    Be aware that GPA7 and GPB7 are output only according to the revision d datasheet. See article on hackaday about this.

      It took forever for them to update -- imagine the time lost on that issue...

    Very familiar. I used a SOIC version of this chip in my rpi2caster project where two of these MCPs and four ULN2803s control 32 miniature solenoid valves. And recently I used one in a VFD clock project... speaking of which, you could easily pull off a multiplexed display using a single expander and some driver circuitry.

    Always good to a few of these little expanders in the shock pile as they are so handy.

    Yes, I really like CotD, too! Already learned about a lot of nice chips from you. 🤓

    A very cool chip indeed. It is basically a dip on steroids. I love the leds since they are my favourite components. So many cool colours. But actually my 2nd favourite now after nixie tubes :-)

    I've used the SPI version and it is a very useful IC.

    A couple of years ago I saw video's where an arduino could drive one HPDL1414 display. With an MCP23017 I managed to drive 5 of them. If you like to see it working, on my "YT channel" there is a small demo driving the 20 characters.

    Would love to see a video on how you are reading from it and how you would potentially latch interrupts into the ports on it from say an IR sensor so that you can know that something has occurred pear does it hold status or buffer or anything like that

    I like these expanders, but I've never found one with the ability to use a different I/O voltage on the GPIO pins (vs. the I2C lines). I have had multiple situations where I have a 5V MCU that needs to interface to 3.3V (or 1.8V) logic circuits, and always have to add a level shifter in there. If a chip like this could take an I/O voltage to drive the GPIO pins, that would be sweet. In fact, having a per-port I/O voltage would be even better (I'm looking at those two NC pins on the package...)

      Something like TXS02612 maybe?

    • @riyadth
      @riyadth 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@neodimium Certainly a useful part, but it lacks the "I/O" expander capability. I'd like to use the 5V I2C lines of my MCU to access 8 or more pins of GPIO, and have those GPIO pins interface at 3.3V (or 1.8V) levels. The TXS02612 is primarily a multiplexer.

    I wonder how well it would work as a DAC if you put an R-2R at the output? 🤔 Either two 8 bit channels or as a single 16 bit channel.

    There's a M missing in the video title. I was like CPxxx, so a Silabs clone of the Microchip part, but no.

    Did you buy those LED boards or make them? If purchased, where did you get them?

      What about the other one?
      I was thinking of making a few of these, particularly to replace the hand made TH sized ones I used for Ben Eater CPU project.
