4:13 "Good move man good move!!" "FUCK YES!!" Absolute legend to pull it off on the last lap! Race in Heaven Gil de Ferran. Your legacy will forever be remembered.
I was there... in the grandstand on Turn 4... Remember shouting at the top of my voice that "De Ferrans coming back at Brack" as they raced down the back stretch. Still gives me goose bumps now!
I was there watching the race, which had been shortened due to groundwater being sucked-up through the track, making the track treacherous. The crews worked super hard getting the track dry and the teams did qualifying, engine changes and then the shortened race all on the same day. That they still put on a great show after the tragedy of Alex Zanardi the week before, was a testament to their professionalism. The golden age of the Indycar CART Championship. On another note, I also had the pleasure of meeting Justin Wilson in person that day, as he was walking around the paddock (I paid extra for paddock access). He was super friendly, despite me being a complete stranger asking him stupid questions. The news of his death today, fills me with sadness.
I too was there, can remember the roadsweepers going round for hours trying to dry the track before the drivers called off the race as they had threatened
I thought that Rockingham Motor Speedwy (the one in England) died? "The venue hosted its last day of racing in November 2018 after being sold by its owners ..."
"The Rockingham 500 was an annual Championship Auto Racing Teams motor race held at the Rockingham Motor Speedway oval track in Corby, Northamptonshire, England, United Kingdom in 2001 and 2002. "
I was there in the stand at first corner; a young teen with my dad, attending my first proper motor race, and when Gil de Ferran crossed the line in first place he waved liked mad from his cockpit at the whole stand; the cameras didn't catch it in this vid, but the whole stand was going mad clapping and he acknowladged them, you could see his ecstasy, was a great moment!
Yes I remember this race well. Remember watching it live. I used to live in England then and I really regret not doing but only being 11 at the time it would of been pretty hard!
I was there, the car position pole was not working from lap 1,they shortened the race to bring the ascar/wankars on and we took 4 hours to get out of the parking field. The place was always doomed to failure.I only knew who was leading in the race was ecause I had my fm radio headphones.
@franticfury: The cars were re-named to Champ Cars before the whole series got the name, because the IRL claimed the naming right for the term "Indy Car".
go kenny go kenny brack...you were nearly take the Champ-Car title 2001...(we miss you very much, after the horrible crash in Texas 2003)from all of old fans and friends...the best driver from Sweden.
Once IndyCar gets more stable ground to stand on, I'd like to see its International appeal gain momentum again. At the rate F1 is going, some teams may be looking to jump ship...
What! The Silverstone circuit have been reconstructed a millions of time by now and I really miss the old super fast Silverstone but it was never a straight oval track.
Sadly it is now abandoned. It's due to be knocked down. ASCAR and CART ran the oval for the first years. Then national racing ran the road course such as BTCC, British F3 and Junior Formule, British Superbikes. It was most commonly used for Track Days for the public. You can see a few videos on this track in it's current state. Oval racing was never going to take off in Europe sadly.
CART consistently ran 230-240 MPH at Michigan and California(and Indy as well before the split) and drivers walked away from crashes regularly. You guys are seriously underestimating the safety level of modern IndyCars.
Because US people understand it and Europeans not they are safety whores or whatever, racing circuits in Europe & Middle east is mainly built by Herman Tilke the most boring shit you can ever think of , no I will watch the Laguna Seca Indycar Race this weekend much more thrilling than any Formula 1 race in the last 30 years.
@Ac Tion NASCAR is the boring form of racing what the hell are talking about? Have you ever seen the big ones at Talladega Super Speedway or the massive pileups at Daytona?
I remember them asking one of the drivers what they thought of the track Corners a bit short, back straight could do with being longer, pit Lane is a bit too narrow Other than that it’s not bad Or words to that effect!
It unfortunately won't happen. Alonso will say it's "too dangerous". And, would be an oval race with no bumps and battles, so it's better like it is today.

@@shaunprior2019 Rockingham sued Morrisons and eventually won their case in 2009 for constructing the track incorrectly.
That was a MAN move by Gil. One the best brazilian drivers ever, alongside Fittipaldi, Piquet and Senna...
May he rest in peace.
Totally agreed, he is on the top 4 of Brazilian race car drivers 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Agree!!!
A cart race in the uk!?!?! Why haven't I heard of this!!
You missed out it was a great race !!!
i know it wasnt CART but champ car went to brans hatch indy in 2003 belive it or not
Indycar REALLY needs to come back to Rockingham!

UK fans should stop supporting F1, support Indycar instead!
Those cars are gorgeous!
Rest in Peace Gil de Ferran, your victorys will be unforgettable.

CART needed this with what had happened in the states and the tragedy with Alex the week before. What a thriller.
I remember all too well..thank you!
I was there... such a shame :(
This was uploaded 15 years ago. Only 5 years after this race actually occurred
Yes I remember this race well. Remember watching it live. I used to live in England then and I really regret not doing but only being 11 at the time it would of been pretty hard!
I miss CART. They used to go to different countries. Rio in Brazil,
Motegi in Japan and Rockingham here in the UK
Montegi is wrecked due to natural causes and Rockingham closes this year. Sad really
Oval racing isn't just about the USA it started in Europe in the early 1900's the Monza oval is still there today.
CART was the best!
i'd call this the last truly great CART race
Fontana 2002
F1 certainly was. NASCAR or IRL I like them as they are today. But I really miss CART.
Back then CART, IRL and NASCAR all were way better than anything we have got now. F1 was lame back then already. I miss 80's or early 90's F1.
I was there. Believe me they gave it all 100% all the way. Insane average speeds.
Its been sold no more racing after 2018
I was there, the car position pole was not working from lap 1,they shortened the race to bring the ascar/wankars on and we took 4 hours to get out of the parking field. The place was always doomed to failure.I only knew who was leading in the race was ecause I had my fm radio headphones.
RIP Gil de Ferran
That last corner move for the win was special

great stuff, what a finish.
I agree. An IRL race at Rockingham would be fantastic!
CART. Balls to the walls racing.
RIP Gil

Would be great to see IRL at Rockingham. Facilities are great, whats to update?
And in true high speed oval racing the famous contact with the wall must had been a new experience.
What a move!
So you think that racing were more interesting 15 years ago and prior?
I remember this day me and my ex boss both paid a fortune for start finish seats and it was amazing
Would be amazing! Which one do you choose, Rockingham or Lausitz? Or a road course?
This race will always be overshadowed by Zanardi's accident the week before. Hope that CCWS or the IRL comes back to Rockingham.
Go Dan Wheldon.
Senna/Prost: the most intense rivalry in racing history. Sadly I didn't see it live because I'm 14.
Incrível Gil de Ferran
@Racecarwrecks I knew that, i just didn't think it likely that there happend to be an other oval in an other Rockingham, especially in England.
I miss Paul Page, he was world class.
I would love to see IRL race at Rockingham and Eurospeedway.
Strange to hear Parker Johnstone saying "Champ Car", where the series wasnt offically called Champ Car until 2003..
What ever happened to this track? Did anyone but CART ever run a race on the oval? What runs there now? BTCC and DTM on the roadcourse?

EX-CEL-LENT. That's real oval racing!
Rendez-nous le champcar!
Did he send it or did he didn't...don't send it? AHHHH SEND IT
Both and a bonus man, the old Monza (if ever reconststructed) high speed oval :)
hey, is cart now irl
This is Pikes Peak, not Rockingham
Good old days😢

I wish that Formula 1 will go oval racing in the future.
I thought this was North Carolina, not England.
That was in the 60s, though. Back when racing was only just starting to gain a real comprehension of what exactly was needed for crash safety.

Yes just watch it on youtube :)
The US GP in Texas was a mega succes! What do you say about that!
Wouldn't it be great to hold a NASCAR race in Europe?
@Ac Tion Why not high speed oval racing?
@Ac Tion But you must admit the high speeds in Indy & Nascar racing on the Talladega or Texas Superspeedway the big ones.

But I have in 1989-90, and good luck with your motor sport interest young man.

Back then I wanted Gil to win and win the championship. Now I wish Brack could have done it, this win and the championship.
Lewis should race in Indycar!!

Formula 1 needs rivalries, drivers who say what they think, less whiny drivers like Alonso and more lenient rules that allow more battles.
So whats your point?
It unfortunately won't happen. Alonso will say it's "too dangerous". And, would be an oval race with no bumps and battles, so it's better like it is today.
Sure, and I think Silverstone would fit well too.
Its not the British Rockingham, its the North Carolina Speedway. And the British version is a strange track
awesome finish! 9.3/10
And you are a NASCAR fan or what?
Good man!
I'm a die hard NASCAR fan.
REYNARD, HONDA, FIRESTONE. THE BEST.
Ever since cart and irl split it up, indy car just hasnt been the same
Cart was still great from 1996-2002
TREVTHEREV2006 what planet u on? its not a strange track! and this is the british rockingham notthe american one!!!
thats not a spelling error then, its just the wrong word. except it isnt
well franchitti won't be racing at either for a while anyway now that he has gone to the superior series :)
Silverstone's problem is that it's modified according to F1 needs.
And your statement sums up my fear, the formula one drivers today are chicks "only Tilke tracks please" wtf :(
USA still hasn't recovered fully from the crisis. That's why the public is decreasing.
F1 needs more challenging circuits, nowadays circuits sucks ass so widely and even NASCAR is ridden by decreasing public due to high price or WTF?
Netflix
Yeah. In Formula 1, a single contact can mean a Drive Through. That's why I stopped watching it. When it goes back to real racing maybe I'll return.
CART was great. IZOD sucks
F1 is brilliant... just not as good as CART was.
