Joyful and beautiful music of the heart. Had the pleasure of seeing a show and meeting them after. Croydon ‘87

I remember seeing this on Channel 4, cant remember , around late 80's early nineties, great performance and the best version, love the timing and percussive guitar from John and I learnt my slap bass in the early eighties with Jonas book on slap, just brilliant :-)

Gaston Lamarque saw that as well. Remember staying up late with the volume low so as not to wake the parents and recording it. Still get the same hairs on end every time.

I remember my dad telling me that he went to see John McLaughlin and Jonas Hellborg with my mum around this time as these two were the opening for Lee Ritenour which was part of a double bill at the JVC jazz festival. I can imagine seeing this in person must have been an unbelievable experience, it sounds absolutely beautiful.

what the hell is JM strumming in during follow your heart? normally a chilled 8+3 (4/4 and 3/8) feel but he goes mad in the bass solo... requires analysis!

The best version is by the joe Farrell Quartet. It has John M on electric guitar.

All versions are amazing. This (nylon guitar and bass), the one from My Goals Beyond (flat top guitar duo), and with Joe Farrell, playing electric guitar. Cheers.

I've heard and enjoyed both versions. First on McLaughlin's Electric Dreams album; later on Joe Farrell Quartet. Funny story. Until you made the link I never paid enough attention to realize it's the same composition. Thanks for the heads up.

What's Hellborg playing? 1 neck fretted, 1 fretless?

sowfast56 Nowhere. John did everything he could so that everyone forget about this. I'm sorry. He's just a Hag Bitch and he doesn't want anybody with balls in his presence if it's not just to piss on him to mark that person as his own territory. So sad but it's even worse than that. :(
