    I admire the way he was able to advise and move comfortably with high ranking officials and just as easily, survive alone in the desert. He was respected by the ruling class down to the lowest servant. An admiral quality. Thanks for all you do!

    It's ironic that Gurney, after thinking that Jessica was the one who betrayed House Atreides and wanting to kill her, ended up becoming her lover. 😍

      @hypatia8112 Leto II was perceptive as fuck so I kinda accept they being lovers but Leto I being the one true love of Jessica. In regards to him being more Atreides than Paul and Alia, it makes sense. Gurney experienced the Harkonnen horrors first hand and embraces the Atreides moral code while Paul became to influenced by his prescience, BG training and Fremen culture to be like his father. And Alia, well, she had the Baron poisoning her mind

      I think P.H Moriarty is the closest to the book's description. Although I can't seem to get any indication of how old Gurney is supposed to actually be. I figured that he was about Jessica's age. Older than Duncan but younger than Leto or Thufir.

    • @zemxxi2765
      @zemxxi2765 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Josh Brolin portrays him as a little too contemporary American in attitude. The strong, silent, modern day cowboy type. Patrick Stewart's depiction kept Gurney's dialect intact. But I must admit that a lot of the lines Frank Herbert gave Gurney would sound absolutely corny coming from Brolin who is not a Shakespearan veteran like Sir Patrick.

    Josh Brolin was woefully miscast as a troubadour. He can't pull off the dramatic quotes, so they cut most of Gurney's great lines, and the one quote he did sounded forced and stiff. 40yo Patrick Stewart, a tough-looking Shakespearean stage actor, was marvelously cast as Gurney. Josh should have been cast as Duncan. I felt like this Dune 2021 had two Duncans and no Guerney.

    Gurney is such a bad ass but the Baliset from the lynch's Dune was the coolest the one from the tv series looked more like a loot. Its funny how the series takes so much from multiple regions of the earth. A troubadour is as you say is a warrior poet from France or Italy, Bull fighting is from Spain and the use of the Bagpipes which is Scotland. The weaving of these cultures into the dune universe is unique Gurney is a very complex character the books unfortunately don't do him justice

    First time I saw Dune I was expecting Gurney to become a bad guy who blames the Fremen for what happened to his Duke and turns on Paul for "mingling with the inferior people". What I got instead was refreshing, not the same old "evil and violent military guy vs. protagonist who shows the power of love and tolerance". In life, you need a sword as much as you need a baliset.

    For the most part, I'm a fan of Gurney. I wouldn't want to call him a simple man, but I still feel like saying I like him because of how far a simple man can go, and climb, despite adversity. Still, he does bring me to wonder, was Leto actually plotting to topple the Emperor?
    So, a lot of the plot of Dune entails the Padashah Emperor, who finds himself in what could be the latter years of his life, without an heir, discovering that a powerful relative might be building an impressive force, led by very capable men, and fearing that these troops might be meant for him. Because of this, he chooses to destroy House Atreides, to defend his throne, and allies with the Harkonnen, but what was the truth, from the Atreides side? What was this army, and why wad Leto creating it?
    In order to move against any enemy; be it the hated Harkonnen, or the conniving Emperor, Leto would have to pay the Guild, and hope they wouldn't let it slip. When Arrakeen falls, we don't later see what looks like a remnant of this force; Gurney doesn't find, and lead them, and as a concept, they seem totally replaced by the Fremen, so what were Leto's goals? Did he take this army with him, and they just failed vs the Sardukar, and Harkonnen? Did Rabban spend two years killing any survivors?

    Going from the Dune 2 film.
    1. Why did Gurney surrender to the Harkonens at Arakeen?
    2. Why didn't the Harkonens kill him like the rest of the prisoners?
    3. How did he negotiate his freedom after everything was taken from him?
    This is my one criticism of the film.

      I disagree. I see it as a very natural act to do between them. Who else in the Universe but Gurney could understand and empathize with what Lady Jessica went through? Who else had the same honour and dignity of Leto than Gurney? Nobody else really would have been suited for Jessica. And since Leto died and was gone forever, but the two of them remained alive and still able to find what peace and solace I'm sure they could, in each other, actually makes the entire thing very plausible and I'll say very respectful. I'm sure Gurney could never replace Leto in Jessica's eyes, but they could have some happiness in this world and understanding. Plus I think Gurney would have seen it as a honour to his Duke to take care of and protect Jessica. Sure they slept together, but the beauty of being mature adults is that there can still be respect even after loss of relationships and not everything need be cut and dry. You know?
