Pardon me for saying Alan!!.... don't look so serious!!... smile occasionally!!.. you do produce beautiful music & is very pleasurable to listen too!!... Thank You Sir!!.. 🙂
Thanks for listening Kevin, I’ve been told to smile on many occasions but sadly, I find it very difficult to smile and concentrate so I guess the choice is, smile and a lot of bum notes or be serious and make very few mistakes lol. Regards, Alan. 👍👍
What a lovely sound and so beautifully played by yourself. I wasn’t even born when this was released but can easily appreciate a wonderful tune. Timeless music
So glad you posted this one today Alan as I was going to Learn and Tab it tomorrow. Amazing that after 60 years we both think of it within a couple of days ! Oh well I have no excuse now than to do one of my requests Lol ! You played it great with the UB Hank BT.. Very much enjoyed.. Cheers Phil
Hey Allan, excellent choice this absolutely wonderful tune, in of the great tunes of that ‘Out of the Shadows’ album. You’ve played it very well, love the Strat you’ve got there 🎸. All Best, Michael
An excellent version of this lovely number from what is now nearly 60 years ago. I loved this track when it first came out and your performance of it has done it justice. A couple of questions came to mind. Did you consider using the 60NOS Strat rather than the 56NOS for this track? I always thought that the rosewood board produced a slightly 'warmer' tone on the 60NOS which fits this particular track and produced a more mellow top end. Secondly, having played that specific 56NOS guitar through my TVS3 I was never able to get the signal levels above the second red light, yet you seem to be comfortably in the amber region (which is where you need to be to get the best out of the TVS3. However your playing style and touch seems no heavier than my own. It looks to me as though you have the ''Level' control up almost to maximum - is that the case? If so, then that explains why. Hope you are keeping well. All the best, Ian.
Thanks Ian, glad you liked it. Congratulations on spotting my mistake lol, I did use the wrong guitar and for it to period correct, it should have been the 60's NOS, a rookie error I'm afraid. Regarding the 'Level', I did push it up towards the maximum to try to replicate the Meazzi 'break up' on the original track. I'm not a heavy player and although I've tried hitting the strings harder, I can't do it consistently, so yes, the input level is higher than the recommended setting to accommodate my playing style. All well here as I hope it is with you. Cheers, Alan
All I know is that Hank used a maple fretboard. We've compared maple and rosewood fretboard, and there is no noticeable difference. It is all in the fingers and playing style, and obviously, your setting on your guitar and amp. The only difference we could pick up is the feel of the 2 necks. There is also a few comparisons on TH-cam about the subject.
I am sorry to correct you but Hank used a Strat with a rosewood board on records from around May 1961 until he changed to his Burns in 1964. This is well documented across a wealth of specialist Shadows' groups and club sites. This guitar was used on essentially all of the tracks on the 'Out of The Shadows' LP. There is a clear difference in the tone from the pickups, the Maple necked Strat having a set of custom 1959's and the Rosewood a set of custom 1961's. It is particularly noticeable at the upper and lower ends of the neck. Indeed there are several excellent websites explaining the differences, most notably from the 'TVS 3 Speciality Products Team' who designed Hank's TVS3 effects unit which he has been using for the last 15 years or so.
