    Thanks for the video. I just made a trailer test box with the same Plano ammo can. Next one will have your 90 degree connectors. It is a lot of fun to experiment with these.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the angle connectors really give it a pro look. Use the silicone wire. It's the best stuff out there. I believe the 14 gauge wire, you can stuff two into one of the blue connectors. I'm going to do a wiring video, but it's time consuming and I've had so many other projects I wanted to do for you tube. Just don't wanna the be ammo box guy ya know.....

      @@thisoldmanchannel My next box will have silicone wire. Ive built a power box since I made this comment. Used a lithium iron phosphate battery. Not that theres anything wrong with SLA. When I get the time I might do a video about my trailer box and my go box. SLA seems to work really well for the trailer test box. I had a tiny 5AH battery in it because, simply put, you only use a battery for seconds when you check trailer lights and brakes. I've enjoyed your other videos.

      That stuff I got on ebay. Wiring is silicone... Need to get back to you on the gages because you'll have to fit two wires on one connector and if the wires are too thick they won't fit. Use a wire calculator to make sure the the wires can handle the battery power for the length you are running... Lastly, wire in a fuse block for added safety.

    I would like to see one of these built with the application of kayak fishing in mind. Waterproof, red light/green light for legal night paddling. Power source for minnow bucket aeration, Power source for stick light for night paddling, power source for fish finder, etc. Possibly a secure drybox/sleeve to store cell phone and keep charged. So many applications.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First off, double thank you for watching and subscribing. Don't know much about kayaks, but I've got a friend into some higher end vessels. Why wouldn't you just fiberglass in a battery tray and add a deep cycle marine battery behind the seat? If that's possible then how about a custom solar panel following your kayak's contours that would charge the battery while you were paddling during the day? Integrate everything you want.

    • @elektrofry
      @elektrofry 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thisoldmanchannel the weight difference between the battery you use in your ammo boxes and a 12v marine battery is quite alot. Unless a person was using a trolling motor for propulsion, I would not recommend a full size marine battery for the application of running a few accessories. I do agree a solar panel would extend the use of a smaller battery and make alot of sense for longer days on the water or multi day trips.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, Kayaking is a specialized need as is a battery with sufficient amp hours for extended and multi day use, especially if you're out away from the amenities of civilization. Doesn't matter who builds them most of these are good for a day or so... Solar is only good if you got sun or access to sunlight. Maybe we're just too dependent on gizmos. Thank you for your comments.

    Questions.
    1. You mentioned a fuse bank. Some builders have used a single inline fuse from the + battery terminal. If a charge controller is part of the schematic, is a charge controller factory fused? If not, is the fused panel bank overkill or good planning?
    Electronics isnt one of my strong points.
    Like the builds. Am trying to design one also but I am decades behind you.

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes a fuse bank. If you blow a fuse on a fuse bank you still have other circuits that are still working.. You blow a main fuse and your whole battery box is out of commission.. No big deal unless you're out in the wilderness or on a roadside at night and you're fumbling for a fuse... That was my thinking with using a fuse bank.. Hey great comment! Thank you for watching!

      Bought the box at Menards, paid $4.99 plus tax. Now probably a sporting goods store or ebay since Menards changed their supplier.

    I want to build a HF ham radio go box. Then have a separate box with the battery. Interface with powerpole connector.come into the radio box with a solar controller. Auto switch from AC to Battery or solar. Also solar battery be able to charge the battery. True emergency off the grid use.

      Hello Doc. You wanna go lithium ion with your go box, solar controller, solar panels. Power pole connectors, been using those before they got popular with radio enthusiasts for radio control projects... Keep it simple.. Form follows function. Thank you for your comments.

    Where are the powerpole connectors? Why all the switches?

    • @thisoldmanchannel
      @thisoldmanchannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look at the Tamiya Mini Cooper Video, you'll see them on the electric HPI Chassis... I didn't use them on the ammo cans since you can run a wire off the 12 V terminal jacks to an Anderson PowerPole. I'd go with the rmolded recessed square ones for an ammo can build... Lots of 3D Printed stuff on ebay to choose from as well.

      If you look up Ham Radio Go box. You will see lots of them. I want to build mine for radios in a gator 4U box then an Ammo box for battery, Solar charge controller. The interface to the radio go box would be powerpole.

    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
