Omg Grease was the first musical I was ever introduced to! A group of girls at my school went as the Pink Ladies for our Halloween dance and I told them I loved their costumes.
I really love that interpretation of the end of the show as Sandy coming to terms with her own sexuality. It honestly makes the show sit a lot better with me
I think both of them changed to fit into each others's lives, sometimes is necessary to make it work (I think it's their case) and she didn't change completely, in fact, in the lyrics of "You're The One That I Want" she does say that he will have to step it up if he wants her bc she's gonna stay true to herself and she says and shows that throughout the movie too 💞💞
For way too much time I didn't like Grease because of Sandy's transformation. After Grease Live! I realised 2 things: First, Danny was in love with Sandy way before she decided to change, and she knew that,so that can't be her motivation. Secondly, Sandy was obsessively stuck to her nice school girl image, after one point she had enough of that. That is why she struggled, because her insides started feeling different that what she was used to. It's the teenage years, that coming of age story. After that prespective, I changed my mind immediately. P.S. I want a Ilse tutorial,she is such an underappreciated character P.S. 2. AOTD: I'm probably one of those random Grease girls listening to "Summer nights" ,looking like I care about her romance when I really am not. P.S. 3. You're beautiful.
i was talking about sandy's change with my mom the other day and she had a theory that sandy wanted a new image at her new school and that the sexy side of her was always there and she just began embracing it again

I honestly feel like I'd be the Doody of my friend group, but idk, I might be Patty Simcox, because I'm a goody two shoes, and I can be kinda over the top
I have to say, that’s something I think about every time too! Every time I find myself thinking about that Sandy transformation, it takes me a second to remember that Danny also tried to change for her too....just an interesting thought because it really changes things. If it was just Sandy changing for Danny, that’s obviously very unequal and unhealthy but they both tried to change for each other because they both wanted to be with each other and were humbled enough by that love to not think themselves above becoming a different person in order to be together...because of that one simple fact that Danny also tried to change, it makes the situation totally different...
Oh I love Grease! And yes I agree, the stage version of Grease is a lot more ‘mature’ than the movie, I was in a production of Grease here in Australia, and shockingly they didn’t modify it, even though majority of the ensemble cast were under 12 😅
I love the fact that you mentioned that Danny tried to change himself for Sandy because no one ever really points that out they just point out Sandy’s change which was more obvious. I personally think that Danny changed because it’s what he thought Sandy would like which towards the end she just liked him for him but it’s great that he took that extra step to try and show Sandy he was serious about wanting to be with her and not just to show off to his friends that he had a girl. Now with Sandy’s change she asked the girls to give her a makeover and considering the fact that they were all more so like act II Sandy when it comes to their clothes and attitude. But I do agree that Sandy wanted to be more “risky” and being with or wanting to be with Danny definitely pushed her to be able to do so.

I have a similar situation usually, because I recently developed arthritis. I can hardly ever do dance-heavy musicals because the pain gets so bad, I do rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and everything, but by opening night, I can't go on because of the pain. When I CAN do a dance-heavy musical, I have to audition for a role I don't like but has little to no dancing.
I always look forward to these videos! I could honestly listen to you do these character/musical analyses forever, it would be so cool to see even more in depth discussions on them, even if it was a long video and on your second channel I would still watch the heck out of something like that! 💙

Yes! Omg I loved this video and I agree that Sandy goes through a realization of her womanhood at the end of the show. I played Kim MacAfee over the summer and Kim is very similar in that she wants to be treated and looked upon like she is an adult and a great way to do that is by having a transformation and wowing everyone. :) Love you Kat! ❤️
People fault Sandy for “changing for Danny”, but throughout the entire show, Danny is trying to change for Sandy. And if you really pay attention to the lyrics of “You’re The One That I Want”, it’a very clear they love each other for who the other person is, and they’re done messing around trying to please everyone else (mainly the T-Birds and Pink Ladies) and they’re saying “screw it we’re going to be together.” That’s the way I see it anyway. I also fully agree with your insight about it as well.

I think people look at the whole ‘women changing themselves to impress men’ and think negatively about it. Personally I think if a woman wants to change up her look to impress a guy, it’s super chill and totally ok!! Looking at the big picture it’s their choice, and clearly (in the movie atleast) Sandy wants to look ‘sexy’ for Danny and maybe even wants to look sexy for herself too. I feel like Sandy really became confident and happier in her greaser look and wether she did that for a man or for herself it doesn’t matter. She’s happy and she isn’t hurting anybody, so go ham! 👏🏼💕

That was just how I interpreted the show the first time even though I didn't think about it as being a deep metaphor or anything at the time. It wasn't until later I heard people saying Sandy shouldn't change herself for Danny and such

I agree that Sandy is embracing a repressed side of her by the end of the show! I’ve always found Sandy relatable because as a young gay male™️ I’ve always felt like I had to fight back parts of my personality and try to be kind of like Act I Sandy to be accepted socially. Thankfully as I got older I learned how to accept all of myself, even the Act II Sandy parts that I originally thought had to be hidden, and thats largely because of lessons I learned while being in Grease! 🎶 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic and for making this gr8 vid!
Okay so like I’ve been dreaming about being Sandy since I was legit 5 years old and I was just cast as her at my university and I’ve been trying figure out how to characterize her ever since then because the written script gives her a lot more sass than the movie does. I love the idea that the ending is Sandy coming to terms with her own sexuality/womanhood, rather than changing for Danny. I do think that the argument that he changes for her is void, however, since in the show he ends up flipping of the coach when asked to cut his hair, ultimately showing that he is and always will be a true “Greaser” and didn’t actually change at all for Sandy.
I think that yes Sandy should not become sexy to please Danny. But I agree with your point on her becoming a woman. I also think it’s really sweet that Danny was embracing his good guy side for her at the end of the show. I don’t think Sandy became sexy for Danny, but it’s more for herself and to show her maturity. That’s my little theatre rant for the day, I loved this! ❤️💋
My high school years were like Eugene, because I was bullied sometimes, but not as much as when I was in elementary school. Sandy because I was the new girl, who went from an all-girl Catholic high school to a public high school. Toward senior year of high school, I became Frenchie, because I took a certified nursing assistant class in my high school. However, unlike Frenchie who dropped out of beauty school, I became a successful nurse.
I played Act 2 Sandy in Grease (we double cast based on acts) so I only really played and saw sandy as a broken hearted girl who gets harassed by someone she loves only to change herself for that guy. I didn’t love that idea until I looked more closely at act 1. Sandy has some feisty moments and times where she’s being flirtatious with Danny by making fun of him. She isn’t just an innocent girl who doesn’t know better, she knows full well her sexuality and is coming to terms with it along with dealing with basic struggles of high school

I didn’t love that idea until I looked more closely at act 1. Sandy has some feisty moments and times where she’s being flirtatious with Danny by making fun of him. She isn’t just an innocent girl who doesn’t know better, she knows full well her sexuality and is coming to terms with it along with dealing with basic struggles of high school
