Honestly Ben’s advice is the single best piece of job hunting advice I know. More broadly: know what the job is looking for and show them you are that. Read the stuff. Read their website. Just read and learn and understand what they want so you can show them how you are a good fit.
That part about weeding out the unlucky... why do I feel like that's happened for every job application I've sent off this year? (My last few jobs were for companies that either made massive cuts in manpower or went under themselves. So that struck a little close to home.)
