- Behind the scenes of a studio session using flash photography for fitness portraits with the Godox AD1200 Pro and AD600 Pro. I used a number of modifiers inluding strip boxes, rectangle softboxes, large and small octaboxes all on paper for a mix of catalog and test shooting fitness apparel.
First look was a set of white Adidas athletic apparel. Second set was a black jacket. Third set was a black dress. 4th set was magenta fitness apparel. I hope this behind the scenes can help you with some lighting, background, and photography technique considerations.
Straight out of camera vs. Final Images will be shared here :

This is great. No long winded explanations about the history of modifiers. Just “this is what we did and why we did it”
Lol is that a shot at my beauty dish explanation in the pure white video?😅😅😅 I thought that was valuable considering how many BDs don’t even come with a perforated diffuser option!
@@robhallphoto lol no no, just nice to see a vid that is straight to the point. some of us already have a good knowledge of lighting and are just curious to see how others are using it.
@@Cykob0b Heard! You’ve described exactly who I try to make my videos for. It’s tough, cause I understand someone new to flash is like “WTF IS 1.3 stops”. But I also don’t want to bore advanced flash users with those explanations in every video.
Interesting comment about the hand, big brain right there
Great video, Robert! Thanks for not only all of the tidbits from the main photo but all of the photos!
Happy to do it, I love making these BTS in turbo mode. High efficiency makes me happy😎
The ton of lessons learned from this video!
Loving your new studio options!
Awesome video 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 king of lighting
Already love the final result, but the curious part of me is wondering how that maroon outfit would have popped with a white backdrop.
The maroon clothing would look nice for sure, but the shoes would have gotten lost a bit. Also I like to avoid showing the ground on white at all costs 😂.
This was quality!
Thanks!
Good refresher course if for personal use or other.
buen trabajo, gracias por compartir. un saludo desde Colombia
Nice stuff bro, thanks for sharing
Great stuff!!
Please! Keep making these. Very helpful and informative. Any adjustments to the ad1200? All that hype around the Profoto 11 got me loving the ad1200 so much more.
Thank you!
Not sure what you’re asking by “any adjustments to the ad1200?”
hi, do you use the AD1200 pro + AD600 pro in same time during a session ? i'm using sony HVL-F60RM2 as flash at this time and would like to know if this Godox combo is better for outdoor sport and lifestyle shooting thank you sir !!
Beautiful studio buddy
I saw the Godox H1200P just got released! You should definitely do a comparison between 2 AD600Pro vs AD1200Pro. I would think that it should allow for 1200Ws at 0.9s recycle
As far as I know a dual head does not exist for the 600 Pro. Would be surprised if they developed one given the 1200 Pro existing now.
I enjoy your videos and content so I say this respectfully, but I didnt really feel this one in terms of delivery. Sounded like a kid ready a book report in class quickly so he can go sit down again, and looked like it too :P . Love your content where it feels like you're talking to us. That said, love the photos, the insights and the challenges/problem solving in the new studio. This lady is a fantastic model, with a great frame for many different genres... except when she is selling drugs to children hahaha
Do you own a fog machine or do you always use canned spray? If you were to buy a machine do you know what you would buy
Awesome video. What are you using to create the "smoke"? Did I see a spray bottle of sorts?

Thank you so much Robert! Informative and very helpful tutorial! As a quick question, is the gray backdrop you've used for the shot Savage? If yes, may I ask for the type of that? (Product code, or name? Thank you! God bless you and good luck!
Please tell me what kind of light is on the right side of the frame at 01:10? As far as I know, Godox AD1200 does not have such a long cable. Thanks!
it's a 1200 pro.
@@robhallphoto Thanks!
Do you have a link to any 3 strobe e-commerce type set ups? I'm learning to shoot for my own clothing brand and I am loving your tutorials.. would be great if you could help out. Best wishes
What is the can of smoke your assistance is holding at the 4:34 mark?
Do you prefer the Glow or Cheetah 20 inch deep para? The Cheetah has a pebble interior but only a single layer of diffusion.
Perks of Cheetah :
Exterior material feels more durable
Perks of Glow :
Less expensive
Regarding the interior diffusion: Ed at Cheetahstand said there was no purpose to interior diffusion as it did not have a big impact on light quality, I would agree.
Regarding pebble silver, Ed said that choice was to even out the light pattern more - I don’t see a difference vs the polish silver of the glow and the polish silver has a tiny bit more light output when diffusion is off.
What brand and model is your smoke machine?
Its a can of atmosphere aerosol.
I keep coming back to this video for I soo. Question for your action shots with the activeware. How did you stop the paper from slipping on the floor? I saw you taped it s little at the front but was that all? I assume the floors are concrete or very smooth (not like carpet)
Hi Lucy,
If you are unsure you can tape the sides as well.
I run paper on top of a laminate floor and just tape the front/front corners with no issues. I have ot be more careful when using white faced hard board for a grounding reflection (white seamless set) as they will slide with being shingled over each other.
What spray was that used for the mist look?
I love that background.
Robert what kind of spray are you using? Does it smell bad? Oops never mind I saw someone else posted the same question.
Wonder if it’s toxic though. Some of models definitely don’t like the toxic smells.
Nope, environmentally safe aerosol and Non-toxic! Totally comfortable using indoors.
@@robhallphoto awesome thanks 🙏 for replying Robert.
@@fotofx9589 The only problem you'll run into is the haze stays in the air for hours after spraying. So if you have a ton of shooting mapped out, do any haze shots at the very end so it doesn't affect the contrast of the rest of your shoot!
@@longliveclassicmusic thanks 🙏 for that excellent tip.
Looking at buying a wheeled stand to use with boom. Do you have a recommendation between the two types/styles shown in this video
Out of all the ones I have (4-5), Junior stand with wheels is hands down my favorite.
Thanks for the BTS what was the name of that red background

how do we get the focus and where do we focus? Please teach me.....
Autofocus. On the thing you want in focus.
@@robhallphoto like in nikon d750 3d auto focus where we focus on the eye and let it track automatically?
Yeah I’d probably 3D track on the D750 too but I wouldn’t aim for an eye in this scenario, there’s really no need as the entirety of the subject is in focus. In this moving scenario I just focused on the contrast of Emily’s top.
@@robhallphoto thank you for sharing this knowledge to me. appreciate it very much.
