K-25: Historic Preservation Agreement

In a ceremony attended by representatives of federal, state, and local historic preservation groups, the U.S. Department of Energy announced the formal completion of an agreement that will preserve the historic contributions of Oak Ridge's K-25 site to the World War II Manhattan Project. In this video, Oak Ridge Historian Bill Wilcox explores the contributions the K-25 project gave to our country and the importance of preserving this legacy for the benefit of future generations.

I worked at K-25 and Y-12 both but loved K-25. My retirement started just before demolition began. I was fortunate enough to be able to go into every inch of the big "U" building. It was truly an engineering masterpiece.

Me too....retired in 1993 after 41 years service.....exactly. Oct. 1, 1952 till Sept.30th, 1993. I lived in Oak Ridge 50 years. May 1944 till January 1994. I live on the lake near Kingston, TN now.

There was a Presidential viewing area in K-25, in anticipation of a Presidential visit by FDR. The only president to visit this facility was Carter. He was also the only president to have a sophisticated knowledge of atomic fission.

Not so sure of that about Carter. He did not finish the Naval Nuclear Program as it existed back then so while he may have had some knowledge I seriously doubt it was a sophisticated level of knowledge.

Kelly Roberts was the largest building in the world until the pentagon. and now its gone :(

Kelly Roberts It was 1/2 mile long each side. It was decided that it wasn't feasible to have a true straight line mile long building so the plan was changed to have a north end transition to the other side. Sort of like folding a piece of cardboard if you will.
