Congratulations Mikael on getting through the Oracle Certification Exam for Solaris. And so many thanks for your attribution, though I'm sure it is YOUR hardworking that really paved for your success. All the very best for all your assignmens.
I work for Oracle and is really strange... Is the first time I understand everything. all the training that are made by other people they do not cover this things... My compliments! hope you do more training like this! really thanks!!
That is so very nice to hear that you are finding the video tutorials in here useful. I used to work for Sun Microsystems, and continued at Oracle after its acquisition of Sun till the middle of 2015. I lived a passion in the Sun/Oracle classrooms and the encouraging comments from people like you are truly motivating. Thank you so much! My Oracle blogs are here: blogs.oracle.com/rajeshr . I have it in my ToDo list to do a lot more videos on Solaris 11 and I hope to upload some of it very very soon. Thanks again for all your encouraging and kind words!
Thank you Rajesh! I spent weeks and weeks configuring an ai server on a virtual-box. I get stump on deploying the client at the end of not find the address from dhcp server, now I got to try your fix known on virtual-box this weekend. Thanks again.
@@RajeshRajasekharan i spend all day to deploy it, but one think i forgot to add - next server in dhcdp4.conf. when i specified it - that works. Wooohhh. Gl in future
Hello Rajesh. Once again, great work. I'd like to share a finding with you, just in case you can improve the unattended installation. This has nothing to do with your presentations, but more to do with how solaris does things. For me, an unattended installation means, power up and walk away. With solaris though, it looks like you have to stick around and select Automated Install at the boot prompt. I did not like this, so I did some looking around. It looks like there is a file in /var/ai/service//menu.conf. When you create a client, this file gets copied to the folder /etc/netboot and a number generated using the mac address of the client is added to this file name. If you open the file, you will see that it has the 2 boot profiles inside it. Each profile has a property called "default" and by default it has the value "False". If you change this to "True" for the Automated Install profile, it will automatically select this one during the boot. If you of course change the initial copy in the /var./..... location above, every client will inherit this property. There is probably some sort of flag you can pass the create-client or the create-service commands that will do this, but I haven't found it yet... Anyway, I thought this might get you as curious as I am.... :-) By the way, your auto_reboot did not work because the word true needed quotes, so "true" instead of true, but I'm sure you have figured that out by now. If you find a flag for the Automated Install, I'd love to find out about it. Until then, keep up the good work and thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Regards Yiannis
Hi Mr. Rajesh, when I create the service and providing values for DHCP in installadm, it is executed but the DHCP service is not getting started, even if I start it with svcadm, it goes to maintenance mode, btw, I kept my server net as bridge and client as internal.
Thank you for sharing. I have Solaris 11.3 and plan to use this as Jumpstart server, I want copy Solaris 11.4 image on server. I download the text installation. Can I install image to Solaris 11.3 for Jumpstart?
Hello - You can contact me on torajeshr[at]aol[dot]com Please note that I have not been working on Solaris OS for quite a long period now. So not sure how much of help can I offer.
Hi Rajesh, the information you shared is very helpful. I have one query regarding AI images in OpenIndiana. If possible can you make video on building AI images for OI-11. Thanks alot.
Hi Rajesh. I have followed your steps to create an AI server and it is working fine but when I reboot the client after installation instead of going to Profile setting it is going to installation again. Can you please help me to over come this issue.
You'll have to set the boot order as disk(1) -> network(2). So initially when you system has no OS on disk, it'll boot from the network, and once the installation is through, since the disk now has an OS installed, it'll boot from the OS.
Solaris 11.x AI is the replacement for Solaris 8.x/9.x/10.x Jumpstart installation. It makes use of: - DHCP (as against the rarp in Jumpstart. Jumpstart can also use DHCP if you want, but the configuration is a bit complicated) - TFTP (same as Jumpstart) - HTTP for IPS package download and install (as against the NFS used in Jumpstart)
You can find a comparison of Jumpstart and AI here: docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/E21799/compjs2ai.html In there, you'll also find details about scripts (js2ai) that can be used to convert the existing Jumpstart Configuration files in Solaris 10 to its equivalent manifests in Solaris 11
Hi, do you have issue with DHCP, every time I remove client and the dhcp/server:IPv4 failed to maintenance mode and won't come back online show no reason.
Hi Jim, I don't remembering facing this issue. Could you check the SMF log for DHCP Server service and see if it has any hints. Normally, the SMF log files (/var/smf/log/ ) shows pretty straight forward error messages.
Hello Kiran, There is no flash installation in Solaris. Instead you could use the Unified Archive for installing the OS or building a Solaris 11 Zone. You will see videos on UAR in my Solaris 11 TH-cam Playlist
Here's the Oracle official documentation for Solaris 11 that talks about Automated Install: docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/E21798/intro-1.html#scrolltoc Hope it helps.
Hi great video! I followed your instructions and still has issue install the x86 client on VM guest. "Could not obtain address of AI server from DHCP server". I added fixed-address line like you said but still bailed out. Thx
Thank you for your kind words, Jim. If you are using Virtual Box for this exercise, can you please also make sure the two virtual machines (AI Server and Client) have been configured to use 'internal network' (in the Network Configuration of Virtual Box for each of the Virtual machine). By default it sets to NAT, in which case, these two machines are virtually not in the same network.
Thanks for your reply. Sorry I did not explain more details about my setup. My AI and DHCP servers are on same physical sever (not in VMware), but the client I am trying to install is VMware guest.
Yah, it did pick up the tftp pxe boot at the beginning, however just stop after probe the device and could not obtain address then died prompt for enter root password, weird
Ok, so clearly no problem with the Network connectivity there. At the prompt if you want, you can login as jack/jack and see the logs for more details. The default root user password is 'solaris'. And the by the way, the work around I used in specifying a fixed address is a quick fix for just Virtual Box. Haven't tried it on VMWare though. Let me know if log says anything interesting.
Thanks much Rajesh. This is very helpful information and practical sessions! Appreciate all your help! Regarding customized disks partitioning to be created through manifest file, I looked couple of example here @ docs.oracle.com/cd/E37838_01/html/E89348/sample-manifest.html I hope this is useful.
Thanks a lot for your video
@nmanikkumaar - you are most welcome!
Hi R. Great videos! I just took the Solaris Administration 1Z0-821exam (and passed :) ). Your videos helped. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your encouraging words, Ian
Thanks Rajesh for keeping it simple. Please can you put up something on Solaris LDOM(logical domain).
Thank you so much, George. Let me see if I can get access to a T Series machine to prepare a demonstration on LDoms.

Hi Rajesh Sir,
How are you doing?
It's really very helpful for the complete AI installation. We will use this for our reference.
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you find it useful. All the best!
Hi Rajesh,
Can we have AI installer server with out DHCP.
Thank you for awesome video.
How can we make same server to allow different OS version for client installation, like 11.1, 11.2 etc
Thank you for sharing. I have Solaris 11.3 and plan to use this as Jumpstart server, I want copy Solaris 11.4 image on server. I download the text installation. Can I install image to Solaris 11.3 for Jumpstart?

Is Automated installer is a replacement of jumpstart with advance futures?
Solaris 11.x AI is the replacement for Solaris 8.x/9.x/10.x Jumpstart installation. It makes use of:
