Just as another incentive to get GrapheneOS: I charged my Pixel 7 pro to 90% almost 48 hours ago. With my normal use (including a night on call where I used the phone more than I normally do since I was awake all night) my battery is now at 52%. Insane how much battery the bloatware and tracking is using in the background.
I'd like to also give a shoutout to Droidify. Another FOSS F-Droid Client which from my experience works much better than the regular client and looks more modern.

What are your thoughts on the security concerns of the F-Droid App (which can be avoided with Droid-icy or Neo Store) and the F-Droid Repository itself. From what I have heard there have been multiple problems in the past....the way apps are signed for example isn't perfect.

Aurora store is broken for me. Search feature doesn't work for months already, so it's nearly impossible to download apps that already own and purchased. I am forced to use Google Play Store on my de-googled phone [insert ANGRY FACE here]. Aurora store used to be 'good' but not right now. F-Droid is good but it's NOT a google store replacement.

I believe the security issues out way the privacy issues of the Google play store when using Graphene. I believe I can create a relatively private experience using the play store on Graphene. With the threat level based on allowing companies to know me but not track or build a dossier. I think we often close up one vulnerability while opening up another one.
New GOS user here. Seems the app stores other than Google are somewhat shady. I find it telling that GOS apps has Google play store in the list to install. I don’t like getting a download link direct from a website for an App Store. I think I’ll stick with play store but still have the GOS privacy features
Perhaps the most secure app store next to graphene's own. Graphene prioritizes security over privacy, meaning you're less likely to get hacked using SB Gplay than fdroid because fdroid left some app un-updated or had their priv keys leaked or build server hacked. But still you'll have to deal with gplay analytics (limited) tied to your account.
The phone collecting data is wrong, its the google play services and Graphene OS might be a good option if you have a pixel phone but for everyone else i would rather recommend Lineage OS with microg or, if your device is supported /e/ OS.

It uses the same consent on usage that big tech uses They also log ip addr for rate limiting. Just a few caveates to be aware of.

These can be very useful for dev & security testing. There's currently a gap in the market for a foss self hosted solution like correllium testing.

The issue is NOT, I repeat NOT a locked bootloader that 90% of you mistake. The issue is lack of a bootloader that supports *verified boot with a custom rom*. We're hinging our entire privacy & security on one lineup of phones (pixel) which not only isn't available to the majority of the world but also has bootloader locked skus like verizon pixels.
A great low pressure way to do this is to buy a second phone that can take GrapheneOS. I've been able to take my procrastinating time, and not worry about screwing things up.
Installed Aurora and searched for the apps. Can find them, but there are sooo many trackers listed and most of them depend on "Google play". I assume for notifications

Open question to anyone: My Aurora store keeps giving me the message "Oops, This account is rate limited." The only course of action I've been able to find to remedy this is to wait it out because I've had too many attempted sign-ins. However, I've waited for several days now and I keep getting the same message. Any suggestions to get around this would be most appreciated. Brave has always used Bing for their image search. Now they offer you the choice of using Bing or Google and make it explicit that those searches are not handled by them.
I just watched a video where a network engineer looked into how Google's malicious site detection worked and the main takeaway was that Google is everywhere. Lots of sites use Google services in the background, mainly it seems by using (linking to) Google-supplied fonts... 😱
Just one problem when using Aurora store... The App Search has not been working for at least two weeks! The official Play Store has the people and resources to properly maintain and secure the Apps quickly while Aurora simply can't keep up with issues in a timely manner. Just something for consideration.

It Does not matter where something is loaded from people sign away privacy in many ways. Simply because it’s harder to track something does not mean it has stopped in any way. I believe doing what you talk about actually provides a shadow network of bad actors that cannot be tracked easily.

What are your thoughts on the security concerns of the F-Droid App (which can be avoided with Droid-icy or Neo Store) and the F-Droid Repository itself. From what I have heard there have been multiple problems in the past....the way apps are signed for example isn't perfect.
Google has recently started blocking anonymous login sessions on Aurora store. Naomi, do you believe it would be just as safe to sign into Aurora with a throwaway Google account?

Thanks a lot Naomi for sharing this info! it would be great to have a video in order to know how to disable many Android background apps. I tried using a firewall, however many use GPS, sharing location, nearby location... as a consquence, if we disable some from Google, Gmail stops working.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong; F-Droid doesn't show any programs but is looking for nearby people, and Aurora is in Chinese only it seems.

Aurora store is broken for me. Search feature doesn't work for months already, so it's nearly impossible to download apps that already own and purchased. I am forced to use Google Play Store on my de-googled phone [insert ANGRY FACE here]. Aurora store used to be 'good' but not right now. F-Droid is good but it's NOT a google store replacement.

duck duck go 1) in settings: enable app tracking, and check each time you clear your caches.
2) gboard settings:
( gearbox icon, located in the suggestion strip ) toggle off
EVERYTHING except "suggestion strip "
go through privacy with a fine tooth comb, finally enter the 4 digit code. You wont have spell check anymore, but they cant log your keystrokes.

I believe the security issues out way the privacy issues of the Google play store when using Graphene. I believe I can create a relatively private experience using the play store on Graphene. With the threat level based on allowing companies to know me but not track or build a dossier.
I think we often close up one vulnerability while opening up another one.
Everything is relative but that doesn't mean there are no thresholds. The apps you install through playstore still builds a dossier.
I agree with the idea of opening new vulnerabilities trying to close ones.
New GOS user here. Seems the app stores other than Google are somewhat shady.
I find it telling that GOS apps has Google play store in the list to install.
I don’t like getting a download link direct from a website for an App Store.

What do you think about running Google Play in Sandbox mode through Graphene OS?
Perhaps the most secure app store next to graphene's own.
Graphene prioritizes security over privacy, meaning you're less likely to get hacked using SB Gplay than fdroid because fdroid left some app un-updated or had their priv keys leaked or build server hacked.
But still you'll have to deal with gplay analytics (limited) tied to your account.
The phone collecting data is wrong, its the google play services and Graphene OS might be a good option if you have a pixel phone but for everyone else i would rather recommend Lineage OS with microg or, if your device is supported /e/ OS.

You just have to use the technique that we mentioned, and find the apps using the google play link. Let us know if you have issues setting that up!

@@NaomiBrockwellTV Aurora has a bunch of bugs like that. But perhaps the most crucial is it's ToS & priv policy are subject to change without prior notice & don't require explicit user consent. It uses the same consent on usage that big tech uses They also log ip addr for rate limiting.
Just a few caveates to be aware of.

Is it possible to spoof sensors, camera, radios, location & networks (cell/wifi), etc like correllium does? These can be very useful for dev & security testing. There's currently a gap in the market for a foss self hosted solution like correllium testing.
What about LineageOS vs GrapheneOS, can speak about that?
The main problem with both is that only a very limited selection of devices is supported, and they tend to be the higher-specification models.
Graphene needs to support the galaxy devices.
They dont have the security chip that is in the pixel phones and samsung phones have a locked bootloader so that can't install a custom rom

The issue is NOT, I repeat NOT a locked bootloader that 90% of you mistake. The issue is lack of a bootloader that supports *verified boot with a custom rom*.
We're hinging our entire privacy & security on one lineup of phones (pixel) which not only isn't available to the majority of the world but also has bootloader locked skus like verizon pixels.
While I'm considering switching to GrapheneOS, I'm not sure about apps and if I'll find all I need. Mostly banking apps
A great low pressure way to do this is to buy a second phone that can take GrapheneOS.
I've been able to take my procrastinating time, and not worry about screwing things up.

Installed Aurora and searched for the apps. Can find them, but there are sooo many trackers listed and most of them depend on "Google play". I assume for notifications

My Aurora store keeps giving me the message "Oops, This account is rate limited." The only course of action I've been able to find to remedy this is to wait it out because I've had too many attempted sign-ins. However, I've waited for several days now and I keep getting the same message. Any suggestions to get around this would be most appreciated.

Brave has always used Bing for their image search. Now they offer you the choice of using Bing or Google and make it explicit that those searches are not handled by them.

I just watched a video where a network engineer looked into how Google's malicious site detection worked and the main takeaway was that Google is everywhere. Lots of sites use Google services in the background, mainly it seems by using (linking to) Google-supplied fonts... 😱

The official Play Store has the people and resources to properly maintain and secure the Apps quickly while Aurora simply can't keep up with issues in a timely manner. Just something for consideration.

It Does not matter where something is loaded from people sign away privacy in many ways. Simply because it’s harder to track something does not mean it has stopped in any way. I believe doing what you talk about actually provides a shadow network of bad actors that cannot be tracked easily.
