lucy you are the best teacher
Cheers Lucy! Thanks for your continued support! ❤
I am learning a british version of English because it sounds more softer and I love watching british films❤ And I am very happy that I can find british teachers on youtube❤❤❤
You look like the actress kate Winslet from the movie titanic
At all!!
I’m from London and I once did a job on a council estate near Birmingham. I couldn’t understand them and they couldn’t understand me. It was embarrassing.
That's quite relieving and comforting to read 😄😄. If you who's English had a hard time there, it's ok that Liverpool's and Black Country's accents sound unintelligible for me
Don't make me laugh, Iam from Africa but I can understand English from any person, no matter the country where you come from, I use to interpret people of different countries when they come in our church for the service
@@romanamassawe814 Ok maybe I’m exaggerating a bit but it was a struggle at least at first.
😂😂😂❤
@@wallysilva6937 The trick is to resort to neutral English (or whatever language you are speaking) until you are both comfortable.
I’m English (born in Kent, raised in Devon, lived in south wales and Worcestershire in the past, currently live in Lincolnshire) but I still struggle with some accents from some individual people. Even a really broad Devonian accent! I used to teach on the edge of Dartmoor and would often see an old man in the morning. I never understood a single word he said!
Привет! Я из Сибири! Ваше сообщение немного успокаивает… Если уж Вам сложно, то что говорить о мне. А Вы на этом канале, чтобы выучить английский? 😉
The UK not only has regional accents, but also has economic class accents. A British woman in my country returned to the UK and back after 5 years away and told me that she didn't realize the class separation was so great in the UK until she returned after 5 years. We really don't have such class separation, so it really would stand out comparing the two countries.
But you are from which country?
Yep. Everyone can see and feel the class separation coming from 2nd and 3rd world countries.
Although middle-class British tend to speak way more clean English than bottom-class. They might use posh "wo'ds", but they will make themselves heard loud and clear. 😂
Yes indeed, and that distinction is more acute if someone from the lower socio strata ends up on the wrong side of the law. Uk is seemingly amiable on a brief visit, but if you find yourself adjusting to its elitest and hierarchal culture, it morphs a hostile existence unless you share a higher membership.. Truly horrendous, lovely country, but there are reasons why so many Brits leave seeking a more equal and less exclusive climate..
@@Jimmie567what a load of drivel you are talking
I am upper middle class.
As a German I found the *Shetland* series relatively easy to understand. Some Scotts told me there are phonetic similarities which makes it easier both ways.
Im german too and I found out, that it depends from the region in Germany. In Bavaria, espascially in Oktoberfest-County😅, where I grew up, we have a strong rhotic accent.
I don't know Shetland so I don't know the local accent. But there's no dialect in the series. In a lot of these series, they just stick the occasional word in to make it sound "dialecty". I had the same experience with Montalbano, set in Sicily. "This I'd easy", I thought. When I went to get my hair cut in a small town in Sicily on holiday, I was trying to understand what the other customers were saying. Not a word! The BBC makes a lot of money from exports!
Had a few comments asking about 'The Black Country.' The Black Country is an area of England, in the middle. It covers a collection of towns and boroughs near to Birmingham. It is called the Black Country because of its industrial history, where the many factories and foundries would create a lot of smoke in the area.
Many thanks . Apart of learning the British English with you .
I got more information of UK 🇬🇧.
Where have you been, guys? It's been a month since I watched this video.
I’m from France, did my studies in Birmingham and then Liverpool. My girlfriend is also from France, but did her studies in London.
Now we are in Scotland. I can understand easily the Scottish accent while my girlfriend is really struggling with it 😅
I’m From Egypt 🇪🇬
I've been living in London for 5 years and I mastered the London accent I love London's accent and I have beautiful memories there ❤

It clarifies a lot how the different accents have been created and I find the way you explain very amusing. Gràcies des de Barcelona.

No doubt, I fell in ❤ with your way of teaching 😊
Thanks a lot for this amazing video. I enjoyed a and learned and couldn't stop watching till the end.
that is brilliant for me that I am new in the UK. you gave me a lot of for learning the world's mother language
Thank you for a really wonderful and educational video. I really struggled to understand the origins of different UK accents but you have helped me to do so. I grew up in Gravesend and found my first job north of Aberdeen, I had to really tune into their way of saying things.
Even as a native UK English speaker, mostly northern RP but can naturally slip into the Yorkshire accent, these videos are so entertaining. It's unbelievable how many different accents they are here. There's a distinct difference between a Derby and Nottingham accent and yet they are 20km/13 miles away.
Thank you for a useful lesson 🙏
You are wonderful teacher, with or without R. I love your films.
Thank you! I loved this video!
Thanks a lot.
Have a great weekend 👍
I'm very happy to know you Laura 🤩❤️👏🏻🙌🏻

This is jolly good. I was always wondering why the accents have survived since folks move and travel a lot. I look forward to a discussion on the association of accents with private schooling.

This woman is a teacher by profession
i have lived in England for 10 years , and worked there for long as well, I do get loads of the accents.....
If you live in Hull for a while you can catch most accents.....😅😅😅

Hey Laura!! I really love this subject about the English accents, because in my country (Brazil) have a lot of different accents too. I've been in UK in 2021 (Scotland, Lenceister, London), and for me is the much difficult to understand was the Scotish accent!! 😂😂
Next time, make glasgow (Scotland) your destinatio,, there you, ll love its dulcet tones,,

You are so right. I studied English more or less 13 years and it's really difficult for me to understand UK accents. Probably because we are flooded with American accents - films, music, etc. It's just a matter of practice I suppose.

I love all your accents
In fact WILTY is the reason I got into learning and understanding British humour
Wow, I really appreciate lessons like this one. Sometimes I even use some of those pronunciations automatically without realizing it. Now I can understand better, loved the rotic and non rotic explanation and the intrusive r. Thank you so much from Italy 😊
It would be great if you made a series of videos on the topic training us to understand different British accents by watching movies and interviews and explaining every detail. I believe such videos might get really popular.
Oh yes, that would be amazing 🤩🤩🤩
😮
To be honest I m still struggling delving in to the accents ,
after many years of learning English.
As a Dutchman , Rhotic accent helps for me , really spells it out.
You are a great teacher Laura, and I love this gem of a video , you nailed it.
Overwhelming quality, and all these tips are amazing and work for me .
Excellent video. Very clarifying
Glad it was helpful!☺️🇬🇧
*This is very useful video. 👌🏿*
Years ago I went in University of Essex for a course of advanced data analysis. It was terrible speak with locals in shops when you are used to understand only RP english.
Please, what is “RP” English.?
@@royjohnson465”received pronunciation”
@@royjohnson465RP is the standart british accent. It's the accent we first think of when we think about British English.
Our motto for Essex is: Who needs consonants anyway?😅
@@royjohnson465I have a pen pal in Cardiff and he also didn't know that the RP is.
But he knew the Queen's English.
Which is probably the same as RP.
IMO the best and the easiest "version" of English.
... On the other hand I always ask myself, Received Pronunciation... Ok, received from who? :)
That's 'awesome...! 👍
Thank you ..
Laura, I like your English lessons😊
They have helped me a lot.
The first reason for the appeal of British English is that it is pleasant to the ear.
All of them are pleasant to the ear? There are so many “British” accents and they are all so different
Believe me, some accents like the highlighted Scouse sound like static radio on phets. Some others though, the Northumberland accent are absolutely beautiful.
