to it, so there is no wet laundry that still needs to be put in the dryer and dried after you get home if you put a load in before you went out. I have ditched my laundry schedule and just throw a load in when a basket is full. I keep a clean basket to pull the dry clothes into and it goes straight back to a room to get put away in a flash.
I will never go back to traditional washer and dryer. This combo cleans better than any high end set I’ve ever had. There are never damp pockets or waistbands, no soggy quilt burritos that need to be flipped and dried again.
The only load I had a problem with was a small load of microfiber cleaning cloths. They were plastered to the inside of the drum and both wet and dry. So I hit the rinse/dry cycle and came back to them dried and fluffy. I think if I put them on a light spin instead of high next time it won’t happen.
GE hit it out of the park with this one. It is truly a game changer. For anyone thinking it’s slower, it’s just not - embrace the freedom this combo will bring you. I simply do not have a backlog of laundry anymore, it is all always done.

Bought one of these while living in Japan about 15 years ago, also a heat pump model.
The driver for this in Japan is that there's no external venting for dryers.
We had it serviced about 6 times in 4 years, and the warranty paid for a full replacement with a newer model.
The main problem was lint management when used in combination wash/dry mode.
We've moved back to North America and now only use it as a washer, and in this use scenario lint is not an issue.
Full props to GE for having a very large lint filter. This would likely have made a huge difference with the machine we had.

Even my thick towels and robes washed and dried faster in this than my old high end top loader because they for the first time didn’t make a wet burrito of toasted on the outside wet on the inside laundry that had to be flipped and set to dry a second time.

If it was any manufacturer but GE I would be interested. I had a 2010 GE Profile Refrigerator that had a circuit board burst into flames on me. Evidently there was a class action but not sure if GE ever followed through. If I had not been in the house and smelled the burning electronics it would have caught on fire. I'll give it a few years for others to enter the marketplace and to see if the performance of this product will convince me to risk my families lives with GE again. I'm also very skeptical about the lint not getting to the coils over time. The angle of access to the coils would make it difficult to vacuum them without damaging them. Thanks to Yale and team for putting up this video and for future reviews to come.

I own GE top of the line front load washer/dryer and adore them so I am very excited to hear Yale’s review of this new product! Currently, my laundry is in the basement, which means I have to carry heavy laundry down two flights of stairs and that isn’t as easy as it once was! We hope to age in place so this new GE Combo will be a game changer IF it lives up to the hype! I would jump for joy if I could put this upstairs near a water source and where my dirty laundry currently resides! I remember using an all in one unit as a 10 year old in 1970 that was located in the kitchen of our apartment. I was responsible for doing my family’s laundry so I would do one load of laundry at night. in the morning it was dry, and ready to be folded! That washer/dryer combo was the best because it meant I could my family’s laundry every night then fold before breakfast! By the way, at just under $3,000 is a great price point because the GE front load washer and dryer was more expensive when we purchased them in 12/2020.

I also have the GE set about 1 year newer. Last month I noticed the washer stopped draining. I pulled the drain pump and it was completely out of spec. Nothing was broken physically it was the electrical part. I put new pump in but it was still not draining. I had to also replace the mainboard. Mainboard had a blown transistor. Pretty sure that fried the drain pump. So not real happy with GE. The mainboard had I think 17 separate connectors. I never saw anything like that but thankfully it's working like new again. On a side note when it was under warranty during the first year GE sent a repair guy to replace the bellows (gasket) for a leak. I had to take the machine apart for the drain pump and the factory GE tech left screws out on the vent fan. I found some screws that fit and replaced them. Can't even trust factory trained repair reps.

Building a new net-zero and passive home, this is one of the most exciting products that we have decided upon. I am looking forward to changing the way we do laundry and not have to plan to move the laundry from the washer to the dryer. Having this as a heat pump unit follows what we are trying to accomplish with the house. This is such a brilliant step forward and such a major step for the all-electric home. I grew up in a GE town and everyone bought GE and they performed so well. I am really happy to be returning to all GE appliances for the new house. Many thanks to Steve and Ken for this great video.
Net-zero, passive, and all-electric homes are the way that homes should be built, but more need to be built for contractors to learn and be successful in reducing the incremental costs. This washer/dryer is perfectly aligned with environmental needs. We decided to have the entire design through building process filmed by The Build Show to create awareness. Build Show Boston.

With appliances like this on the market, are you tempted to build the house without any 240v circuits? I'm assuming no because of electric cars. But it seems tempting. I wonder if anyone considers a very large capacity water heater with only 120v and a scold guard. That would be great because it could get the water very hot when it's very sunny

"net - zero and passive" just become Marketing words when you look at the amount of energy used in 2 hours -> 13:15 for one, that's one typical load. I can and do hang clothes now and I plan and will continue to hang clothes if/when I move. Outside when possible (currently not viewable by anyone but surrounded by a flower/edibles trellis on four sides if/when I move). I also, regularly hang clothes inside. Do I own a stand-alone dryer now? Yes. Have I purchased an LG All-In-One that I plan to almost never use as a dryer or one-step washer/dryer? Correct.
Indoor Clothes Hanging sites can be designed surprisingly small when using all 3 dimensions and even make use of the HVAC System (a last stop before venting that air outside).
How "Net-Zero" are we if our landfills contain the Raw Materials that were extracted with devastating results? How better off are we if "Hard Goods" is a pre-Reaganomics economic indicator replaced with "quarterly profit growth"? And how better off are we when GDP (consumerism) has replaced GNP (manufacturing)?

Also, it's way lighter on the clothes. The other GE unit was very tough on things and cause the life expectancy to drop. Imagine seeing brand new t-shirts look old after a few washes! You could see all the lint and colorful clothes parts shoot out of the water drain tube. Another thing that's interesting to me with this type of unit is the disaster preparedness aspect. You could run this thing on a large ecoflow if needed. Wish I could trust the app, someday I'll hook it up with an old wiped phone on an IOT network just to do some updates. Good work! I experimented by selecting a lesser dry level on one load, regretted that I hadn’t gone for fully dry, and wanted to get another load going. I laid out each shirt (about 8) on top and they got completely dry just sitting on the warm unit.

If this machine works as advertised it will be a game changer! I have always said that dryers destroy clothes. We all have experienced pulling clothes out of a dryer that are so hot you can barely hold them and that extreme heat is terrible for clothing. The idea of using a heat pump is brilliant and I would not mind waiting longer for clothes to dry as they will be better cared for and also the power savings. I'm going wait 6 months for more reviews to come out and if everything looks good this will be my next washer/dryer for sure.

I’m not sure about this unit, but we recently bought (2) sets of Miele washers & heat pump dryers. After getting all of the settings set - and it takes a little bit, I’m loving the units; especially the heat pump dryers. It takes a little longer than our previous large LG vented dryer, but honestly not by much for medium sized loads. You have to set the controls to Extra-Dry, and you have to get used to the way the clothes feel when done. You’ll think shirts, pants, and bed linens are damp by feel, but once you take them out of the dryer and hang the clothes or get the sheets to the bed, they’re dry. It’s only a few seconds and it’s hard to explain it. Clothes sound come out of the LG dry but felt roasted. Clothes come out of Miele smooth, warm, and soft. It does get really warm. We plugged both sets into a 220v splitter (splits one 220v into two 110v), maybe that makes a difference. They do generate some heat in the laundry room, but it’s just a little bit of heat and no moisture. If the GE heat pump dryer works as well as the Miele, people will be pleased - but they may have to get used to the feel when the clothes are finished. They seem slightly damp but really aren’t. I’m loving them.

Your engineer has it right. You need to bring something to the market that people want. For me washing and drying is a commodity. It is efficient enough that it has little or no impact on my life. In the last two decades the cost and hassle of broken machines is now the number one problem for me. Taking 2 hours to wash and dry a 10# load while stating the EPA is happy is not even on my radar. I hope the product takes off and it is very reliable. A landfill full of broken machines with no, or very expensive reapir paths is not the solution. These things need to last way beyond 10 years with the mean over 20. It used to be that way, and it is a real environmental soultion.

A landfill full of broken machines...like the Maytag Neptune? Sure, keeping the EPA happy isn't on your radar. How about spending half as much on the dry cycle, putting a lot less heat into your laundry room which has to be sucked out by the air conditioner, and being able to do what you want for 2hrs without coming back to find a load of wet clothes in the washer that still needs to be dried?

From an analytical analysis perspective: Resistive heating elements use 5X the current at the same voltage to achieve the same heating wattage as a heat pump. In simple terms: A heat pump uses 5X less electricity to dry the clothes. So you'll see your electricity bill go down any time you replace a resistive electrical heater with a heat pump. The exact same thing is true when you replace an electrical water heater with a heat pump water heater. 5X less electricity is used to achieve the same heating.

I'll wait for real-world reliability info, but it sounds especially great for smaller spaces. Still not the equivalent of a separate washer & dryer, though; with separate units and multiple loads, you can "pipeline" the loads, drying a first load while washing a second load. With this unit you would have to wash and dry the first load before you can start the second load. If you wash clothes in large batches, say 4 loads, this machine would take ~8 hours, while separate machines could be done in ~5 hours.

Another channel showed for a load of towels, it took 3 hours and 45 minutes. That alone is a big turn off. Sure, it uses less power, but if you have to dry it twice as long, it's not much of a savings. And if the dryer breaks (as explained in the video), you replace the entire heat pump unit, not the broken part, great for GE, but not for me.

Hopefully the motor and all the duel system are beefed up. The positive things are the voltage is 120 , ventless and save space. A lot of Florida homes are set up with the water heater and laundry in the garage so that the heat from the dryer and water heater don’t affect the temperature inside of the house. Did GE custom make this just for me????? I just ordered one (couldn’t have done it without the big July 4 sale), I’m so excited to get a washer that works for me. 2nd floor laundry, duct goes straight up 24 feet, costs at least $400 for a professional to clean it yearly (if you have a vent like this you know how fast they clog) and most won’t go up on the steep roof, so I clean it myself and have to pull the dryer out of the closet (so bad, I’ve been thinking of expanding the laundry closet so it can be vented horizontally to the outside wall $$$!).
Besides that I have neuromuscular problems and most days just doing laundry is difficult. My top loader is so deep it’s a struggle to lift wet (and often tangled) laundry up and get it into the dryer. And the Whirlpool controls laid out in one wordy block with a dinky LCD screen are not intuitive at all, so I only use the app which means I can’t start laundry yet if I left my phone downstairs. What am I going to do with the extra space in my 64 inch wide laundry closet? Install a the laundry sink I’ve always wanted!
If this works, GE wins an old customer back that had migrated to other brands after the old GE quality wasn’t there anymore. I don’t want bells and whistles, I want function and appliances that actually make my life easier and free up my time.

I have identified that the fine lint filter gets a buildup over time that's impossible to remove, thus it requires replacement-- probably every couple years. Also found that the air exit from the drum has holes that will eventually get little rocks of compacted lint. Just pushing those out with a little screwdriver or toothpick every year is another easy routine maintenance thing that takes 5 minutes.

Most of the European washer dryers used water to keep it fluff free, they would inject water through the pipe and it kept it really clean, the water that condenses from the drying would go down as well. Had a Hoover Nextra washer/dryer for years with 1600 rpm spin, I had the matching condenser dryer and I would put the big stuff in the dryer to dry and would leave smaller bits in the washing machine and I dried so well, European models are smaller that that huge great thing, and the rule used to be that you could only do half load as there wouldn’t be enough space in the drum for the clothes to tumble and drop down but now with bigger drum sizes the drying size has got bigger mine was 7lg wash load and 6 kg drying load.

  • @robertdavis3122
    @robertdavis3122 ปีที่แล้ว +3

One of the biggest drawbacks I can see would be you can't wash and dry multiple loads of clothes as fast as you can if have a separate washer and dryer. That's because you can start washing your second load without having to wait for the first load to dry. That extra time increases each additional load you have to wash and dry. I can see where that could be a problem with a larger family. There would also be the issue years down the road when it breaks down, you would be losing both your washer and dryer at the same time. With separates, you would only need to replace one at a time since it's not likely they would both fail at the same time.

The "babysitting" would still exist if you are washing and drying more than one load. You still have to remove one load of clothes to start washing the second load. You also have to fold each load when they are finished just the same. When they make one that will fold and hang everything up, that would be wonderful. That's where most of the work comes from, not moving one load from the washer to the dryer. That part doesn't take very long and is pretty easy anyways.

I have one. It's a sealed heat pump system. All the moisture is condensed out through a heat exchanger and goes out through the drain pump as water. The cool air is then sent into a compressor where its heated, and then a fan blows it into the drum. Once the air is in the drum, the warm moist air is drawn back out where it passes through a 2 stage lint filter and then back into heat exchanger where the air is cooled and the water condenses out, and the cycle repeats.

Where the 30" wide home-size product will catch up with us. Based on what I see here in this video, The only thing this machine is lacking is a filtration system for the wash cycle. It would cut down on lint and fewer soils re-deposited on the textiles before the drying cycle. I can see with the "smart" over-the-air updates.....better chemical dosing programs and subscription plan chemicals delivered to the home are on the horizon. Customers are smarter and will do a better job of classifying types of textiles in the future.. Properly classified textiles will dry "quickly" If the lint is removed often and this machine is not overloaded...It should preform well. King size comforter?????? HMM will be wrinkled for sure. A down feather one will take a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time to dry. It is what it is. This is real game changer.....but not cheap. I can't wait to get my hands on one. $3K for a 5lb per hour machine is steep. It's a worldwide market and space is a real concern. I think if the front door gasket holds up and does not leak water on the floor......This machine is a real value for home users.

Non reversible door. That’s stupid considering it’s an all in one and could be placed where you typically have the dryer as well.

Ken, is GE doing anything about the well known faulty issue of the lint catcher? I have my machine on order and getting it next week but from the tons of videos online, there is a 100% design flaw with this.....

@@YaleAppliance1 come on…don’t be a homer…just look around. The filter up top allows a lot of lint to get to the coils…and we all know that will destroy the machine. It’s a huge flaw and if not addressed , I see a class action in their future.

Great review and this product could really work for us to save space in our laundry room and not having to stay up late to transfer a load. But I'm reticent to buy a first version of any new product as complex as this. I'm wondering how often a company like this takes to update their products? Given all the testing that needs to be done I'm guessing it's at least 2 years or more before a major update? But perhaps with all the consumer feedback from the first six months they could get some minor tweaks for next year?

We love this machine, but we do have to clean the lint filter after every single load. The sensor even prompts us to press the button asking if the lint filter has been cleaned with every load - even after Self Clean - which is a bit annoying. Also, the crevice tool for our Electrolux can't get all the way inside the lint housing because the it won't get in there when it's on the wand. There have been a few other issues, but overall, this Groovy Combo has been a life-changer! It would be good if you could provide some type of tool to clean out the lint slot that reaches all the way to the back. I clean the drain pump about once per week. Also, sometimes a few items bunch up and stick to the drum and have to be re-dried. Regardless, based on our experience since we got our Groovy Combo in August, I am blown away by it. My back also appreciates not having to make that transition from washer to dryer. I'm hoping it passes the longevity test. Thanks so much, Yale Appliance, for posting this interview. I stumbled across it in May and decided I was going to get this machine when it came to market. I gave it a 5-star review on the GE website.

If you have filled the smart dispensers with detergent and softener, is there a way to skip using those for a specific load? If my grandkids are here they use unscented baby detergents for their clothes. Or if I’m doing a load of bath towels I don’t want fabric softener on those.

    • @The-Friendly-Grizzly
      @The-Friendly-Grizzly ปีที่แล้ว

A further question: will the automatic dispensers put in the amount the detergent manufacturers say to put in? Or, the amount needed to wash the clothes and the rinse cycles rinse it all out? I use the amount the repairman says, that is, about 2 tablespoons or a bit more. Anyone’s thoughts or experiences? Thank you!

Now a lot of custom homes most likely are going to put in two draining systems for washers, so you’re able to purchase two Washing Machine’s, I’ve seen a TH-cam video of Dr. DuBrow‘s wife, laundry room. She has 2 sets of front load washer and dryer sets in her laundry room.

i bought one due to small laundry room when my GE dryer died weeks after warranty. i wanted a whirlpool but since this fit better in my laundry room i tried it. so far so good. i bought extended warranty in case. i actually like how it works.
the manual says no foam rubber in machine. now i am bummed. i can find no info on if i can wash and dry my bed pillows.
i will say bathroom rugs are the one thing i am still figuring out. takes a long time to dry even small ones.

I think the concept is great, but at $2400 inc tax and only a seven-year typical appliance life expectancy, that is $343 a year to own. For laundry use being once a week use, energy savings are nil at that point. I bought my SpeedQueens two years ago and never looked back.

I'll wait until they sell several thousand of them and the users provide their feedback before I change my mind about the all-in-one washer/dryer. I had one years ago. It was noisy, tiny, and very inefficient wheen it came to drying laudry. I'm not sure if it ever dried anything completely.

As long as you get 90 degree water hoses, there is zero clearance needed in the back. In fact, all sides have zero necessary clearance.

At these prices hy can't they design a reversible door with it, even as an add on item. I'm probably not the only condo / apt owner that needs a right opening unit for the space, Miele seems to be it for right opening.
