      Oh not at all I pre baited each trap it only took 2 or 3 min to set all of them and I am comfortable even setting them traps in the dark you just have to hold the traps with your thumb on the kill bar and there's nothing to worry about even if you let go of the kill bar it won't be able to smash on top of your fingers

      Instead of setting the trap and then moving to the next one, a half inch away, try setting a trap and sliding it out of the way from the others first. That way you don't accidentally trip the first one and get injured. And may us think you are an idiot.

      Agreed. Been battling a rat problem in my apartment for months. Put a Victor rat trap in a box from a waffle iron I bought awhile back after many missed attempts. Came home Monday to find it finally caught...with a wad of bacon and processed cheese and some kettle corn. Problem is now there's another one just as big. Pest control dropping traps off Monday...professional T-rex ones. Really hope it works or I'll be going old school with a box again.

    DEAD MOUSE or RAT... now what? This is a Quote From Victor "A mouse trapped in a Victor® mouse trap should never be touched directly. Instead, follow these directions:
    STEP 1 - Put on a pair of rubber gloves.
    STEP 2 - Spray the dead mouse and the immediate area with a disinfectant or bleach-and-water mixture.
    STEP 3 - Place the mouse in a plastic bag. You may save the trap for future use or throw it out as well.
    STEP 4 - Place any mouse-soiled objects in the bag including feces, nesting material or food.
    STEP 5 - Seal the bag. Do not push out the extra air from the bag, doing so may spread germs, bacteria or viruses that the mouse is carrying.
    STEP 6 - Place the sealed bag in another bag and seal it, too.
    STEP 7 - Throw the bag in the trash.
    STEP 8 - Wash gloved hands with soap and water or spray disinfectant on them.
    STEP 9 - Remove gloves and throw them into the trash.
    STEP 10 - Wash your hands after removing the gloves."

    I’m building this tonight. We have one smart rat that has evaded 7 different types of traps. Thank you
    Update: I followed your directions exactly. I baited the trap with ripe avacados ( because I’m in California) , dry cat food and sunflower seeds. The first 2 nights I knew the rat was going partially into the trap because the bait just outside the trap was gone. The third night we got that rat.
    It was a 3 month battle with 7 other types of traps. My husband even stayed up all night with a air rifle. This was one smart rat. It lived in the kitchen and would eat our fruit. Yuck! We have guests coming and needed to get rid of it. ASAP.
    Thank you for this video and this genius trap idea. Big Kiss💋

    Great trap idea. A suggestion... I have used the same mouse traps that you put in your box design. Not to uncommon for the mouse to eat the peanut butter( best mouse/rat bait ever) and run off. That plastic trigger sometimes will not release. To solve the problem, I tie a piece of cotton kitchen twine through the holes in the trigger pad and work the peanut butter into it. The mouse pulls on the twine... No more problem. Gotta go, need to make a couple of box traps.

  • @Tommyr

    Thank you 🙏. I moved to a new house with my beautiful beloved three cats, all healthy and rambunctious. Within two years all dead. After each one fell ill, I took them to the veterinarian, who told me, each time, ‘’that this cat had ‘kitty leukemia’ ‘’. After finding dead squirrels, 🐿periodically, for the next three years, on the street in front of my house, I finally put two & two together. My next door neighbor had set out rat poison to kill off the squirrels that had gotten into her attic. Rats ate the poison, came over to my garden to get a drink of water, my dear cats 🐈 caught them, ate them and sadly had to be put to sleep 😢☹️

    After using glue traps, I was broken hearted to see how cruel they were. So I got a live catch one. 1 mouse. Then a larger trap. Most got away, but I caught 1 and bought a nice pet mouse home cage to collect & keep them in, so I could let them go somewhere after I got several. The 1st time I tried to drop 1 into the mouse cage, the little bugger immediately bounced right out like it was made of rubber and rocket fuel. By then I had spent a small fortune and alot of time trying to be humane.
    Then I gradually discovered the damage they did to my place and everything in my storage room [and everywhere else in my home that was not immediately visible]. All my storage food ruined, with disease promoting poop and everything torn to shreds for nest building. They get into EVERYTHING whether it's food or not and destroy and leave poop, so you never want to touch it again. Got sick several times too, not absolutely sure from what though.
    I have a huge soft spot for animals, but now I HATE the little f_ers and feel merciless toward them - I just want them dead. We cannot live together in peace because they do nothing but destroy and contaminate every part of your living space, and I don't have much, since I live in a crappy old trailer. If they would be content to to just occupy a reasonable space, and leave me some, I might be accommodating, but they demand every square inch of your space. This is WAR.

    • @Pipsqwak
      @Pipsqwak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Martyn Saunders Having had a small bowel obstruction myself that required emergency surgery to save my life, I can say from experience that this would be a most cruel and agonizingly painful death that I wouldn’t even wish on rodents, as much as I hate them. Killing them instantly with snap-traps is much more humane. Also with traps you don’t have the sick and dying rodents crawling into a wall to die and stinking like hell for weeks as their corpse rots.

    Here's why this is so brilliant. It appears from this video and others by Frederick is that he's trapping the mice the "other way". That is, if you notice the mice's head, it's facing away from the normal entry path. That is, it's being smash after first crossing over the kill bar. What appears to make this so effective is that you can bait the hell out of this arrangement. The trigger pad is just a springboard to get to the bait. The rodent is going to put all his weight on the trigger pad to get past the trap to the bait. Frederick as totally reinvented how the normal mousetrap is supposed to work!

    • @tinaula8812

      WHY NOT JUST USE THE RAT TRAP ALONE WITHOUT ALL THE WORK TO SECURE THE RAT TRAP? ARE WE TRYING TO TRAP A RAT OR SAVE A RAT TRAP FROM TRAPPING A RAT, LET ALONE, MORE RATS...THERE'S NO ROOM IN YOUR TRAPPING DEVICE TO KILL ONE RAT WHO IS SMART ENOUGH TO SEE THAT...JUST BE PATIENT AND YOU'LL SEE THAT A RAT OR MOUSE TRAP ALONE IN THE OPEN CAN DO THE JOB ALONE, BUT ALL THIS OTHER WORK IS UNNECESSARY AND INEFFECTIVE MOST LIKELY...

    My dad, 70 years ago, after setting the trap would hold the trap with a pliers and hold it to a gas flame on our kitchen stove. It would remove all human scent. He would then, while still holding with pliers, place it where he wanted to do a catch, never touch it again but only to remove the dead mouse or rat. He used Victor traps back then also. Always worked.

    I can relate to your deer mouse problem. My mother had a real hate realationship with the common house mouse ( the Norway rat as well) and was constanly traping them in our hundred year old farm house. She had every kind of trap sold 60 to 80 years ago, one was a 4-way and she frequently caught 3 or more in that one. One night when we were around 10 to 12 years old, my parents had gone out for the evening and left my brother and I home watching the Ed Sulivan Show, followed by Bonanza. We like to watch it in a darkened livingroom when we happen to notice that we werent watching alone. A deer mouse had stopped in front of the TV and appeared to like westerns as much as we did. The deer mice I grew up knowing was quite a bit smaller than the white-footed mouse in your video, it was a pearl grey with just it's fingers coloured white and the tip of its tail. They appear as a round ball with not much length to them. He watched for a few minutes then disappeared under my father's chair. A few minutes later, came out from under, watched a few minutes of TV, then ran into the livingroom/front door closet. 5 minutes later, he was back watching TV again, then under Dad's chair. This was repeated several times and my brother and I became enchanted with our little TV watching buddy. It dawned on us about the same time that we had to save the little guy from mom. We hatched the idea to set-up our own V-trap out of a set of Encyclopedia with a paper grocery sac as the trap. We had noticed that he seemed to spend more time in the closet we waited until he disappeared in that direction. The V was quickly set up and we caught and installed our new pet into one of moms sealers with plenty of holes punched into the lid. The next day, we released him in the spruce windbreak to the north of the house and congradulated ourselves for having saved such a cute mouse with such good taste from mom's traps. The following Sunday, we were not alone again! Now I can't be 100 percent certain that it was the very same mouse as it had no distingushing features but as this happened no less than 4 times that summer, I would have bet money on it. In later years on having recalled this 'Summer of the Mouse', I realized that the living room closet shared a wall with the kitchen pantry and Dad's chair was up against the north wall, 30 feet from the wind break. They don't usually inhabit houses and any self-respecting house mouse would have had him for breakfast. We were probably returning him to his home territory or at least next to it as subsequent releases happen farther and farther down the windbreak, and he had developed a taste for the forbidden fruit - raisins.

I don't even need to leave the trap in the sun a couple of days to get rid of the smell of death... and their favorite food is sesame seeds and sesame butter.. the desert pack rats don't like peanut butter or at least know it's a death sentence to eat it so they avoid peanuts,, but sesame is irresistible for them.. Bulgar was second choice and worked best on the more suspicious pack rats that stayed back until everyone else was dead.. And then I found the hole they come through and haven't heard the scurry of little rat paws since... thanks for your video.. I like the Victor traps with the plastic plate the best...

    Love the music!
    I set a Tomcat rat trap outdoors, and placed landscaping bricks around it so that a cat wouldn’t get into it and get snapped in the face. The landscape brick structure was L-shaped so the rat had to go into the tunnel and turn right and then about six more inches to where the trap was. The next day, I went out there and the trap was outside the enclosed brick structure and a couple feet away from where I set it. Something got in there and pulled the trap out (which was also attached to a brick), and dragged it out. The trap was triggered, but there was nothing in it anymore. It’s a mystery as to what happened.
    I didn’t have that music playing, either! 😂

    Wow, thanks so much for this video. I liked everything about it -- the compassion and responsibility shown, the great music, and even the difficulty in setting the trap triggers. I loved that you kept that in there, because I've had a hard time myself, and to see a "pro" spring them made me feel less like a clumsy dork. I am going to build two of these, one for mice, one for rats (I think I have only one, but I've tried other traps and just can't catch it). I think I'll add two little tweaks to your fabulous design, and that is: (1) A threaded rod with wingnuts on each end to slide across the "roof" via those two little metal holes of the bracekts that stick up (keeping the lid down instead of putting bricks or rocks on top, and (2) putting a big metal "drawer handle" on the top middle so that I can just lean down and grab it and pick the whole thing up. I really like how this trap will not harm the pretty quail that walk through my bushes, and I'm hoping that even the rat size (with the side walls no higher than necessary for spring-bar clearance...such a good point), might keep out the red fox squirrel, although...there are so many of them too that if I have to nab one of those in order to get this one rat around here, then.. so be it. Thanks again.

  • @SeanWyseman
    @SeanWyseman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This guy is still learning. Taking live mice 1000 yards away is meaningless. I had a pair of mice in a caging system that bred into quite a large number of mice. One of the mice, the alpha, was killing other younger male mice so I had to take him away. I dumped him over 1/2 mile away to a field whereas I lived in a subdivision at the edge of the city. He not only found his way back to the house within three days he'd climbed back into his open cage and was living there with the door open. Mice will come back to where they want to be over significant distances. If you have a rodent problem take them over a bridge across a large river and take them a few miles away and don't dump them near anyone else's crops or buildings.
    Really it's best to kill them. reducing population helps everyone. Relocating just moves the problem to someone else's property. Bad neighbor policy. Use kill traps that are quick and humane kill.

  • @Pipsqwak
    @Pipsqwak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thank you - I’m going to try this. The wooden Victor rat traps are cheap, and I’ve got lots of scrap lumber. I was looking around for better ways to set traps in my barn and outbuildings, and all the commercial gadgets like electronic rat zappers and tunnels with traps in them are outrageously expensive. First things, first though - you have to clean up clutter and food sources for rats and mice or you’re going to have a recurring infestation. I put all my animal and chicken feed inside resealable plastic bags (like giant space saver bags) that I put in metal trash cans or barrels with tight-fitting lock-down lids. This keeps the feed fresh, and mice and rats dont chew through the metal. Never leave feed bags sitting out or on pallets. Get rid of junk and cluttter stacked up near walls. Plug holes in walls, foundations, or floors with hardware cloth or metal sheet, or stuff bronze wool around pipe openings (rodents don’t like to bite into steel or bronze wool). Cut shrubs and trees that are too close to your home or buildings, and keep your house clean. Put food into glass jars or metal canisters, and never leave human or pet food out at night. THEN, when you’ve done all this, set your traps. They’ll be hungry and more likely to go for your bait.

    • @Pipsqwak
      @Pipsqwak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also, I use 1/4” hardware cloth with a layer of 1” x 1” 12-gauge welded wire fencing over it on my chicken run. The wire extends from the roof down under the floor and up the opposite wall. The run has a solid roof. My coop is on a concrete foundation and the floors are 3/5” marine plywood coated on both sides with garage-floor epoxy, with no gaps between walls and floors. Windows and vents are screened with double layers of 1/8” hardware cloth. These measures have kept out mice, rats, weasels, foxes, coyotes, raptors, and even bears.

  • @markmccall6273
    @markmccall6273 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a smart solution. I've tried cages and sometimes the bait is gone and the door is closed??? Sometimes the bait is gone and the door is still open??? Apparently tying the bait to the back of the cage is a good option as the rat has to really play tug of war and guarantee triggering the door.
    Randomly placed snappy traps have also been very hit and miss.
    But, this tunnel trap idea seems like a great idea. Only one way the rat can approach it which pretty much guarantees job done.

    • @FrederickDunn

      Hi Mark, I can say with complete confidence now almost 3 years later, these boxes work absolutely. The only thing I've changed is that I've gone to the Made2Catch metal traps and have closed up the entrance to a 2" diameter hole instead of the rectangle that these have. Apparently you have to move the trap if you catch a squirrel (p. sure it was squirrels) because they come back once they find out that the trap feeds them, protects them from predators, and they even get let out in the morning! Rats are incredibly smart and require lots of patience and knowing where they are going. When you put the "box of certain death" out, they aill avoid it for a long time. I recomment putting the traps in it and leaving them unset. With plenty of seeds like sunflower seeds, and bait rats are eating. There is bait being put out by GoodNature that's called "NutButter" it has strong appeal to rats. Rats will standby and watch other small rodents go in and come back out. When they "think" it's safe, they barge in there and that's when you need to set the traps THWAP!!! problem solved. BUT, you need several traps out, several boxes. Then set them all in the same night for a complete kill. When those that don't get trapped experience the death of others in their pack, they often move on to avoid the situation. I wish you luck, nothing mobilizes me more than seeing full grown rats moving around the property.

      And THAT is one of the ridiculous aspects of rats and some other rodents, they climb right on top of a dead one and eat the remaining feed which is how we end up with each trap occupied by a body, AND rats come and eat the dead bodies to the bone! If I showed the activity on TH-cam, I'd lose my channel standing right away... pretty disgusting for sure, but it's all just food to them!

    It's always raining in those death scenes, amirite.
